Orphaned non-free media (Image:CNN-globe-logo 400x121px.png)[edit]

Thanks for uploading Image:CNN-globe-logo 400x121px.png. The media description page currently specifies that it is non-free and may only be used on Wikipedia under a claim of fair use. However, it is currently orphaned, meaning that it is not used in any articles on Wikipedia. If the media was previously in an article, please go to the article and see why it was removed. You may add it back if you think that that will be useful. However, please note that media for which a replacement could be created are not acceptable for use on Wikipedia (see our policy for non-free media).

If you have uploaded other unlicensed media, please check whether they're used in any articles or not. You can find a list of 'image' pages you have edited by clicking on the "my contributions" link (it is located at the very top of any Wikipedia page when you are logged in), and then selecting "Image" from the dropdown box. Note that all non-free media not used in any articles will be deleted after seven days, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. Thank you. BetacommandBot 08:24, 18 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Historic locations, how to describe, policy?[edit]

Hi, thanks for stopping by: I've made several edits recently on historical event / people pages. Particularly with reference to Wales - people often say things like (paraphrasing)"Gruffudd_ap_Cynan landed in St.Davids in the South of Wales". Well at that times Wales didn't exist. So instead I've written it as just being "to the South" of Gwynedd and that it's in modern day Pembrokeshire, South Wales. I feel I should really qualify that though, they might rewrite the counties next year and the entry would then be wrong - there must be a general policy on this? So what is the right way to edit these things??

Maybe WP:PLACES will help. -- Mufka (u) (t) (c) 01:32, 7 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]
  • Hmm, Wikipedia:PLACES#Counties_of_Britain doesn't really help much. Nor does the talk - it seems to say use the current county names and that historic names can be mentinoed bracketed. That's fine, but we're going back to times where there wasn't really any central administration. Anyone else want to chip in?
That would seem to work to me - something like "Whats-his-face landed south of modern-day Footown, Barcounty, known then as Foobar" - if Foobar didn't exist even back then, just leave that bit out. If things change, we can update them, that's one of the good things about not having Wikipedia on paper. Hope this helps. Hersfold (t/a/c) 22:09, 7 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Your recent edits[edit]

Hi there. In case you didn't know, when you add content to talk pages and Wikipedia pages that have open discussion, you should sign your posts by typing four tildes ( ~~~~ ) at the end of your comment. If you can't type the tilde character, you should click on the signature button located above the edit window. This will automatically insert a signature with your name and the time you posted the comment. This information is useful because other editors will be able to tell who said what, and when. Thank you! --SineBot (talk) 13:52, 12 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Boxer rebellion translation[edit]

Hi there, the banner reads: "欽令 義和團糧臺", which translates literally as: "By Imperial Order -- The Righteous and Harmonious Society -- Office in charge of Grains."

I retained the "Boxer" and the "Commisariat" from the previous version, which translated the banner as "Boxer Commissariat". My translation was "By Imperial Order - Boxer Supply Commissariat".

My translation was a compromise between the older version, which was inaccurate though it conveyed the idea, with the literal and accurate translation. I retained "Boxer" because that's the common name for the group in English (and not "The Righteous and Harmonious Society"). The "Commissariat" is I guess as good as any as a translation for a rank with no exact or even determinable equivalent in English.

Please feel free to edit the translation as you see fit. --PalaceGuard008 (Talk) 03:20, 11 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Arilang1234 asking for help[edit]

Thanks for your message pbhj. (1)I am new on Wiki and I only have minimum knowledge of wiki (2)I am not a christian, and never heard of BMS or Taiyuan massacre until I did my research on internet. (3)please feel free to point out my short comings because I really like to become a good wiki man.Arilang1234 (talk) 20:21, 5 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Hi,its me again. If you have time, please go to Boxer have a look.I have done some changes, see you like it or not. I am not sure if I have put too much things onto the Boxer page or not.I am not a christian. My argument on Boxer is simply that the Manchu rulers were a bunch of savage slaves owner. They were different from the Kings or Queens of Europe. They were not even worth the name of king or queen.Nobody need to feel shameful about this war which happened 100 years ago, when the heroic soldiers and marines marched towards Peking to rescue innocent people. I am looking forward for your help.Arilang1234 (talk) 00:19, 6 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Please refrain from making unconstructive edits to Wikipedia, as you did to Sins of a Solar Empire. Your edits appear to constitute vandalism and have been reverted. If you would like to experiment, please use the sandbox. Thank you. SkyWalker (talk) 18:49, 17 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]

  • Hi Skywalker you mentioned that I vandalised a page (Sins of a Solar Empire) by asking for a fact and adding this to the talk page: "So is there a geniune [sic!] source for this with supporting evidence? I'll mark it up as a questionable fact. It sounds to me like the distributor, Stardock, maybe paid the production company, Ironclad Games, 1 million USD for the exclusive rights for the game? This isn't really the same thing as saying it cost 1 million USD to make. Anyone got info to add? Pbhj (talk) 18:14, 17 November 2008 (UTC)" - I don't understand, it's a reasonable question isn't it? I couldn't find a trustworthy source to corroborate the production costs. Pbhj (talk) 16:14, 4 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Welsh language[edit]

I'd entirely forgotten that discussion, 11 months old, until you returned my attention to it. The original poster had asked for help in learning Welsh. You responded with a criticism of the institutional status of the language, and referred to it as an anachronism. This was both counterproductive and fairly predictably annoying to other contributors.

However, I happen to know the answer to the question you now ask. Welsh is the most heavily subsidised minority language in the world. The condition of Gaelic in Scotland is nowhere near comparable - only the Western Isles council makes special use of it. Similarly Lallans in Scotland, Ullans and Irish in Northern Ireland, Irish in Eire, Breton in Brittany - France not being very supportive of minority languages generally - Sami in Norrbotten, and so on and so forth. All of these languages are used and have some official backing, but nothing even comparable to the Welsh Language Act.

You may wish to look at the modern use of Maori terms in New Zealand, though. I don't know the details, but that is at least a national government introducing a lot of indigenous-minority-language stuff nationwide. AlexTiefling (talk) 13:06, 24 June 2009 (UTC)[reply]

I usually compare/contrast the use to that of Breton within France. Thanks for the information. The Maori point is interesting as you appear to say the government is introducing borrowed words unnaturally? I can see this being an easy way of accurately describing native terms. Borrowed words are quite different to the Welsh situation however.
The original enquiry was from a Welsh Language teacher wanting to write an article "Welsh for Adult [Adult Learners]". I think it's an important part of later life learning of Welsh to note how strongly promoted it is to the point of "want to be proper Welsh, don't talk English [Language] then". The financial and educational cost is also obscured and would be illuminating information for such an article.
Thanks for your input.
On an separate point, should I have threaded the conversation here or responded on your talk page? Pbhj (talk) 11:07, 27 June 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Fair point - you were hardly wrong in your original comment - I just felt that the phrasing was not calculated to get good responses. I've no idea what the etiquette of threading these things is. Here suits me fine. I don't understand the NZ situation well enough to know all the ramifications - you might want to ask a New Zealander for all the details. AlexTiefling (talk) 12:59, 27 June 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Hot chocolate reference[edit]

I'm going to revert your removal of the reference. While the site is promotional in nature, the information sourced is not provided in a promotional way, and the source is being used to verify information, not to promote. Also, I don't see a regurgitation of wiki material. Many sources back up the information provided in the page. Please feel free to contact me if you disagree, Malinaccier (talk) 01:52, 19 August 2009 (UTC)[reply]

It's clearly derivative and appears at least in part to be a modification of some other wiki sources - the page is clearly part of a site that is simply a collection aimed at carrying advertising, a cursory inspection will verify that. It's barely informative, not a verifiable source and is no more notable than many others of its kind. IMO it's a rubbish link, but, whatever Pbhj (talk) 23:48, 22 August 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Notification: changes to "Mark my edits as minor by default" preference[edit]

Hello there. This is an automated message to tell you about the gradual phasing out of the preference entitled "Mark all edits minor by default", which you currently have (or very recently had) enabled.

On 13 March 2011, this preference was hidden from the user preferences screen as part of efforts to prevent its accidental misuse (consensus discussion). This had the effect of locking users in to their existing preference, which, in your case, was true. To complete the process, your preference will automatically be changed to false in the next few days. This does not require any intervention on your part and you will still be able to manually mark your edits as being 'minor'. The only thing that's changed is that you will no longer have them marked as minor by default.

For established users such as yourself there is a workaround available involving custom JavaScript. If you are familiar with the contents of WP:MINOR, and believe that it is still beneficial to the encyclopedia to have all your edits marked as such by default, then this discussion will give you the details you need to continue with this functionality indefinitely. If you have any problems, feel free to drop me a note.

Thank you for your understanding and happy editing :) Editing on behalf of User:Jarry1250, LivingBot (talk) 18:47, 14 March 2011 (UTC)[reply]

While all contributions to Wikipedia are appreciated, content or articles may be deleted for any of several reasons.

You may prevent the proposed deletion by removing the {{proposed deletion/dated}} notice, but please explain why in your edit summary or on the article's talk page.

Please consider improving the article to address the issues raised. Removing {{proposed deletion/dated}} will stop the proposed deletion process, but other deletion processes exist. It has the authority to enact binding solutions for disputes between editors, primarily related to serious behavioural issues that the community has been unable to resolve. This includes the ability to impose site bans, topic bans, editing restrictions, and other measures needed to maintain our editing environment. The arbitration policy describes the Committee's roles and responsibilities in greater detail. Asian 10,000 Challenge invite[edit]

Hi. The Wikipedia:WikiProject Asia/The 10,000 Challenge has recently started, based on the UK/Ireland Wikipedia:The 10,000 Challenge and Wikipedia:WikiProject Africa/The 10,000 Challenge. The idea is not to record every minor edit, but to create a momentum to motivate editors to produce good content improvements and creations and inspire people to work on more countries than they might otherwise work on. There's also the possibility of establishing smaller country or regional challenges for places like South East Asia, Japan/China or India etc, much like Wikipedia:The 1000 Challenge (Nordic). For this to really work we need diversity and exciting content and editors from a broad range of countries regularly contributing. At some stage we hope to run some contests to benefit Asian content, a destubathon perhaps, aimed at reducing the stub count would be a good place to start, based on the current Wikipedia:WikiProject Africa/The Africa Destubathon which has produced near 200 articles in just three days. If you would like to see this happening for Asia, and see potential in this attracting more interest and editors for the country/countries you work on please sign up and being contributing to the challenge! This is a way we can target every country of Asia, and steadily vastly improve the encyclopedia. We need numbers to make this work so consider signing up as a participant! Thank you. --Ser Amantio di NicolaoChe dicono a Signa?Lo dicono a Signa. 11:29, 20 October 2016 (UTC)[reply]
