Koala infection[edit]

As well as the human condition, Cryptococcosis is found in Koalas and believed to be contracted from their food plants. It is just as fatal. Koala contact with susceptible humans is thus inadvisable. 210.50.143.21 (talk) 05:52, 21 August 2009 (UTC) Ian Ison[reply]

Cryptococcosis in immunocompetant patients[edit]

I am not a biologist or doctor, but got interested in this topic because my friend died of cryptococcal meningitis. He did not have AIDS or any known reason his immune system would be compromised. The article is not clear on whether all forms of Cryptococcis are able to infect the immunocompetent patient---it implies in one place that only one form does, while stating a statistic of 250 known cases elsewhere without stating whether those cases involved only that one form.

I live on Vancouver Island BC and we have had an ongoing cryptococcal problem among immunocompetent patients for the last 10 plus years with at least 250 falling ill and 25 dying. This is apparently a more virulent gatti variant version of the fungus that has migrated from Australia to this area and is now spreading in coastal areas in BC, Washington, Oregon and N. California. My husband died in 1983 of septicemia, lupus,, kidney failure, congestive heart failure, but had also had cryptococcosis. He did not have AIDS, HIs immune system was compromised because of the lupus. The autopsy showed the cryptococcosis was cured. He had been given amphotericin (an awful drug ) noted in the article. There were pigeons residing in the barn behind our home. One day when he was quite ill, a group of "pigeon hunters" showed up and for rid of the flock. Survival rate seems off, should recheck the rest[edit]

I just added a ref I happened across for case-fatality rate in HIV patients, which said it was 9% for high-income regions over three months. An IP in these edits had added an unsourced figure of 30% with "optimal treatment" over 10 weeks. Because it's an IP putting in data without sources with some reason to doubt accuracy, it would be best to go over the rest of it to see if there are errors.
