Indie status[edit]

Is Rough Trade an indie label? It's listed on Sony/BMG's list of labels.

According to [1] and [2], the German branch of Rough Trade was bought by Zomba Music Group in 1996, who were later bought by Sony/BMG. But it seems that Rough Trade (UK) has remained independent (though I think they were owned by One Little Indian for a few years). --Vclaw 00:28, 31 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]

FormerIP, could you please refocus from adding list of bands (we have a list of rough trade artists already) and if you have to edit focus on the significance, trials and tribulations, achievements, character and blood of the label. There is a lot to be said beside this band that band bla. I assume you say the doc on the arts channel last night, and I'm tempted to revert you summarising of scraps from google. Agree with Wwwhatsup. FormerIP you'll never get to me with petulance, only with the quality of your edits, and I'll admit here and now that as you are warming and getting more familar with the article, are doing 'not bad at all'. Chronology[edit]

Having successfully promoted and sold records by punk, very early indie pop and early post-punk bands such as The Smiths and Desperate Bicycles, Travis began to manage acts and distribute bands such as Scritti Politti and began the label, Hmm, isn't this a little out of order? agreed. the smiths didn't rock up at rough trade with HiG until fully six years after the bicycles made their debut. if that's the best we can do for an opening paragraph about one of the most famous indie record labels of all time, then we should fucking top ourselves out of shame. thank fuck there's books like "how soon is now?" to get the real story from. imagine if you hadn't been around at the time, & all you had to go on was this article- you'd be forgiven for thinking that the smiths had been around since seeing the sex pistols (along with 18,000 other people) at the lesser free trade hall, when in fact they went with RT to snub factory.
