Meritage can be used to describe wine made all over the world.

Not so. The Meritage Association will not license the name to non-American wineries. I know, we tried to so so a couple of years ago for a South African winery,

Perhaps they have changed their rules, as The Meritage Association's member list currently shows one licensee of the trademark from Australia, three from Canada, and one from Israel. (I recently had a Canadian Meritage) Walter Moar 02:42, 16 May 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Confirmed by writers from Wine Spectator magazine and a source at Rubicon Estate (Napa). Meritage Assoc. has broadened their licensing criteria in an effort to expand membership beyond the U.S. Heavypen (talk) 20:10, 13 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Why the name is even needed[edit]

One thing that is not made clear by the article is why a name for Bordeaux-style wines is even needed, much less what is meant by a Bordeaux-style wine.

I don't have sources for this so I'm not going to put it in, but my understanding is that in order to name a wine a Merlot, a Cabernet Sauvignon or some other grape name, then at least 75% of the grapes in the wine must be of that kind. So the problem is what to call wine blends (we need that article) that don't have 75% or more of any one kind of grape. That's where Meritage comes in, at least for those wines that are blends of only the five classic Bordeaux grapes: Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Petit Verdot and Malbec. It should be noted that if a wine blend has some non-Bordeaux grape in it, like Pinot Noir or Zinfandel, it is not a Meritage. --Born2cycle (talk) 03:25, 14 October 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Not "Summation"[edit]

I have removed the implication that "Summation" is synonymous with Meritage. It was inserted by an unregistered user on 10 August 2013 citing no supporting sources. I can find no mention of "Summation" on the Meritage Alliance site. "Summation" seems to be a rival brand for a somewhat different blend.
