    April 24[edit]

My Wiki page was deleted without reason[edit]

My Wiki page was on a fictional character. just as real as if someone did a page on a video game character. I sited where I got the information from and gave credit to the creator of the subject. Also the message I got was unclear with what was wrong with my Wiki page. -Bojankles

P.S. the wiki page was a draft that I tried to publish but it was denyed. If you want to see the draft than please go here: https://docs.google.com/document/d/1agnnB7CKfTJbcbMIZuO1joC_c7LtTlpnaPbv19YYxP4/edit

BOJANKLES, you seem to have a misunderstanding about the purpose of Wikipedia. This is an encyclopedia consisting of articles about topics that reliable, independent sources have written about. We simply summarize those reliable sources. As for fictional characters, we have an article about Prince Hamlet because reliable sources independent of Shakespeare have been writing about the character for over 400 years. Similarly, Mickey Mouse has been a sensation for 95 years and reliable sources continue to write about him today. We do not host articles about newly created characters that have not yet been discussed extensively by reliable soures. Cullen328 (talk) 08:34, 24 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Image background not being displayed as transparent[edit]

The background of File:Cambrian Credit Union logo.webp appears to be transparent on the file page, but it is not being displayed as such at Cambrian Credit Union. Does anyone know why that would be? Graham (talk) 03:15, 24 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]

@Graham11: phab:T283646 says WebP images can lose transparency when they are resized. PrimeHunter (talk) 10:09, 24 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@PrimeHunter: Do you know what the best way of handling the issue in the meantime is? Is there an easy way to convert the file to another format, for instance? Graham (talk) 03:01, 25 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@Graham11: phab:T283646 says some display sizes may work but the only working size I have found is the original 630px, too much for an infobox. The only stable fix I know is to upload a new file in another format but I don't know a good conversion program. It may work to reupload the WebP file in the exact size displayed by the infobox but that size can vary between users so it's a poor solution. PrimeHunter (talk) 14:38, 25 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Is the article Accesswire even remotely near meeting WP:GNG though? Doesn't look like it.--♦IanMacM♦ (talk to me) 20:18, 24 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]
    Hello, Jhammers.
I'm afraid that the article Accesswire is nothing like a Wikipedia article, and I am dubious that it can be made into one. As 331dot says, you should not edit it, but instead should make edit requests. But in my view, the only thing worth doing to that article is to find some reliable sources where people who are wholly unconnected with Accesswire or Issuer Direct have chosen to write at some length about Accesswire.
The thing to understand is that Wikipedia has little interest in what the subject of an article says or wants to say about themselves, or what their associates say about them. Wikipedia is almost entirely interested in what people who have no connection with the subject, and who have not been prompted or fed information on behalf of the subject, have chosen to publish about the subject in reliable sources. If enough material is cited from independent sources to establish notability, a limited amount of uncontroversial factual information may be added from non-independent sources. Since all of the current sources cited are closely connected with Accesswire, the article does not at present appear to represent any independent evaluation of the company. Frankly, I am baffled as to why an editor as experienced as Rehman should have created such a feeble article at all. ColinFine (talk) 21:16, 24 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Editing a page made by an institution to give a good image of themselves[edit]

Hi! I just started recently as a Wikipedia editor. My initial goal was just to help fix small grammar errors, but I have stumbled into a very particular article of an educational institution.

This article talks about elements of the university and its history without indicating any source for it. On the other hand, Im not sure if an statement such as "the university was formed after the dissolution of this two universities" requires a citation or not.

Moreover, the article uses very subjective words to describe the quality, instalations, etc. of the institution. In my humble opinion its clearly a promotional article. What is the procedure for this? Should I add the template of "Source required" after each of those type of sentences?

    Thanks for the help. FranGallego33 (talk) 22:49, 24 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]

FranGallego33 it would be easier to advise if you linked the article. If the whole article is promotional and unsourced, you could use tags like Template:Promotional tone and Template:More citations needed. If only a few lines are problematic, you could use inline equivalents. TSventon (talk) 23:08, 24 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]
thanks for your reply! Yes, the page is already flagged as promotional tone so I guess there isn't much else to do. FranGallego33 (talk) 00:16, 25 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]

    Questions about CSS[edit]

Hi, The page Wikipedia:Community portal/styles.css is displayed as code but when I create a new page named Wikipedia: ..../styles.css it is not displayed as code. Pereoptic Talk✉️   07:31, 25 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Because only css pages in the template namespace get the right annotation for that. You can either create in template space and move to Wikipedia, OR ask someone to use Special:ChangeContentModel to modify the page to have the right annotation. —TheDJ (talkcontribs) 09:43, 25 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@Pereoptic: Administrators have a link to change content model at https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Draft:Communityl/styles.css&action=info#mw-pageinfo-content-model. Template editors can also do it at the English Wikipedia. I guess your real interest is the Persian Wikipedia where you are currently a template editor and created a styles.css page today. Template editors don't have the required editcontentmodel right there when I compare Special:ListGroupRights#templateeditor and fa:Special:ListGroupRights#templateeditor. PrimeHunter (talk) 11:22, 25 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@PrimeHunter: Yes, you guessed right! I saw an example of editcontentmodel in English Wikipedia, but I could not find it in Persian Wikipedia. Thank you very much for your complete explanation. best Pereoptic Talk✉️   15:13, 25 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]

What is ../wiki/.. as in Wikipedia URLs?[edit]

I am trying to understand more about Wikipedia's use of URLs. I can not understand the purpose of the /wiki/ part in a URL such as en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Onion. Why not just have en.wikipedia.org/Onion. Any help on this would be very much appreciated.Gourdiehill (talk) 12:05, 25 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]

@Gourdiehill: It identifies the live wiki pages at a website with other types of pages. wikipedia.org is only used for wikis but we still have many other pages like https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Onion&action=history and https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Onion&diff=prev&oldid=1216909020. One of the advantages is that our robots.txt at https://en.wikipedia.org/robots.txt can use the line Disallow: /w/ to tell search engines and other web crawlers to not visit those pages. The pages also have noindex to prevent indexing but a webcrawler would have to waste its own and our resources to discover noindex in the html. PrimeHunter (talk) 12:52, 25 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@PrimeHunter I understand some of your answer but not fully. Also there are a number of separate but related issues. It is a bit confusing that en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Onion and en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Onion both return the same web page. Wouldn't it be best if the page was accessed by en.wikipedia.org/Onion? I feel the URLs should be meaningful to users but if too much functionality gets attached to them they start to become meaningless (speaking for myself anyway). Gourdiehill (talk) 15:11, 25 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@Gourdiehill: It's practical for some applications that there are other ways to see pages and associated information. /w/index.php has a lot of parameters to see different things. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Onion is the canonical ("official") URL for the wiki page. The html for https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Onion says <link rel="canonical" href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Onion">. See canonical link element for the feature. Some wikis do have url's similar to en.wikipedia.org/Onion. It's easier to type and may look prettier to readers but as mentioned, it has advantages to have a clear distinction between wiki pages and other pages at the same website. MediaWiki controls it with mw:Manual:$wgArticlePath. It's set to '/wiki/$1' in all Wikimedia wikis with code in https://noc.wikimedia.org/conf/highlight.php?file=InitialiseSettings.php and https://noc.wikimedia.org/conf/highlight.php?file=CommonSettings.php. You are very unlikely to get this changed. If you didn't understand my webcrawler argument then let me elaborate a little. Google and many other websites have automated programs visiting millions (probably billions in total) of Wikipedia pages, typically so they can be included in search results for their users. Disallow: /w/ is a convenient way to tell them "Don't waste resources visiting page histories, diffs and other non-wiki pages". If they did then it would cost both them and us significant money, and they wouldn't visit as many pages we do want them to visit. PrimeHunter (talk) 15:58, 25 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@PrimeHunter:Thanks very much for that interesting explanation. I did not know about Canonical link element so have read about that. I became interested in this because I wanted to make use of Wiktionary as an API for a website I am making. I am not finding it very easy as I am running into CORS issues when I make requests. I am rather out of my depth and I have seen there are some issues with MediaWiki APIs but I thought it ought to be possible to make an Ajax request from my site to retrieve the English Wiktionary page for translations of a particular word. I am finding the API documentation very difficult! Gourdiehill (talk) 16:32, 25 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]

    Paula Vennels in search[edit]

    Hi

I was looking for the Paula Vennells article earlier and as I typed here name incrementally into the search box, nothing seemed to match. I did eventually find the article and when I paste the full name into the search box, it did find it. Is this normal behaviour? Fob.schools (talk) 13:40, 25 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]

@Fob.schools: I got the same result. It's not normal unless the page was created in the last day and hasn't been indexed yet by the autocompletion feature, but the page is from 2019. I have moved it without leaving a redirect and then moved it back to register a new creation of the page name for indexing. It still gives the same result but that's expected right now. It will hopefully be indexed correctly within a day. PrimeHunter (talk) 14:21, 25 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]

    Replacing image from a page[edit]

Judge Russell asked me to help him replace the photo currently on his page with his formal headshot. John D. Russell (judge)

I created a wiki account and uploaded an image and tagged his page, but I don't know how to completely replace the current image and use the new one: File:JRussell.jpg

    -- GableGotwalsLaw (talk) 14:33, 25 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]

@GableGotwalsLaw, did you take that photograph? That is what "own work" means. 57.140.16.48 (talk) 15:06, 25 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]
If you have a personal relationship with Judge Russell, you should also review WP:COI to see whether it applies to you, and follow the instructions there. 57.140.16.48 (talk) 15:07, 25 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]
I hired the photographer that took the photo and have rights to the image. He used to work at GableGotwals before he was appointed as a judge and he asked me to help him get the existing photo on his wiki page replaced with his formal headshot I tried to upload. GableGotwalsLaw (talk) 15:10, 25 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@GableGotwalsLaw, if your username represents a company rather than an individual, I recommend requesting a change of username - WP:CHU has instructions - lest your account be blocked on that basis. A username needs to represent you as an individual. "[Name] at GableGotwalsLaw" would be acceptable, for instance (no need to use your real name).
Photographers typically retain the rights to photos they are hired to take unless it is a formal work for hire. I don't know whether this applies in your case.
Someone may come along and add the image for you if they like; if they don't, I would recommend making a formal edit request on the talk page, Talk:John D. Russell (judge), since you seem to have a COI here. 57.140.16.48 (talk) 16:08, 25 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]

How to set the extent of the lead section? (Infobox shows up too soon on mobile view)[edit]

In the mobile view for Fermat number (with a narrow enough screen width so as to make the infobox inline), the infobox appears before the lead section actually ends. "A Fermat number [..] is a positive integer of the form {INFOBOX} ". I figure this is because there's a line break between "form" and the formula. Is there a way to adjust this, such that the lead section is explicitly defined? Coolreader18 (talk) 15:15, 25 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Monospace template not working on one page only?[edit]

I was reading Canonical link element and I saw a paragraph (Imgur link) where the example URLs aren't being rendered in monospace font as they should; inspecting the element confirms that those two spans of text are supposed to be monospace. I copied the code over to my sandbox and it rendered as it should have. Is this a problem only on my end? I've tried refreshing the article page, purging it, and clearing my cache to see if that would fix it, but no dice. —Tenryuu 🐲 ( 💬 • 📝 ) 16:19, 25 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Fixed for me by removing {{mono}} from inside a link earlier in the page.[1] I don't know exactly why if failed but the template uses Wikipedia:TemplateStyles which has complicated rules. PrimeHunter (talk) 16:47, 25 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]

    Where should I discuss a redirect?[edit]

We have a whole page entitled "Redirects for Discussion". However, I can't tell if that's merely a euphemism for "Redirects for possible Deletion." I do know that many redirects listed end up neither deleted nor merely retained, but transformed in some way.

I disagree with Natg 19 on whether to convert a redirect to...something intermediate between a disambig page and a stub. If my revision had stuck and the page were no longer a redirect, I would attempt to start a discussion at the corresponding talk page. But my revision was reverted, and the page is a redirect right now.

Consequently non-technically-minded editors might struggle to find the talk page. Should I initiate discussion there anyways or take it to RfD?

    Thanks, Bernanke's Crossbow (talk) 17:33, 25 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Bernanke's Crossbow, why not start a discussion at Talk:Mercury-vapor lamp. I am not convinced by your version, as disambig pages should help with navigation and stubs should be notable, and I don't think the new page does either. TSventon (talk) 18:15, 25 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Article not showing on Visual Editor linking[edit]

Hi! I have been trying to create a draft for a corresponding article in the Italian Wikipedia that is Operation Strade sicure, so I created Draft: Operation Strade sicure but I am having trouble trying to link words to the Autostrada A3 which I have tried to search for but it kept directing me to List of A3 roads with the article not showing up. draft afc submission in my userpage[edit]

for fun and as a joke, i decided to copy the "draft afc submission" box from a draft lying around, and put it in my userpage with the heading "submit to me"

i would like to know out of curiosity, what would happen if i, or someone else, submits the "draft (that is my userpage)" for review?

i apologize if this is not the right place for me to ask things. i've had a look at the "am i in the right place" page; another place i could be in is the village pump for technical stuff but what i'm asking probably isn't a bug, so i'm here. — ppr22📄 18:41, 25 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]

It would be added to Category:Pending AfC submissions, but I wouldn't recommend wasting AfC volunteer time. I have added demo=y to take it out of Category:Draft AfC submissions, which possibly means it would be ignored. TSventon (talk) 19:00, 25 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]
right, the purpose is for it to just look ridiculous, like
a draft afc submission box... in a user page??? it's silly, right? :P
although if it were to be approved (which will never be, i know that, but my curiosity overtakes me), would my user page become an actual article or what would happen? — ppr22📄 10:32, 26 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]
If an editor writes an article on their user page and submits it through AfC, it will generally be moved to draft space before it is reviewed. Then if it is accepted it is moved to article space. So if User:Paper2222 was an article (which it isn't) and was submitted it could be moved to Draft:Paper2222 as a draft and then Paper2222 as an article. TSventon (talk) 11:13, 26 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]
so, my userpage would become an article
    that's spooky haha. thanks for the answer! — ppr22📄 11:24, 26 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Paper2222, it's clear that you have put a lot of effort into your user page and your signature. As this is, after all, an encyclopedia, how about putting effort into improving articles? -- Hoary (talk) 21:44, 25 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]
if this is just you yelling at me to put my effort in other, better places (i can't tell; autism)... i'm sorry. i would rather do (often useless) things that make me happy.
most of the work i've done are fixing obvious typos and other edits that are 90% of the time minor edits. the most i've probably ever done is add a citation to a [needs citation] message on a topic i know very well.
also, you can't exactly tell me how i waste my online time.
if this is an actual suggestion, then i would love to. i love the community and hustleness this place gives, and the amount of wikipedia trivia i've found out are endless. i hate thinking about how the majority of edits i've done is my user page. i would love to do more work in improving (and possibly even making) articles. i've just a few problems:
    1. i'm too unconfident in making brave edits or new articles, since i'm afraid of getting ridiculed for it.
    i know how to write articles (i think), and i know how to add citations pretty well, but my unconfidence just gets to me ;w;

I realised a not insignificant problem: in this encyclopaedia there is the wikilink "provolone" on many words "provola", but these are two different cheeses, although similar: https://it.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Provolone; https://it.wikipedia.org/wiki/Provola. [Edit Conflict] So delink them. Likely this English language Wikipedia does need (or at least would benefit from) more Italians, but that would require more English-competent Italians to voluntarily become active editors here – how can that be achieved?
Of course, exactly the same surely applies to all other non-Anglophone cultures. And I'm sure that Anglosphere topics covered in the Italian and other non-English Wikipedias also have some similar problems. {The poster formerly known as 87.81.230.195} 188.220.144.58 (talk) 21:21, 25 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Dear IP, it's not easy to do it on all pages, alone I can't do it. JacktheBrown (talk) 21:23, 25 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]
JacktheBrown, you have several times pointed out that coverage in en:Wikipedia of Italian matters is poor. This poverty is regrettable but not at all surprising. If you want to remind people of it and perhaps also appeal for help, why not do so at WT:WikiProject Italy or WT:WikiProject Food and drink? -- Hoary (talk) 21:54, 25 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@Hoary: no, the Italian topics are treated sufficiently well here, but they could certainly be improved (for example the "Italy" article, the "Kingdom of Italy" article and the "Sicily" article are better in en.wiki). JacktheBrown (talk) 21:58, 25 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]
JacktheBrown, so what's your purpose in bringing up here (Help Desk) successive examples of what could certainly be improved? -- Hoary (talk) 22:41, 25 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]
JacktheBrown, you say "it's not easy to do it on all pages, alone I can't do it".
Using the search box option "Search for pages containing provola" reveals that there are (only) 16 articles that contain the word 'provola', and one of them concerns butterflies. Checking, and correcting where necessary, 15 articles does not seem to me to be a monumental task for one who is concerned about the matter, and almost certainly you are the only one in this discussion who has the necessary knowledge to do it.
There are rarely sweeping overall solutions to deficiencies in Wikipedia's huge store of data: the only way to correct them is the same way that Wikipedia was created in the first place, with each individual contributing or doing what they can. Can i add Social Media platform names etymology in Wikipedia page- List of company name etymologies?[edit]

That Wikipedia page is about company name etymology, is it ok to add Social platform name etymologies in this page because YouTube, WhatsApp, Line work as companies? Octo2k (talk) 13:45, 26 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]

I would think so - provided you cite reliable sources for the etymology. Beware of random people making things up, or speculating about things nobody knows. (Yes, I know there's plenty of entries there without citations. There shouldn't be. I've tagged it as needing more). ColinFine (talk) 14:52, 26 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Actually, now I've looked at it, I cannot understand why that article should exist, and I have opened a discussion on the artcile's talk page. ColinFine (talk) 15:14, 26 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]
I think that article should exist because etymology is an important thing to know about a particular thing, in that Wikipedia page people can find companies name etymology just by using find in page feature through web browser. Octo2k (talk) 15:39, 26 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@Octo2k, there's a difference between importance and notability - you may want to read this page, specifically the bits down here. 57.140.16.48 (talk) 15:54, 26 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Octo2k, the trouble is that that list is full of surmise and guess. It might be right in many cases, but without a citation to check, it is worthless - and I think it's likely that in many cases no authoritative statement will be found.
In cases where it is interesting - and documented - it should be in the article about the company: there is no value in collecting this list: see WP:INDISCRIMINATE.
I have therefore nominated it for deletion, at WP:Articles for deletion/List of company name etymologies. This opens a discussion which anybody may contribute to, and it is possible that people will come up with reasons to keep it according to Wikipedia's policies. You are as welcome as anybody else to contribute to that discussion - but I suggest you read WP:Arguments to avoid in deletion discussions, especially USEFUL, first. I don't really know why you'd think that this is a "country whitewash". The WP:BURDEN is on article creators to sufficiently show that something meets our notability guidelines. Crazyseiko, an editor does not need to be British to instantly see that the article was entirely unreferenced and therefore completely inappropriate for this encyclopedia without dramatic improvement. Wikipedia is the encyclopedia that anyone can edit, as long as their edits comply with policies and guidelines. That article did not comply. We have no policy and no guideline that says only British people can edit British topics or only Vietnamese people can edit Vietnamese topics or only Egyptian people can edit Egyptian topics. I happen to be American, and if you happen to make any policy compliant edits to any article about an American topic, I will be very happy to see it. Protecting ILLs that need to remain ILLs[edit]

Short of translating the foreign-language article, is there a template or something for this? I just saw a bot edit an article to say that a football player was the ruler of Algiers in 1724. Because there can only ever be one Ali Abdi, right? That particular instance has been dealt with now, but I had previously noted that the Amour Mountains are a geological feature on en-wiki but a tribal community that produces rugs on fr-wiki, and that linking to the French article was getting tagged as a CS1 error. Just wondering if there is some preventative template like nowrap. Elinruby (talk) 03:51, 27 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Elinruby, I have been editing Wikipedia for almost 15 years and I had no idea what the acronym "ILL" meant until I wracked my brain and now assume that you probably mean "interlanguage links". Does the French Wikipedia really say that a mountain range weaves rugs? Since you speak French, I believe, I hope that you corrected that. As for Ali Abdi, that is a disambiguation page, but none of the entries correspond to an 18th century Algerian leader. So, to be frank, I am confused by your post, and am hoping that you can perhaps simplify for simple people like me. Cullen328 (talk) 06:02, 27 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@Cullen328: sorry sir. It comes up a lot in the topics I edit and I assumed. So now that we have cleared that up:
    1. The mountain range is both articles, but the English article fails to mention that people some Arabic tribal people live there and weave rugs. Compare Amour Range and fr: Djebel Amour. The latter is in French of course, but note the image of the rug, which has a file description in English. This is not fixable by me, because I cannot confidently put a sentence together about the Amour people, other than to say that they make rugs. Which is what I wanted to say at Regency of Algiers. I think I have sufficiently tweaked the wording to avoid this particular problem there. but I had to use passive voice.
    2. Ali Abdi was indeed Dey of Algiers in 1725, I assure you. per multiple sources. It turns out that "Ali Abdi" is also a dab page at fr-wiki, and his article there is fr:Baba Abdi, so there was an error in the article to begin with -- names of individuals are very variable in the topic area -- but here is my question:

is there a template that could be used to prevent stuff like this.

As in, yes there is an English-language article with this title, and no, we should not link to it That is what I meant with the analogy to nowrap. As for the link to the correct French article, I am yes about to go fix that again, but I had to track it down. There are several naming and linking problems on the talk page, you may notice. One thing at a time though. Is there such a template? Elinruby (talk) 06:39, 27 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Elinruby, the older I get, the more I realize how much I do not know. When I search online for "Amour rugs", I find one specific commercial rug marketing company using that term, but not others and nothing more in Google Books, for example. I may well be missing something. Is the term possibly rendered differently in English among rug experts? The search results are flooded with the common French word "amour", of course, and also Old West works by Louis L'Amour, who apparently discussed rugs several times in his 89 novels. As for the bot problem, I see that you are already discussing the issue at User talk:Kanashimi, who operates the bot. I still lack a clear understanding of what function the template you are looking for would actually carry out, so maybe another editor may have some ideas for you. Sorry that I cannot be of greater assistance. Cullen328 (talk) 07:16, 27 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]
I think all the sources on the rugs are in Arabic, Cullen. Or possibly Berber. That's why I can't just translate my way out of this. But maybe if I ask the question without specifics, because the bot per se is not the problem:
The problem arises when the English article with the same title is not about the same thing or is less complete.
People really really want to link to the English article without considering whether it is correct or complete. Not linking to it is considered an error that gets "fixed". If you don't know of such a template, ok. Thanks for listening. I was just trying to find a more elegant solution that isn't ad hoc.Elinruby (talk) 07:37, 27 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Have you tried contacting kanashimi the operator of Cewbot that made the erroneous edit? [add]Sorry, I missed the mention above that there is discussion at User talk:Kanashimi#Sometimes there is a reason for the ILL link. Regarding the rugs, that doesn't seem to be an issue with {{ill}} usage at all, just different amounts of information in the different language wikis. Nothing to be done there other than to translate/import the useful information. olderwiser 11:46, 27 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@Elinruby: It was yourself who made the Ali Abdi error by changing an unlinked Ali Abdi to {{ILL|Ali Abdi|fr}}.[3] Your code claims it's the person in fr:Ali Abdi and that's Ali Abdi (footballer) so the bot had good reason to link our own article about that Ali Abdi. I haven't examined your other case. PrimeHunter (talk) 11:53, 27 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]

(ec) Hi PrimeHunter, nice to meet you too. It is always nice when someone comes along to run wikiblame. I know I have already said somewhere that it could have been me so.. can we deal with the actual question? You're sounding like you need a break from the help desk. I say this as someone who burned out on tech support myself a while back. Now. The Ali Abdi link is fixed. I said in at least one of the other three or four times I have explained this tonight that I might well have been the person who linked to Ali Abdi instead of Baba Ali or... I think the other name of this person is Kur Ali. There is a long list of other such naming problems on the article talk page. but the Ali Abdi in question is not currently a football player in Tunisia since he was putting down a mutiny in Algiers in the early 18th century. I hope you don't talk to newbies like that, PrimeHunter.

@Bkonrad: thanks for the courteous suggestion. That is the traditional solution to this, yes. I was looking for something else because I do not trust the French article and if I translate it I have to vouch for it. And I don't speak Arabic. So ad hoc solutions it is, then. I guess. And ya, kanashimi and I have spoken and that may lead somewhere, but the bot is merely the symptom of the problem, which is the underlying assumption that the English article is correct and complete. There are many bots, sigh. Thank you all for your input, but apparently the answer is no, there is no software solution to this. Go ahead and close the post; I will go another route on this.— Preceding unsigned comment added by Elinruby (talkcontribs) 12:38, 27 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]

You didn't say here that it could have been you but I now see you said it at User talk:Kanashimi#Sometimes there is a reason for the ILL link. I'm not sure what you mean by "the actual question". If you mean whether there is a way to tell bots to not link the subject an {{ILL}} link like {{ILL|Ali Abdi|fr}} says it's about then I don't think it's possible or should be possible. The whole purpose of using the template is to link an English article if it exists. And it's not realistic to get a bot to analyze fr:Ali Abdi and guess from the context that somebody tried to link the wrong person. You can maybe avoid bots by not using the template at all. Help:Interlanguage links#Inline links (links in the text of the article) gives several variations with links like fr:Ali Abdi (note the colon in front of the wikitext [[:fr:Ali Abdi]]). However, it would link the footballer, just in the French Wikipedia, and Help:Interlanguage links#Inline links (links in the text of the article) says "The best practice is to use the template". If you want to use {{ILL}} to link fr:Baba Abdi but display "Ali Abdi" without linking an English article until one is created about the right person then you have to suggest a name for a future article, and that name will be linked. Using the disambiguator in Haji Ali (Dey of Algiers): {{ILL|Ali Abdi (Dey of Algiers)|lt=Ali Abdi|fr|Baba Abdi}} produces Ali Abdi [fr]. There is no guarantee that a future article will actually get that name or be linked if it's created by somebody who didn't see your link. I haven't examined whether the common name in English sources is Ali Abdi, Baba Abdi or something else, and an "Ali Abdi" title might use another disambiguator or a longer name like Ali Abdi Pasha. Special:WhatLinksHere/Baba Abdi shows three links (I think at least one of them by you) so maybe the simple {{ILL|Baba Abdi|fr}} to produce Baba Abdi [fr] is OK. PrimeHunter (talk) 14:03, 27 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]

I don't think I would be quick to take offense about the suggestion to take a break from the help desk. I am grateful there are people willing to perform such tasks, and if they do something less than perfectly that's okay. By the same token, there are going to be times when somebody may believe you haven't provided the perfect answer, and as long as they're not truly uncivil about it, that should be okay too, whether or not it's factually justified. Hello,

I was wondering, can a graphic designer be eligible for a article who had win a award plaque on here cause LuckyDesigns, who had won a Official Charts award cause he recently won a UK R&B Singles and Albums Charts Number 1 award section for his work on Do Not Disturb by Nemzzz. Or is there more to be needed for it?. 2601:201:8000:5BB0:512E:ABE4:CC65:AC71 (talk) 06:18, 27 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Hello. That depends entirely on whether or not multiple reliable, independent published sources devoted significant coverage to this graphic designer. Please read and study Your first article. We certainly have some articles about people who contribute to musical album photography and graphic design, but multiple independent reliable sources devoting independent coverage are required. I personally worked on one such article, Ethan Russell. Please note, that article has 14 references. Cullen328 (talk) 07:34, 27 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]

    Help with 64.189.18.35[edit]

Hello, 64.189.18.35 is making a huge number of edits all of a sudden. A good number of them seem above board and helpful (which is why I am coming here and not ANI, AIV, or SPI). The user is eliminating a large of red links, so I left a message about the red links guidelines. The user has deleted content from North African campaign, twice claiming no source. See here 1. However there is material that is clearly sourced to books. I am worried that the user might not understand when books are being sourced. Rather than attempting to help improve articles, the user prefers to remove content. Which is kind of fine, but sometimes unconstructive.

I also worry about a sock, but can not point to anything definitive yet. Asking for help reviewing their contributions and kindly asking the user to be a little more constructive if you think it is warranted. Classicwiki (talk) If you reply here, please ping me. 07:40, 27 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for the message, @Classicwiki. Taking out sources completely and not improving on them is really bad. In that case, I will ask the user to be more constructive about editing sources of reference and not go about deleting them completely without providing a solution. Much appreciated! @Kambai Akau - Thanks! I did end up reporting to AIV, but have mixed feelings about it. Classicwiki (talk) If you reply here, please ping me. 07:59, 27 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@Classicwiki, hopefully something would be done on the editor's approach if not now, subsequently. Warm regards. Kambai Akau (talk) 08:03, 27 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@Kambai Akau - AIV admin is recommending ANI, but I do not have the energy to keep following this. So I am going to hope others help out if there are still problems. Classicwiki (talk) If you reply here, please ping me. 08:08, 27 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Lol. Cool decision. It could be quite a lengthy conversation requiring a great deal of time investment. Kambai Akau (talk) 09:19, 27 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]

    Transcluded section[edit]

How do you fix cite error duplicate reference names when you have a section transcluded from another article, as seen here in 2014 FIFA World Cup qualification. I'm flummoxed. Thanks. Isaidnoway (talk) 09:51, 27 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]

@Isaidnoway: A reference with the same name is transcluded from multiple articles. That's tricky. I used Special:ExpandTemplates on the whole 2014 FIFA World Cup qualification to search for "soccer365". I found one definition with slightly different text and changed it.[4] It easily breaks again if anyone changes anything in one of the many definitions. A more stable fix would be to only define the reference in a template and then transclude the template in all the articles. PrimeHunter (talk) 10:08, 27 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]
PrimeHunter, thank you for your assistance. I'm curious, would have changing the ref name in the other article also fixed the duplicate reference name issue? Isaidnoway (talk) 15:42, 27 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@Isaidnoway: Yes, but the article would get two separate references with identical content (except for a non-displayed extra space). We prefer to avoid that. PrimeHunter (talk) 19:24, 27 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]

    Server issue[edit]

Often while I am editing I get a notification when I switch between visual and source editing as "The server did not respond within the expected time.". And my edits are getting erased while switching. Pagers (talk) 09:54, 27 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Hello, Pagers. Unless other people are reporting this as well, it is likely to be your device or your network with the problem. If others have reported it, you'll probably find them at WP:VPT. ColinFine (talk) 16:09, 27 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]

    Neil Sean[edit]

All of the information included on my bio page which I did not instruct myself is detrimental to the one I wish to put up. The information is totally incorrect in every single facet and is now causing a problem to my business of which if not removed will prove very damaging and I will be looking to towards your company as to why this has been allowed to be made public, please remove 194.6.254.76 (talk) 10:14, 27 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Assuming you are Neil Sean, the content of the article about you (which is not owned by you) depends on what reliable sources have published about you and not on what you want it to say. As you are the article's subject, you have a conflict of interest and should not edit it yourself. You may suggest edits to the article at Talk:Neil Sean. I'll just add this link which basically says the same thing: Wikipedia:Contact us/Article subjects.  —Smalljim  10:34, 27 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]
If you really mean "The information is totally incorrect in every single facet" then the article must be about somebody else. I see you changed the names of Neil Sean's parents.[5] His own book says "Alan Scott and Ann Montini (my mother and father)".[6] That's the names in our article. Is there anyone here who can review my page?[edit]

    Anyone? Lennox Levine (talk) 10:56, 27 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]

    Australian Musicals[edit]

The 1982 Australian Musical "Starstruck" is not in your list of Australian musicals. 211.30.22.100 (talk) 13:19, 27 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]

I don't know how to add it to the list, or even if that is still possible, or I would add it myself, If someone could add it, that would be great. It stars 'Jo Kennedy' and is rather hard to find since a Disney musical of the same name has been released. 211.30.22.100 (talk) 13:31, 27 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Seems to me that it's the article Starstruck (1982 film). LightNightLights (talkcontribs) 13:33, 27 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Please give the exact title or URL of any page you want help with. There is no page called "Australian Musicals" or "List of Australian musicals". If you refer to Category:Australian musical films then Starstruck (1982 film) is in the subcategory Category:Australian musical comedy-drama films. We don't usually list a film in both a subcategory and its parent category. If you refer to Category:Australian musicals then it's for stage musicals and not films. Which links should be included in politician's wikiboxes?[edit]

I noticed that some of them have just their official government website, some have just their personal campaign site, while other have both their official government website and their personal campaign site.

Which of these combinations is preferable? Thank you. CGP05 (talk) 13:37, 27 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Hello, CGP05. At the end of the External links guideline, you will find note "h", which says Situations in which multiple official links are typically provided include: The biography of an elected official might link to both an official government website and the official's political party or campaign website (see, e.g., Barack Obama, Narendra Modi). Thank you! CGP05 pr(talk) 18:32, 27 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Of course, Barack Obama is no longer an elected official, but the general principle still applies. Cullen328 (talk) 19:35, 27 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Meant to keep new page as draft, but inadvertently caused it to go live[edit]

I thought I was drafting the new page "Peter Hruschka", with the intention of several more drafts before submitting it for review. But somehow it has gone live. Is there a way to convert it to draft? Camdenmaine (talk) 13:42, 27 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]

@Camdenmaine: As seen with the "Draft" prefix in Draft:Peter Hruschka, your draft is still in draftspace. Drafts are public, even when they haven't made it onto mainspace yet. —Tenryuu 🐲 ( 💬 • 📝 ) 14:06, 27 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@Tenryuu, the page was in mainspace when Camdenmaine asked, but was then moved to draftspace two minutes later. TSventon (talk) 14:11, 27 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]

How to transfer a User:Name page to a normal Wikipedia page[edit]

I would like to get rid of the user: in front of my webpage, User:Langekuettner

    How can I do this? Langekuettner (talk) 14:38, 27 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]

@Langekuettner: I have moved the page to User:Langekuettner/Sandbox. Please read WP:Autobiography, WP:V and WP:N. If or when you think the page meets the criteria set out on those pages, you may submit it for review using the process described at WP:AFC. Please note that it currently does not, as it cites a lot of your own publications, but no reliable, independent sources about you. Andy Mabbett (Pigsonthewing); Talk to Andy; Andy's edits 15:00, 27 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Your user page is intended as a place for the named person to tell about themselves as a Wikipedia user; the sandbox is where drafts can be developed. 331dot (talk) 21:33, 27 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]

    References in lists of publications[edit]

I sometimes see articles with a list of publications (or bibliography, further reading etc.) that include a reference to the listed publication. For example:

    • Jane Doe (1908), Publication Title[1]

    References

    1. ^ Jane Doe (1908), Publication Title

There's nothing wrong with this, but it seems redundant. Is there a guideline or essay addressing or discouraging the practice? 76.14.122.5 (talk) 17:29, 27 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Yes. As with many other things, Wikipedia supports different standards or approaches, and does not call for consistency except within an article. See WP:CITESTYLE. ColinFine (talk) 18:38, 27 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]
There is usually something extra in the reference like a publisher, ISBN number or external link. Do you have a real example? PrimeHunter (talk) 20:27, 27 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]

How to figure out what image to include on a Wikipedia page?[edit]

Hi, I want to include a picture of Mia Mulder to her Wikipedia page. I looked for images on Wikimedia but I wasn't able to find any. Online, there are a lot of photos from user-generated content sites. Are these allowed to be uploaded, or should I find an "official" image? Where can I upload images? pauliesnug (message / contribs) 21:57, 27 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]
