When Napoleon III and his city planner Baron Haussmann planned out how to make Paris the most beautiful city in Europe, the first step, naturally, was to grant large sweeps of land near the center of the city to Haussmann's friends and financial supporters. This drove the original inhabitants to the edges of the city: Is this true? It's the view, one of a series of the Boulevard Montmartre, from Camille Pissarro's room at the Hotel de Russie, which he rented in February 1897, since outdoor light dazzled his weak eyes. The Hôtel de Russie was on the corner of the Boulevard des Italiens and the Rue Drouot. Not Montmartre, as Brendan H points out. Wetman 14:27, 30 Apr 2004 (UTC)

Joined Paris?[edit]

When did Montmartre become part of Paris? The article mentions the part of its history when it was outside the city limits, but doesn't say when, why, etc. it became part of the city. -- Gyrofrog (talk) 05:12, 18 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]

With redevlopment of the city, Baron Haussman began by razing many working-class neighbourhoods in central Paris, he thereby unwittingly encouraged the development of Montmartre (which had been annexed to Paris in 1860). Svaneska 21:14, 26 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]

21st Century[edit]

This section doesn't have a great deal about the place in the 21st Century. What are the average house prices, crime figures, what is the population level, ethic mix, etc, that kind of thing? Do people live there, or is it just a tourist destination? Also, "the area is ... largely known for a wide variety of adult novelty; from simple multimedia shops to shows to professional courtesans" sounds like a very weak euphemism for red light district; is this the case?

Lot's of folks live in the Montmartre district. And it's mostly Pigalle (below the southwest end of the butte) that's the red-light district.

Folks, this ain't the best of articles. But instead of just pointing out what it lacks, how about making some useful additions to it?
