ABSOLUTELY AGREE. Adding my support to this thread - I just read about this group today in "The Sullivanians: Sex, Psychotherapy, and the Wild Life of an American Commune" and this article really gives me the creeps. I'm going to edit this to try and at least remove some of the self-indulgent editorial-speak if nobody else has taken a crack at it later this week. Stumbled across an article about EST while looking for something else[edit]
Just thought I would let you all know about it. You can access it by getting a Wikipedia Library Card and applying for newspapers.com (a fairly trivial task). 23 Dec 1975 edition of the Courier-Post (Camden, New Jersey) page 17. Article by Jurate Kazickas about going to EST sessions. Seems to be an Associated Press article, so it may be available in other places. Title of the article is "What is, is... what ain't, ain't". In June 1978, during the recording of Incantations, Oldfield and his siblings completed a three-day Exegesis seminar, a controversial self-assertiveness programme based on Werner Erhard's EST training programme. The experience had a significant effect on Oldfield's personality, who recalled that he underwent a "rebirth experience" by reliving past fears. "It was like opening some huge cathedral doors and facing the monster, and I saw that the monster was myself as a newborn infant, because I'd started life in a panic." Following the Exegesis seminar, the formerly reclusive Oldfield granted press interviews, posed nude for a promotional photo shoot for Incantations, and went drinking with news reporters.
