eagle-owl (Bubo maximus)[edit]

What about south european eagle-owl or great owl (Bubo maximus)? Or this list isn't comprehensive? --grin ✎ 17:18, 2004 Dec 20 (UTC)

no such species in HBW, or any other book, and the only listed subspecies is ascalaphus, the N African form, which HBW splits. jimfbleak 06:50, 21 Dec 2004 (UTC)

Name[edit]

Considering that the eagle-owl, formally Eurasian eagle-owl, is the type species, and that all but two or three species of the traditional genus Bubo are called eagle-owls, I'm wondering why the article has the name "horned owl". Perhaps it follows Encyclopedia Britannica's American perspective? Wouldn't "Bubo (owl)" or "Bubo (genus)" be a better name? Afasmit (talk) 19:33, 3 December 2009 (UTC)[reply]

The name "eagle-owl" isn't exclusive to countries outside North America. I'm American and my National Geographic book on birds (which is written in American English) calls them eagle-owls instead of horned owls, likely because of how awkward it is to call the genus horned owls when the Snowy Owl lacks "horns." But to avoid any arguments between the two terms, I think calling this article Bubo or Bubo (genus) would be better. --Evice (talk) 17:09, 28 December 2010 (UTC)[reply]
