How could he have died of syphillis if popes and clergymen aren't allowed to have sexual intercourse?

By having sexual intercourse when he wasn't "allowed" to. - Nunh-huh 21:36, 13 Mar 2005 (UTC)
How can a Catholic have sex before marriage?
the same way as everybody else. - Nunh-huh 21:36, 13 Mar 2005 (UTC)

That said, it's clearly problematic to baldly assert he died of syphilis. It's not clear that syphilis existed in Europe before contact with the New World in the fifteenth century. - Nunh-huh 21:36, 13 Mar 2005 (UTC)

It's gone now. It was added anonymously, has propagated thru the Internet, but other than sites that mirror Wikipedia, I find no support for the notion. Nor does "Sex Lives of the Popes" suggest anything of the sort about Celestine III. So until/unless we find a reputable source that actually claims he died of syphilis, it's gone. - Nunh-huh 21:47, 13 Mar 2005 (UTC)
