Deletion that needs NPOVing[edit]

removed paragraph that was originally in the Molly Meldrum article which has now been merged here, as it is incoherent and needs npoving clarkk

Molly was involved in a TV roast by the Nine network. The Roast was hosted by "who wants to be a Millionare,s" Eddie Maguire and featured the footy show,s Sam Newman. Unfortunately Some of the comments made by Eddie were far too derogatory and the roast went horribly wrong, resulting in it being described as a "Gay Bashing" by Molly.

Gee, that Lana Cantrell gets around[edit]

This article states that a publicly reported engagement to singer Lana Cantrell was soon revealed to be a hoax. Wasn't that Graham Kennedy who had a hoax aborted engagement to Cantrell (mentioned on Kennedy's Wikipedia entry though I have read about it in a separated book as well) or did Meldrum go down that path as well? MinorEdit July 9, 2005 06:19 (UTC)

Lana Cantrell wasn't enagaed to Molly Meldrum, the hoax enagagement was to Graham Kennedy.

Molly[edit]

The human name "Molly" is perceived as a feminine name. How common do males get called by names that the American English mind commonly percieves as feminine?? Georgia guy 18:59, 19 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Meldrum is gay. In earlier decades it was common for gay men to nickname one another with a feminine name, hence "Molly". It was widely known that "Molly" was a nickname, he was frequently also named as "Ian Meldrum" in the press, etc. It is not at all common for a man to be called "Molly"! Meldrum is rather an unusual figure, the odd name being just one eccentricity. Asa01 05:20, 29 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Proposed to move to Molly Meldrum[edit]

This page was listed at Wikipedia:Requested moves requesting that it be moved to Molly Meldrum because "He is better known as Molly Meldrum". Is there agreement here for making this move? —Centrxtalk • 02:25, 29 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]

  • Oppose move. 'Ian' is his proper name, 'Molly' is a silly nickname. – Axman () 09:39, 30 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I am for this move. Molly is what he calls himself, is referred to in the press and is what everyone refers to him as. Infact many would be unaware Ian is his first name. Similarly we don't call Doug Walters Kevin Walters.

I think this one is six of one, half a dozen of the other. Ian and Molly are both recognisable - while Molly is more in use in Australia, most references to him in the US are to Ian, since Molly doesn't translate all that well. Yes, there are references to him in the US - he was turned away at the airport for having the wrong visa when the "anti-terrorist" changes started kicking in. Hey, that should go in the article. Cite needed for "gay"[edit]

While I have no doubt Meldrum is gay, I had a terrible time searching the web for a reliable source that indicated such. Does anyone have such an animal? A cite, I mean. :) -- SatyrTN (talk | contribs) 01:55, 6 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]

What about the Michael Jackson scoop![edit]

Molly first interviewed a very young and shy Michael after he ventured out as a solo performer in his teens and was later rewarded with another(guarded)interview which, by my memory, was something of a world scoop at the time... —Preceding unsigned comment added by 220.239.211.251 (talk) 05:41, 5 November 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Fair use rationale for Image:MollyMeldrum.jpg[edit]

Image:MollyMeldrum.jpg is being used on this article. I notice the image page specifies that the image is being used under fair use but there is no explanation or rationale as to why its use in this Wikipedia article constitutes fair use. In addition to the boilerplate fair use template, you must also write out on the image description page a specific explanation or rationale for why using this image in each article is consistent with fair use.

Please go to the image description page and edit it to include a fair use rationale. Using one of the templates at Wikipedia:Fair use rationale guideline is an easy way to insure that your image is in compliance with Wikipedia policy, but remember that you must complete the template. Do not simply insert a blank template on an image page.

If there is other fair use media, consider checking that you have specified the fair use rationale on the other images used on this page. Note that any fair use images lacking such an explanation can be deleted one week after being tagged, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. Did Molly Meldrum have a show on US MTV?[edit]

I remember receiving some older VHS tapes from a generous individual who had recorded a few Molly Meldrum specials that aired on US MTV back in the mid - late 1980s and I was wondering if he had either had his own program on US MTV or if it was from another source and rebroadcasted on that channel. I'm having trouble locating an entry on IMDb that matches the name of the program I saw and I know for sure it was on US MTV since the bumpers clearly show it as having been aired there. Thanks. 68.94.173.228 (talk) 23:05, 20 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Ian Meldrum's hometown[edit]

I am very sure Ian Meldrum is from the town of Kyabram in Victoria, Australia. Though it shows Melbourne on the wikipedia page. Should it be changed to his proper hometown or just leave it on Melbourne? Thanks. Cadbury egg (talk) 11:32, 12 May 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Well, this, which otherwise seems to contain only factual information, says he was born at sea off the coast of South Yemen!! Or is that just an anagram of "youth semen"? -- JackofOz (talk) 19:39, 25 September 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Uptight[edit]

I remember him as a regular commentator on Ross D. Wylie's show Uptight. We make one passing reference to this show, but nothing about the early profile that Uptight gave Meldrum. It was as big as Countdown in its day. What ever happened to Wylie anyway? -- Jack of Oz ... speak! ... 11:27, 22 December 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Relative?[edit]

Is Meldrum related to US conspiracy author, Bruce Porter Roberts? This is claimed by 137.219.163.98 on 2 July 2010 and by 137.219.163.89 on 28 August. I have reverted both of these edits and request a reliable source for the claim. The exact nature or extent of their relatedness is not explained and so the significance of the relation can not be determined.

If, in fact, they are closely related a statement could be included in Meldrum's 'Personal life' section but without significant influence on Meldrum's life Bruce Porter Roberts should not be included in the Lead. For comparison: his brother, Robert, is mentioned in the 'Personal life' section but he is not a notable influence on Meldrum's public life and so Robert is not included in the Lead.shaidar cuebiyar (talk) 22:16, 29 August 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Edit request on 15 December 2011[edit]

Further information has just been released by the medical team attending to Molly. He has fallen about 3 metres whilst installing Xmas decorations in the spa area of his home. He was in a coma when found, it was not induced at hospital, and has further injuries including broken ribs, a punctured lung, and head injuries which resulted in bleeding into the brain. His situation is life threatening.

Year of birth[edit]

On Talkback radio station 3AW today, host Derryn Hinch mentioned that Molly was 69 years old, turning 70 next year. Another announcer with Derryn at the time said that Wikipedia said he was 65 years old, but apparently this is an incorrect age. Is there any definitive proof which year Molly was born? Unimaginable666 (talk) 13:39, 22 December 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Media were also saying he was 61 (some did say 65 but I assume they got it from Wiki) just after the new broke about the fall. Bidgee (talk) 13:46, 22 December 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Since an IP has changed the date, I've commented it out. We need a reliable source (one before the fall, not after), so do not readd if you don't have a reliable source. Bidgee (talk) 23:55, 22 December 2011 (UTC)[reply]
His own Facebook page says 29 January 1946 = 65 years old. -- Jack of Oz [your turn] 00:18, 23 December 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Same date given here almost one year ago. WWGB (talk) 06:01, 23 December 2011 (UTC)[reply]

I had a go at this earlier, and found that his year of birth was not straight forward. National Library of Australia (NLA) has 1940, see here. Which makes him 72 in a five weeks time. However this conflicts with Meldrum's interview with Denton in 2003, here, where Meldrum claims to be in same class as John Williamson (born November 1945) while growing up in Quambatook. Eliezer gives Meldrum's birth as being January 29 in 1946 in Orbost, see archive copy from an excerpt of his 2007 book, High Voltage Rock 'n' Roll. All up 1946 is found in most reliable sources except that nagging problem at NLA. I think the 1946 should stay.shaidar cuebiyar (talk) 04:58, 24 December 2011 (UTC) Note: NLA also has 1946, here, and sometimes both 1940 and 1946, here.shaidar cuebiyar (talk) 05:33, 24 December 2011 (UTC)[reply]

To add to the confusion, this article dated 18 July 1983 has him stating that he was 38 at the time, which equates to a 1945 year of birth. A 1982 Women's Weekly article says he was "born on a ship outside Aden in 1946".--Melburnian (talk) 06:19, 24 December 2011 (UTC)[reply]
On that last point, see "Ian Meldrum's hometown" above. -- Jack of Oz [your turn] 06:39, 24 December 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Yes, it's a long way from Orbost. Melburnian (talk) 06:53, 24 December 2011 (UTC)[reply]
I take it this Aden/South Yemen thing is complete rubbish. But how on Earth could such a story have arisen? -- Jack of Oz [your turn] 07:29, 24 December 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Not sure on that one. I'm also not sure about the article's current birthplace source which states "He was born January 29 in 1946 in Orbost, in Victoria's regional wheat area of the Mallee".--Melburnian (talk) 08:00, 24 December 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Ah, I think I've found the answer here Melburnian (talk) 08:44, 24 December 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Excellent sleuthing, Sherlock. So, 29 January 1943, eh. None of the alternative theories had that one in their sights. Seems young Molly was being a bit disingenuous when he said he was 38 in July 1983, at which time he was actually 40. Still, there's a long tradition of theatrical types fudging their true ages, sometimes putting many different years on the public record, all of them wrong. See Eileen Joyce for a past mistress of this activity. -- Jack of Oz [your turn] 10:41, 24 December 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Poor bugger. He goes Knockin' on Heaven's Door and we add three hidden years to his age! WWGB (talk) 11:34, 24 December 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Some might say that if Wikipedia and her creatures had been doing their job properly, this info would have been revealed a long time ago. It would have been discovered eventually, whether this latest drama had happened or not. - Jack of Oz [your turn] 12:57, 24 December 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Now if only you super sleuths could find Christina Amphletts birth record which is 1954 not 1959. Can't believe people continue with the outright lie that she was born in 1959. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 180.150.37.22 (talk) 08:36, 30 January 2022 (UTC)[reply]
