I would like to apologize for some of the boorish comments being made toward contributers. I appreciate all those who take time and effort to keep wikipedia from being a vast expanse of empty pages. Your writing, links, and other info is always welcome. Please don't be discouraged by the grouches.

Page organization[edit]

Many of the listings here are duplicate names for the same knot. Shouldn't we mark this somehow? For instance:

Purpose?[edit]

At the current time the Category:Knots does not directly produce this list, there they are subdivided into 19 sub-categories by their function(not of name). It is slightly useful to be able to look at all given knots by their name in one place (not all the spellings of names in search will redirect to proper page) and not have to know ahead of time what classification is of the knot your looking for happens. Plus a few pages have or have had links to the page. This page is probably a little redundant due to search. (WikipedianYknOK 09:28, 15 March 2007 (UTC))[reply]

Hackamore?[edit]

While not sure what the knot is, a "hackamore" is like a bridle, except that there is no bit placed into the horse's mouth. Instead, the device uses leverage in order to place pressure upon a the animal's head, near its nasal passages, for the purpose of restricting the animal's air supply. Josephine knot[edit]

"Josephine knot" is an alternate name for the Carrick bend. There are so many alternate names for the Carrick bend, not all of them have redirects or links in this list. --Dfred (talk) 16:15, 6 October 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Knots around the globe[edit]

Somewhat off topic, but here goes nothing... I'm currently writing/editing some articles regarding knots in several language versions of Wikipedia, but sometimes find it hard to tie my writings together, inter-wiki wise... Most printed dictionaries only include rather a few names of knots, and only give a translation in two languages. I've had no luck finding the information on the Internet, either. If any of you fellow Wikipedians can share a link to an online-dictionary specialized in knots and ropewalks and such, it would be of great help! I know it's a slightly weird request, but there's dictionaries for most any field of work on the 'Net, so why not knots... :) For obvious reasons I'm mainly interested in translations between languages I speak myself, i.e. English, Swedish, German and Danish. Pictures[edit]

I suggest that each knot's picture be included in this page. I personally implemented the grid style on List_of_hitch_knots, and think the page is better because of it. Additional butterfly knot[edit]

Tension tightening device, used by the military in constructing "hasty" rope bridges, will not tighten upon itself.

Wrap 4 coils around one hand, maintain and remove coils. Pass what was the outer two coils through the inner two. Then pass what is now the outer two back through the inner two. Maintaining grasp on those two coils tighten with standing ends, adjusting as necessary.
