disambiguation [thanks for the dab Java, RW] mfc 21:33, 3 Jan 2004 (UTC)

NT2[edit]

Hello. I'd just like to say "thanks" for the dab work on (at least!) two articles I created. I do appreciate your willingness to fine-tune badly linked articles with what must be, after all, grunt work. So again, here's a big thanks for making everything run that much smoother. And I'll try to link better in the future myself. Ensiform 05:38, 12 Jan 2004 (UTC)

NT3[edit]

Thanks for your comments,

I'm doing most of my work in Spanish and I need to pass all the images here. I don't know how long it's gonna take me but I'll do it. When I wrote for the Sugacubes' albums I didn't mean to write about the songs but about the singles separated released and by doing so I could match some info about producers and other artits involved

Kind regards, Lmb 01:41, 8 Feb 2004 (UTC)

Rush disambiguation[edit]

Thanks. Done. HAND --Phil 08:13, Feb 12, 2004 (UTC)

Rush is one of my favorite bands so I had a personal interest in doing it as well! RedWolf 04:50, Feb 18, 2004 (UTC)
Ditto. I recall when I was at boarding school and my Grandma came with my family to visit, I had a Rush tape cued up in my tape deck. She switched it on to see what I was listening to, and I was expecting some sarcastic comment: she was an LRAM, qualified as a piano accompanist (which is about as hard and impressive as qualifications get). What she actually said was that the band worked together really well and sounded as if they were enjoying themselves, which is about as big a musical compliment as you would ever hear from her. --Phil 09:28, Feb 18, 2004 (UTC)

Adminship?[edit]

I decided that it was about time you were an admin, so I took the liberty to nominate you. You'll need to visit Wikipedia:Requests_for_adminship and note whether you accept or decline at some point (there's no rush). Stewart Adcock 17:47, 17 Feb 2004 (UTC)

Thanks for the nomination Stewart -- I have accepted. RedWolf 04:48, Feb 18, 2004 (UTC)

Apache disambiguation[edit]

Hi, nice work for disambiguation of Apache. Sure there are a lot of them. I was wondering can you disambiguate Apache in computing context to Apache HTTP Server instead of Apache Software Foundation. I think most of time, Apache means the server not people who maintain it. -- Taku 05:13, Feb 19, 2004 (UTC)

Hi. Thanks. I used HTTP Server where I thought it was either explicity referring to the web server or in context of such. Otherwise, I used ASF when it seemed to be referring to the organization. I did resolve the majority of them to HTTP Server. RedWolf 05:19, Feb 19, 2004 (UTC)

Okay. That was all what I wanted to say. Keep your good work. -- Taku 05:22, Feb 19, 2004 (UTC)

Sysop[edit]

Congratulations! You are now an administrator. You should read the relevant policies and other pages linked to from the administrators' reading list before carrying out tasks like deletion, protection, banning users, and editing protected pages such as the Main Page. Most of what you do is easily reversible by other sysops, apart from page history merges and image deletion, so please be especially careful with those. Good luck. Angela. 23:30, Feb 24, 2004 (UTC)

Thanks Angela for the joyous news, links and info. Hopefully I can stay out of trouble as a result! :) RedWolf 04:24, Feb 26, 2004 (UTC)

Redirecting talk pages?[edit]

So, uh, why is Talk:Rock climbing area a redirect to a talk page of a completely different article? That's kind of strange, plus makes it difficult to discuss the article of which it is a talk page... Stan 03:56, 27 Feb 2004 (UTC)

Before my edit, it was re-directed to "Talk:List_of_rock_climbing_areas", which itself was a redirect to Talk:List of climbing areas so I simply substituted the second redirect for Talk:Rock climbing area. I was unaware until now, there was a Talk:Climbing area. However, I see it is a currently a redirect to Talk:List of climbing areas. Looks like the issue started when someone originally redirected the talk page for one of "climbing area" pages to its associated "list" page. That is, Talk:Rock climbing area was re-directed to Talk:List_of_rock_climbing_areas. RedWolf 04:15, Feb 27, 2004 (UTC)
MAHH BRANE HUHTS! :-)

White perch VFD[edit]

So what was the result of White perch being on VFD? The vfd notice is still on the page if it was decided to keep the page. RedWolf 04:48, Feb 27, 2004 (UTC)

Actually, I meant to put it on "clean-up", it never went on VfD. I've changed its msg now. -- user:zanimum
Ah, ok, wondering why I couldn't find it in the VfD archives. Thanks. RedWolf 02:23, Feb 28, 2004 (UTC)

I don't even remember putting mixed vegetables on VFD, but I went through a brief period of posting recipes there, to be transwikied to Wikibooks and then deleted. I waded into a controversy I didn't know existed, got called an anti-Albanian bigot, and drifted away from the argument (though I continue to have an opinion.) The discussion has been moved to Talk:List of recipes/Delete.

Thanks for the comments directly to me about apocatastasis. This approach is a lot more helpful when concerns arise over an article than a VfD entry. Of course, this is impossible when only anonymous users without talk pages are the contributors. I am usually quite happy to look for compromises in articles where I have been a significant participant. In its earlier incarnation I agree that the concept was nothing more than a dictionary definition, but my feeling is that it is also a theological concept that has had some influence over the years. It would be nice to expand the stub.

I also think that there are better ways of dealing with a Wikipedia article that should really be in a sister project. Rather than outright deletion it would cause less aggravation if a message were left on the page such as The article which was previously here was more properly a dictionary definition. To read this definition please go to Wiktionary: ... This could remain harmlessly as a stub indefinitely, Eclecticology 08:01, 2004 Mar 4 (UTC)

object file formats[edit]

Heh, I think I had it on my list to expound on further, but don't actually remember now. The todo section is basically me typing in scrawled notes on postits so I can clear my desk, not always that coherent! :-) Stan 05:51, 5 Mar 2004 (UTC)

Image deletion[edit]

The image you uploaded was listed on Wikipedia:Possible copyright infringements on March 2nd. The image text indicated that you were the copyright owner and agreed to the GFDL but you added text indicating further restrictions on the copyright that did not meet the requirements of GFDL. If you will remove those additional restrictions and release your image solely under the GFDL I will undelete the image or you can reupload it. Is that acceptable? - Texture 03:59, 10 Mar 2004 (UTC)

Sorry I seemed a bit abrupt about this, but as it happened I had good reason without realising it: just as I was about to add a (hopefully) soothing message to your talk page (i.e. here :-) Mozilla died on me. Completely. What I was going to say was I hoped you weren't put out by my tone. See you around. --Phil | Talk 11:06, Mar 30, 2004 (UTC)

MD[edit]

It would be better if you disambiguated MD with Doctor of Medicine instead of doctorate. --Jiang 01:39, 2 Apr 2004 (UTC)

If I had been aware of that page (it was not listed on the MD page), I would have used it. I'll remember to use it next time. Thanks for the info. RedWolf 01:45, Apr 2, 2004 (UTC)

Ampersand[edit]

Some good editing with Triumph. However I noticed in the Wikipedia Style Guide (Naming Conventions) it says the use of the ampersand should be avoided in article titles re. Triumph album Rock & Roll Machine. Iam 08:44, Apr 2, 2004 (UTC)

Hmm, good point. Apparently, the &, "and" or 'N' was used depending on the country of issue which made it somewhat confusing at first when I wrote the article as I have the CD with 'N'. I have moved the page to Rock and Roll Machine. RedWolf 19:59, Apr 2, 2004 (UTC)
I'm still trying to work out why it can't be used, whether it is simply etiquette or a bug. Iam 00:29, Apr 3, 2004 (UTC)
According to Wikipedia:Naming conventions (technical restrictions), & is not a disallowed character. RedWolf 05:07, Apr 4, 2004 (UTC)
It looks like they have fixed the bug but have forgotten to remove the notice from the Naming Conventions page. Iam

Song Lists[edit]

We're going to have to give serious consideration in splitting up the song pages further. Both S and W are rapidly approaching the 100kb mark. The "list of people by name" is a good template to start on the way they have formatted things alphabetically and split it into subpages. I'm going to have a look at various ways we can do this. Iam 01:17, Apr 11, 2004 (UTC)

S L O W[edit]

from the pump

Is it just me? Wikipedia has been very slow for the past several days. Sometimes, I get decent response time, other times, it's pitiful. I've substantially reduced my editing time because it's not worth the painful wait. I don't see anything in the announcements or goings-on. I saw one comment in the Announcements history about an issue with one of the web servers but it was promptly removed. What's the story? RedWolf 04:26, Apr 14, 2004 (UTC)

Same here. At one point I even got a Host Not Found error message. Not sure why. -- chris_73 04:52, 14 Apr 2004 (UTC)
Look at the traffic graph and the response time graph. As you can see, it's been slower than normal for the last few days. There's a number of things going on which could influence this. Coronelli went down, replaced by a borrowed machine from Bomis called curly. This caused slow response for about half a day while curly built up a cache. More recently, moreri has been taken out of the webserver rotation in order to dedicate it to compressing the old revisions of the larger wikis. Thus, we've been running on 4 webservers instead of 5. Compressing the old table is essentially a means of buying time while we wait for a bigger hard drive. -- Tim Starling 05:19, Apr 14, 2004 (UTC)

Kilimanjaro[edit]

Interested in climbing kili? Be sure to get a good guide. I climbed it in 1999 and had some trouble with a guide who didn't know the way (You need a guide by law to climb kili) I wrote up my story of it if youre interested: Kili Climbing Story Seabhcan 15:33, 20 Apr 2004 (UTC)

Hi. Interesting story of your climb. Sounds to me like that might have been the first time, not the 10th time for your "guide". We are considering the Machame or Rongai routes, the Marangu (Coca-cola route) was discarded a while back by us. I've done a lot of scrambling in my days and a bit of glacier travel. I'd give more consideration to some of the more demanding routes but the other person is not quite up to that. You sure didn't leave much time for acclimatization. I spent two nights in a tent at nearly 5100m in Nepal and while not easy I was comfortable after being above 4,000m for 9 days. RedWolf 04:10, Apr 24, 2004 (UTC)
Ya. The guide was a bit of a chancer allright. There is a problem with kili guides in that most of the best known guide companies are based in kenya but Tanzanian law forbids kenyans from guiding on Kili. The kenyan companies will find you a tanzanian guide, but you really have to trust them to trust him. Tanzanians can guide on mount kenya, however. The Machame and Rongai routes aren't (If I'm remembering right - its been a number of years) much more than tough hikes, and I didn't have experience of anything more technical at the time. Also, 5100m in Nepal is far more difficult than the same height at the equator. Its to do with the Coriolis effect - the atmosphere is thicker at the equator and so the percentage of oxygen at a particular height is more. Good luck with your trip - and dont eat the salad! Seabhcan 15:49, 25 Apr 2004 (UTC)

Greetings! Saw your Kilimanjaro post on the user page. I was just wondering if you've made any plant to this end, and had any ideas on the timeframe and such for the climb? I'm most definitely interested, sounds like it would be fun. Metlin 12:22, 30 Aug 2004 (UTC)

Hi. I would be looking either at the late January - February or late August - September timeframe for any attempt on Kili. I would do Mt. Kenya first for acclimitization although there's an alternate in Tanzania. RedWolf 05:13, Aug 31, 2004 (UTC)

Ahhh, I climbed the cola route in '98 and have been longing to go back. I would love to try Rongai. Next summer might be possible. +sj + 10:54, 10 Dec 2004 (UTC)

West Papua, Grasberg[edit]

Hi, you did a 'dab' for Java on the 'West Papua' page last week; if you have time could you have a look at the content which 'Wik' is reverting out and give any feedback/ideas on the discussion page? I've tried talking with him but no go, I'm happy to backup all my content (mostly already backed up by indicated external links i think). Hope you have a great time on your trip later this year, all best.:)Daeron 03:33, 24 Apr 2004 (UTC)

Vocabulary Project[edit]

Hi, I saw you like travelling, and you have IT skills, so I wondered if you might be interested in project I am starting with soem people from here, wikibooks, and wiktionary. Check my page and let me know what you think about it. Probably you are busy right now with your Kili project - good luck, want to try that later as well - but maybe later. Get-back-world-respect 10:06, 25 Apr 2004 (UTC)

Hi. I don't think I would have the time at present to assist in this project as I'm in two other WikiProjects which still need a lot of ongoing work to be done. As well, with spring finally here, I will have less time for Wikipedia in general. Good luck with your project. RedWolf 16:52, Apr 25, 2004 (UTC)

Album Info[edit]

Many Thanx for your comments regarding the chronology. You have probably noticed that User:ScudLee and myself are in the process of trying to clean up the album pages, but this will probably take the next month to reduce the following lists Needs infobox and Incomplete infobox to a managable size. As I progress through these I will obviously revert any offending styles that I manage to notice, but obviously we are working on many articles that already have started/written. apologies for incorrect formatting. I'm still unsure about the inclusion of the recorded box on the template as unless you actually own the album, the requested details suggested on Wikipedia:WikiProject Albums are hard to find and if you do have them can lead to a very large box being required. I personally would suggest moving these to a ==Recording Details== heading in the article itself. This is the main omission from the boxes still requiring info. and will keep the list relatively long for some time.Scraggy4 18:53, 9 May 2004 (UTC)[reply]

Info[edit]

I was just reading the entry for Regina and it was great. I had no idea that those trees were from that meadow (I've lived here my whole life though). I just wanted to say that was pretty neat. I haven't added much (anything) to Wikipedia but maybe I should. I'm a student at the UofR. -Steven

Java[edit]

re your comments about my Java link:

Redwolf, good spot but the link is there precisely so I can pick up non disambiguated references to it. I know perfectly well what the correct link is since I did an awful lot of the original disambiguation back in the days of / disambiguation :) Sjc

New MediaWiki software broke Mountain template[edit]

For a wretched example, see Mount Rainier. Mav and I came up with a potential solution (see Wikipedia Talk:WikiProject Mountains), but we wanted to check with you before running around and changing lots of pages. What do you think? Wikipedia:WikiProject_Climbing[edit]

I am starting Wikipedia:WikiProject_Climbing, I hope. Perhaps you might be interested?

I don't really do any technical climbing, just some basic mountaineering and scrambling. I'll monitor the project for now. RedWolf 21:46, Jun 12, 2004 (UTC)

Mountain categories[edit]

I probably should have raised this when I saw you make Category:North American mountains, sorry. Doesn't it make more sense to put Category:Mountains of the United States, Category:Mountains of Canada, and Category:Mountains of Mexico as sub-categories of Category:North American mountains, rather than putting articles in both the country and the continent? This seems to be the general consensus about categories so far, as I understand it: don't put articles in multiple categories which are closely related and join up quickly in the tree. People are talking about automatically listing all articles that live beneath a point in the category tree. Now, they may be smoking dope, but the principle makes sense to me.

If you believe this, then perhaps Category:North American mountains is not that useful, because it would only have 3 sub-categories, so perhaps it should be dropped in favor of just the country categories?

I apologize again if this means wasted work --- I'm happy to do the grunt work to whatever we decide is correct.

Transfer discussion to Wikipedia Talk:WikiProject Mountains ? -- hike395 20:21, 12 Jun 2004 (UTC)

I have added /Categories to the project and added my comments on the initial categorization. RedWolf 21:43, Jun 12, 2004 (UTC)

Bots and discussion pages[edit]

Please set your bot so that it does not modify discussion pages. These are statements signed by individuals and must remain unmodified. - Centrx 21:11, 5 Aug 2004 (UTC)

My understanding of disambiguation policy is that it is okay to disambiguate links on talk pages. If, however, they really meant to refer to the disambiguation page itself (e.g. English), I leave it alone. RedWolf 21:18, Aug 5, 2004 (UTC)

Rock & Roll[edit]

Rather than your "Robot-assisted disambiguation: rock", it would perhaps be better to change rock music from a redirect to rock and roll, into a page about "mainstream" rock music, which seems to be the only type of rock & roll not covered on the aforesaid. Andy Mabbett 21:46, 5 Aug 2004 (UTC)

Offline report update[edit]

Howdy. I noticed that you've updated Wikipedia:Offline reports/Is this really a stub? and wanted to ask if you used a Link Analysis Database, and if so did you experience any problems? I'd appreciate any feedback you have. - TB 10:48, Aug 6, 2004 (UTC)

Hi. Yes, I built a Link Analysis Database under Mac OS X. The database load took just over one hour and running the analysis script took about 2 hours I believe. Your comment say the analysis script takes 10 hours to run which makes me wonder a bit if I did everything correctly (I'm attributing it to faster system speed at the moment). The result count for the above report seemed to be comparable to what was there before. I just looked at the script run and noticed a few issues: extract_links.sql did not run. I guess I should re-run the analyze - what do you do to clear out the previous analyze run? Manually drop all the tables?
I didn't really run into any significant issues. I did write a quick C program to generate the extract scripts although I don't quite understand the deal with adjusting the "pos". One question I have is what do you do when you want to load a fresh database dump? Create a new database or just truncate/drop the existing tables? RedWolf 17:07, Aug 6, 2004 (UTC)
Glad to hear it worked - the script should take 1-2 hours to run on a modern PC, the 10 hours thing looked to me to be a bug in the MySQL optimiser, it was just plain refusing to use a perfectly good index. The 'pos' column is there to handle the lack of iterators (for, while, repeat etc) in MySQL 4.1 - a nasty hack that should vanish along with the need for the repetative 'extract_xxx.sql' scripts when version 5 arrives. To rebuild, I create a new database and start afresh each time. Any problems please do shout. - TB 18:54, Aug 6, 2004 (UTC)

Art categories[edit]

Hi,

I noticed that you have recently been active in editing categories in the visual arts. Can I also encourage you to join the categorisation discussion at Category talk:Art -- Solipsist 22:33, 6 Aug 2004 (UTC)

Hi. Um, are you sure it's me? What categories are you referring to? RedWolf 22:37, Aug 6, 2004 (UTC)
Well yes, reasonably sure. It was a couple of weeks ago Paul Kane - history - (took a while to find it again) - I had noticed that someone was adding a fair few Canadian painters, and so I was hoping to elicit a Canadian/America perspective on artist categories. But don't worry if it was just a random edit. -- Solipsist 23:05, 6 Aug 2004 (UTC)
Ah, okay that was back in June! I was just doing some basic categorization back then. I really don't know enough about art to really help in deciding how to categorize articles on art. I'm more of a Sciences person. :=) RedWolf 23:11, Aug 6, 2004 (UTC)

Other people's comments in talk pages[edit]

It's generally not polite to edit other people's comments in talk pages, even to (correctly) disambiguate. As an admin, you should know that. -- Jmabel 03:18, Aug 9, 2004 (UTC)

Umm, where is this policy explicitly stated? Just because I'm an admin doesn't mean I know every single policy out there. RedWolf 03:21, Aug 9, 2004 (UTC)
Please excuse my butting in, but I don't think it's a policy, it just sort of falls into wikiquette. Ilγαηερ (Tαlκ) 20:44, 3 Sep 2004 (UTC)

English[edit]

I've disambiguated English on my userpage, and thanks for being considerate and asking me rather than editing yourself. However, I wouldn't mind were you to disambiguate my userpage directly in the future. Andre 04:57, 3 Sep 2004 (UTC)

I, too, have disambiguated English on my userpage. I understand that it may be useful to know people's specific backgrounds so you or others can suggest certain topics they should look at. However, they are user pages and not actually critical pieces to the encyclopedia. Your efforts to clarify and disambiguate other pages of the encyclopedia would be much more useful than looking at userpages needing "clarification." Aurora (Say hi!)[[]] 17:45, Sep 3, 2004 (UTC)
I do plenty of disambiguation for pages in the regular name space. It's just that if you click "What links here" on the English page, it gets cluttered by all the links to user pages. RedWolf 17:49, Sep 3, 2004 (UTC)

French on Latin peoples[edit]

Excerpt from the history of the page Latin peoples :)

 • 20:48, 29 Aug 2004 RedWolf m (disambiguation: French)
 • 15:12, 30 Aug 2004 Joy (actually, that's the wrong disambiguation. we want a page on the ethnic French people which are mentioned in the page French, though not linked (they don't have a separate page).)
 • 19:11, 5 Sep 2004 RedWolf m (disambiguation: French)

Heh :) One of these days, the French people will get a page and we'll be able to put this aside... --Joy [shallot]

Disambiguation performed via a script so I don't usually remember which pages I disambiguate after several days, especially the French or English ones. Nevertheless, I'll try to remember this one now that it's been pointed out to me. RedWolf 04:28, Sep 6, 2004 (UTC)
I've changed it in the meantime to explicitly link to French people, in hope that someone will pick up on that hint. --Joy [shallot] 08:02, 6 Sep 2004 (UTC)
About the duplicate small -- that's intentional. The tag small works like that (equivalent of font size=-1 or so). --Joy [shallot]
Ok. I am unable to read it though, it's too small when running a monitor at high resolution. RedWolf 05:28, Sep 10, 2004 (UTC)

dab German[edit]

I happened to stumble over a changed linking you did on the article on Preventive war. It's probably no big deal, but you there changed German in the context of World War I to German, that in my perception is equal to German... Not quite perfect. ;->

I am not sure if I personally would have preferred a link to Imperial Germany, or if I think it's a superior solution to link to the brief list that clearly shows that the meaning of "Germany", and Germany itself, has morphed quite frequently after the Peace of Westphalia.

Anyway, I would appreciate if you shared your thoughts with me. I don't want to make you disturbed by unintentionally twarting your work. /Tuomas 05:25, 10 Sep 2004 (UTC)

Due to the many morphisms of Germany, it's sometimes difficult to properly disambiguate. I usually just use Germany when it relates to the country in general although sometimes I will choose a more specific period. I have no problem with your change. I don't think I've seen a discussion as to whether one should be choosy about which version of Germany to disambiguate to although I haven't looked that hard for such a discussion. I think it better to use particular period of Germany article when the context is taken into consideration. Feel free to update others as you fit, I don't expect to have a problems with that being done. RedWolf 05:54, Sep 10, 2004 (UTC)
Good. I'm not particularly knowing about Germany, so I don't think you'll see me doing much of such. Basically, I restrict myself to issues of Finnish matters, and matters Sweden and Finland have in common due to the 500+ years of shared history, and to lesser degree to issues of diplomacy and some general aspects of political science. This article happened to be on my watchlist. /Tuomas 06:31, 10 Sep 2004 (UTC)

Hi. I reverted that page because thumbnails generate smaller files that are downloaded, so using a large image thumbnailed is perfectly fine. Mintguy (T) 01:40, 18 Sep 2004 (UTC)

Where is the proof of this? RedWolf 03:00, Sep 18, 2004 (UTC)

I don't have a temporary internet files folder. Never assume everyone has been brainwashed by the evil empire. RedWolf 03:20, Sep 18, 2004 (UTC)

No Prayer for the Dying[edit]

The page was created by a hard banned user, User:Mr. Treason, and his contributions are reverted/deleted on sight at the moment. Since there's some suspicion that Mr. Treason might be Michael (Both edit from AOL frequently on music articles), there was the further danger of serious accuracy problems. If the article is all good, however, feel free to recreate it. It was just a case of better safe than sorry with hard banned users. Snowspinner 03:54, Sep 20, 2004 (UTC)

Image permissions[edit]

It appears that several images you uploaded originally were placed under a noncommercial-use license and that you subsequently changed this to GFDL. However, some have not been updated in this fashion. Would you mind clarifying the license on those images, and if they are licensed under GFDL, could you indicate that by replacing the existing tags with the GFDL template?

The images that have not been updated are:

 1. Image:Mount Robson South.jpg
 2. Image:Yoho_Natural_Bridge.jpg
 3. Image:Mt_Temple-75.jpg

Thanks for taking the time to look into this. --Michael Snow 05:02, 19 Sep 2004 (UTC)

The members, of course, will form and solidify the purpose, rules, officers, etc. but my idea (to kick things off) is to establish a group of us who will take responsiblity to see that the ideas of Data management are promoted and well represented in Wikipedia articles.

If you are willing to join the committee, please go to Category_talk:Data_management and indicate your acceptance of this invitation by placing your three tilde characters in the list.

I started Wikipedia:WikiProject Geography of Poland some time ago to settle the naming conventions for Polish Voivodships, powiats/counties and gmina/communes, as well as to create a set of infoboxes for use on these pages. I thought you might be interested. Halibutt 12:51, Oct 5, 2004 (UTC)

Wenatchee mountains[edit]

Hi, RedWolf.. I'm back from Wikiholiday, but only at minimal level. I just happened to stumble across your fresh Wenatchee Mountains article start. The Stuart Range is great, one of my favorite ranges. But, to my mind, the Stuart Range is not part of the Wenatchee mountains, they are separated by Ingalls Creek. The 250K:1 topo map is ambiguous [1], peakbagger.com agrees with your definition [2]. I was wondering: do you have definitive source for what is in/out of the Wenatchee mountains?

I know I have a digital photo of Mount Stuart somewhere on a CD-ROM, I'll see if I can dig it up.

-- hike395 15:00, 11 Oct 2004 (UTC)

Welcome back. I haven't gone on any declared wiki break myself but I've tried to cut down my time here as well. As to the question at hand, I have no definitive source declaring the Stuart Range part of Wenatchee Mountains. A google search produces pages that sometimes declares Mt. Stuart in the Wenatchee Mtns and other times in the Stuart Range. I originally was going to make the Stuart Range a separate article but when I saw peakbagger put the range also into Wenatchee, I decided to just leave it there for now. Feel free to break the Stuart Range out into a separate article. I'm not familiar with that area at all other than having heard/read about the Wenatchee Mountains in the past. It can be hard to write articles on mountain geography when even topo maps are ambiguous or two maps of the same area don't agree. RedWolf 20:27, Oct 11, 2004 (UTC)
I looked them up in the USGS GNIS server, which seemed to indicate they were three separate mountain ranges, so I made three articles: Wenatchee Mountains, Stuart Range, and Chiwaukum Mountains. Added pics/maps, too. -- hike395 03:51, 12 Oct 2004 (UTC)

Your message to Tmalmjursson re dab of Java...[edit]

Hi RedWolf. Thanks for your message to me - I am sorry I forgot to disambiguate the Java link on my page...I am a new Wikipedian, as you have already noted from your first post. I am still getting used to Wiki, but it isn't too hard. If you spot any other mistakes on my contributions, please let me know. My email link on my page is active. Thanks. Thor Malmjursson 17:25, 11 Oct 2004 (UTC)

Hi. Not a problem. Even more seasoned users such as myself sometimes get tripped up by concentrating on a particular subject when writing an article and forgetting about other meanings of terms. In articles, these types of things are regularly corrected by semi-automated processes. Don't be overly concerned at this point with disambiguation as over time it will be become second nature to do so as you edit articles. RedWolf 20:38, Oct 11, 2004 (UTC)

Cleaver Disappointment?[edit]

I just argued on Wikipedia:Votes for deletion/Cleaver for

 • Keep, for the sense, re glacier-bearing mountains in at least western N. Amer, of a rock formation flanked by two glaciers. (Even if the term is geographically restricted, it would be either a redir to the dominant term, or the target of the redirects from all the other regional terms.) These are important features in mountaineers' planning of ascent and traverse routes, and IMO an article could discuss what they have in common, probably different categories of them, and examples that affect notable routes.

But i count 4 Del to my 1 Keep, and 14 hours left.
--Jerzy(t) 10:39, 2004 Oct 18 (UTC)

I have voted to keep given the recent expansion of the article. RedWolf 03:31, Oct 19, 2004 (UTC)

Thanks for that; i discovered it pretty late in the game, but i think we slipped under the wire. I don't know abt satisfying the Disappointment Cleaver lk, either, and i was a little disappointed not to see "cleaver" in the index of Freedom of the Hills. I think i've got nothing to add w/o doing more serious research than i care to for now. --Jerzy(t) 05:44, 2004 Oct 19 (UTC)

7 peaks in the US named "Brown Peak"[edit]

What shall we do with this multiplicity? Shall we discuss at Talk:Brown Peak (California) ? -- hike395 05:13, 27 Oct 2004 (UTC)

Transferred discussion to Wikipedia:WikiProject Mountains/General. RedWolf 05:58, Oct 27, 2004 (UTC)

Hi - A few weeks ago you updated this category to say "deprecated". Why deprecate rather than delete (via WP:CFD)? -- Rick Block 23:28, 18 Nov 2004 (UTC)

I had just finished moving everything to Category:Macintosh computers and was just giving it some time for the "dust to settle". If you want to list it for deletion now, I don't have a problem with it. RedWolf 01:04, Nov 19, 2004 (UTC)

The Brits, or - The English are Coming![edit]

O Dear, I've just had a look at the discussion page for 'British' - what a tangle. I take it you were originally referring to the article on John Sullivan? His article describes him as a writer of BRITISH sitcoms, therefore - British. Remember - all the English are British, not all British are English (especially not those from Northern Ireland). 'The United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland' refers. Peter W 12:54, 26 Nov 2004 (UTC)

NPOV de-tagged[edit]

Sorry about the goof-up at Made in Heaven; I completely forgot to list my reasoning. I've compared the current article with the way it looked when I tagged it 3 months ago, and the issues I had with NPOV have already been fixed. Thanks for jogging my memory. Joyous 22:45, Nov 26, 2004 (UTC)

Disambiguation[edit]

Sorry Red, you'll have to explain in more detail. I thought I was doing them OK Peter W 12:29, 26 Nov 2004 (UTC)

I have added an example to your talk page. RedWolf 04:45, Dec 1, 2004 (UTC)

Trying to make a US Mountain Infobox template[edit]

.. at Template:Infobox US Mountains, but I am having absolutely no luck calling the template (test page at User talk:Hike395/Infobox US Mountains). It's quite late for me (local time), I'm probably missing something obvious. If you have a minute, could you check it? Thanks!! -- hike395 07:40, 30 Nov 2004 (UTC)

The last time I played with templates several months back, the only way I could get them to work properly is to either use a lot of "helper" templates to complete it, or change from wiki table syntax to HTML table syntax. Neither is ideal. Of the two evils, the latter is better IMHO. The template designers made a very poor decision in their choice of parameter delimiters (i.e. vertical bar) RedWolf 04:31, Dec 1, 2004 (UTC)
In August 2004, they fixed the "no vertical bar in template parameters" problem. I still can't seem to make it work, though. -- hike395 04:37, 1 Dec 2004 (UTC)

Hi, again. I've proposed a (scaled back) version of a templatized US Mountain infobox at Wikipedia:WikiProject Mountains/General#Template to cover part of infobox.. What do you think? Suggestions & feedback are welcome. -- hike395

A possibly even better idea at Wikipedia:WikiProject_Mountains/General#Template_to_cover_part_of_infobox. Any comments or ideas? -- hike395

Article Licensing[edit]

Hi, I've started a drive to get users to multi-license all of their contributions that they've made to either (1) all U.S. state, county, and city articles or (2) all articles, using the Creative Commons Attribution-Share Alike (CC-by-sa) v1.0 and v2.0 Licenses or into the public domain if they prefer. The CC-by-sa license is a true free documentation license that is similar to Wikipedia's license, the GFDL, but it allows other projects, such as WikiTravel, to use our articles. Since you are among the top 1000 Wikipedians by edits, I was wondering if you would be willing to multi-license all of your contributions or at minimum those on the geographic articles. Over 90% of people asked have agreed. For More Information:

To allow us to track those users who muli-license their contributions, many users copy and paste the "DualLicenseWithCC-BySA-Dual" template into their user page, but there are other options at Template messages/User namespace. The following examples could also copied and pasted into your user page:

Option 1
I agree to multi-license all my contributions, with the exception of my user pages, as described below:
DualLicenseWithCC-BySA-Dual

OR

Option 2
I agree to multi-license all my contributions to any U.S. state, county, or city article as described below:
DualLicenseWithCC-BySA-Dual

Or if you wanted to place your work into the public domain, you could replace "DualLicenseWithCC-BySA-Dual" with "MultiLicensePD". If you only prefer using the GFDL, I would like to know that too. Please let me know what you think at my talk page. It's important to know either way so no one keeps asking. The Humungous Image Tagging Project[edit]

Hi. You've helped with the Wikipedia:WikiProject Wiki Syntax, so I thought it worth alerting you to the latest and greatest of Wikipedia fixing project, User:Yann/Untagged Images, which is seeking to put copyright tags on all of the untagged images. There are probably, oh, thirty thousand or so to do (he said, reaching into the air for a large figure). But hey: they're images ... you'll get to see lots of random pretty pictures. That must be better than looking for at at and the the, non? You know you'll love it. best wishes --Tagishsimon (talk)

Yes, I have had the page bookmarked for a while. I usually check images on pages I haven't seen before and tag them that way. Occasionally I look at the list and check a few but it's too tedious to stay with it for any stretch of time. RedWolf 05:05, Dec 16, 2004 (UTC)

Thanks for uploading these images:

I notice they currently don't have an image copyright tag. Could you add one to let us know their copyright status? (You can use gfdl if you release them under the GFDL, or fairuse if you claim fair use, etc.) Thanks, Kbh3rd 04:11, 16 Dec 2004 (UTC)

Forgot about those ones. I have put them under GFDL. RedWolf 05:02, Dec 16, 2004 (UTC)

More unverified images[edit]

Hi Redwolf - thanks for the note; both are images which were incorrectly titled so I'd re-uploaded with the correct name. Image:Comm broom.jpg is an USDA photo, so I've tagged it as such; Image:Commonbroom.jpg never had a tag, you'll have to check with User:Dmsar who uploaded it under the incorrect name Image:Scotchbroom.jpg (this one can of course be deleted as a duplicate) - MPF 00:09, 24 Dec 2004 (UTC)

Okay, I have speedily deleted Scotchbroom.jpg as a duplicate. RedWolf 00:03, Jan 3, 2005 (UTC)

Sort-of verified[edit]

Well, I did mention it was a Unicode glyph... but I think then it is copyrighted under the authors of the font (please confirm this). I am not so sure about usage issues with fonts... Dysprosia 00:19, 27 Dec 2004 (UTC)

English on user page[edit]

Hi, just writing to let you know that my user page is accurate--the work I did was in fact to the disambiguation page English (namely, cleaning links to it). I'd have no problem removing the mention, if there's some reason not to have links to English. Best, Meelar (talk) 21:41, Dec 27, 2004 (UTC)

Done. –– Constafrequent (talk page) 00:25, 28 Dec 2004 (UTC)

Hello[edit]

Howdy! thanks for adding Stanhope, England to the disambig page, maybe you would consider starting an article? Happy New Year to you! Pedant 18:01, 2004 Dec 28 (UTC)

Hi. No, I do not know anything about it other than it was linked to from some articles on England. RedWolf 00:04, Jan 3, 2005 (UTC)

Van Halen:Heavy Metal[edit]

I'm not sure why I chose heavy metal instead of hard rock. All Music Guide lists them as both. After thinking about it, I agree that hard rock would be a more appropriate classification. I will make the changes. DCEdwards1966 04:51, Dec 29, 2004 (UTC)

Re: Image:Vancouver_Waterfront.jpg[edit]

Oh. So I have to cite a source every time I upload a copyrighted image and claim fair use on it, eh? Sorry, I did not know that. Unfortunately, that is the only way I know how to get a decent representative image of the City of Vancouver, because I can't just go there any time to take my own photos of the city. Denelson83 08:03, 30 Dec 2004 (UTC)

If you read the copyright information on Wikipedia, you will find that if you declare fair use of an image, you still need to provide a source and give a reason for fair use. Some exceptions are album and book covers which have their own specific image copyright tags. Since it appears to be a copyrighted photograph that you do not own, it would be best for you to state sources. I would like to add photographs to a lot of mountain articles but I can't simply take a copy of a photograph on another website and simply put it on Wikipedia under fair use. If you are not willing to provide a source for Image:Vancouver_waterfront.jpg, I may have to list it on Wikipedia:Copyright problems because I don't believe this photograph falls under fair use. RedWolf 08:17, Dec 30, 2004 (UTC)
Fine. I hunted down the source page of that image and acknowledged it. Denelson83 08:24, 30 Dec 2004 (UTC)
