Commentator (3 votes in 1 week)[edit]

Nominated October 10; needs 5 votes by October 17 (minimum 5 votes per week)

  3. PlasmaDragon 23:16, 11 Oct 2004 (UTC)

Comments:

  • Lots could be added to this, including the history of commentating (after-the-fact in newspapers and live on radio, TV and now the Internet), how it's done (especially when there are more than one commentators) and famous quotes (not just gaffes). violet/riga (t) 09:22, 10 Oct 2004 (UTC)

Voter education (4 votes in 1 week)[edit]

  3. Jpittman 19:09, 11 Oct 2004 (UTC)
  4. Cordell Walker 03:48, 18 Oct 2004 (UTC)

Comments:

  • Information on how voters do or can educate themselves before elections. Could include info on debates and forums and how the news media and other organizations help or hinder voter education. Timely in the USA. Maurreen 22:00, 10 Oct 2004 (UTC)
  • I'm concerned that "the USA" would be the primary focus of this article. Why not write a stub for now? Shorne 00:01, 11 Oct 2004 (UTC)
I understand your concern, but I don't see how writing a stub could help make it less U.S.-centric. Maurreen 07:48, 11 Oct 2004 (UTC)
I agree with Maurreen. But I think that this will possibly be an excellent article, and there are definitely other people from other countries who have lived abroad etc who could help here. Also, I think that there might be a way of generalizing this so that it is useful to everyone, and yet is not useless. Great idea!--Jpittman 19:09, 11 Oct 2004 (UTC)
Want to learn a technique to increase voter participation? Look at Brazil. Voting is mandatory. People are required to take part in the idiotic ritual of choosing between Siamese twins like Bush and Kerry. Shorne 20:36, 11 Oct 2004 (UTC)
Personally, I don't understand why "it might be U.S.-centric" is even relevant to whether or not it should be an article. But I still don't like it as a collaboration candidate. [[User:Aranel|Aranel ("Sarah")]] 01:49, 12 Oct 2004 (UTC)

Comments:

  • A nuclear protest song that was translated into English. It could use some more information. Lint Roll 02:00, 4 Oct 2004 (UTC)
    • For what it's worth, you have my support. I think the song should have some history attatched to it. -Litefantastic 14:52, 4 Oct 2004 (UTC)
    • Seems a bit obscure for COTW. [[User:Aranel|Aranel ("Sarah")]] 00:38, 7 Oct 2004 (UTC)
  • I remember this song. I always thought that Nena was some kind of weird activist (thinking that a government can actually mistake red balloons as some kind of enemy threat?!). Anyways, I always thought "Rock Me Amadeus", "Puttin' On The Ritz", and all those other U.S. 80's songs were cheesy. The only real decent 80's song was "867-5309", that one actually got people to do something. Albeit, it was crank calls rather than protesting nuclear weapons. TrollQueen 06:49, 7 Oct 2004 (UTC)

    • Should a COTW candidate being uncontroversial necessarily be a plus point? I feel controversial articles such as Holodomor (below, at time of writing) would greatly benefit from the large pool of contributors that COTW nomination and selection would bring. • This is a different kind of project; the article is just a list, that points to all the articles we have in this huge topic. This COTW should aim to make a featured article in best Summary style available. Compare to History of Europe, History of Africa. ✏ Sverdrup 15:09, 21 Sep 2004 (UTC)
  • Actually this would need a bit more than just summary of the articles currently indexed. There's a hole where the history of Central Asia should be, for one thing. That area may be a backwater now, but you can't tell the story of Asia without a good discussion of the steppe nomads (Huns, Sarmatians, Mongols, etc.) Isomorphic 15:04, 22 Sep 2004 (UTC)
  • It seems like this topic doesn't have enough unity to make a good article. Maurreen 23:38, 3 Oct 2004 (UTC)
  • I agree with Maurreen. This is a terribly broad topic, only a bit narrower than History of the world. Shorne 03:47, 7 Oct 2004 (UTC)
    • But still, that is an article. History of Asia is currently just a list. ✏ Sverdrup 15:44, 7 Oct 2004 (UTC)
    • A good summary on a topic this big is hard to write, but that doesn't mean it wouldn't be useful. Broad overviews are useful for providing context, and for finding holes in the current coverage. Not only that, but this is the sort of topic that collaborative editing is perfect for: the information is widely available, but needs lots of processing to make it into a good article. Isomorphic 17:41, 13 Oct 2004 (UTC)
    • I think a super-brief overview would be good, but I think that expanding History of East Asia, or other smaller regions, would a better investment of the effort. I brought up East Asia as an example because of the intricate cultural exchanges and influences (and many wars), all of which in turn allow one to write a cohesive history of that particular region. Bringing up the steppe nomads would be appropriate in an article titled History of Central Asia, or History of West Asia, for example. In addition, many cultures have sprung in different parts of Asia, and for long periods of time have nothing or little to do with each other. One can discuss the Indus valley civilization and history almost independently of the history of the east asian civilizations. Julius.kusuma 23:00, 17 Oct 2004 (UTC)
  • I think a series of Asian regional histories would probably be a better investment of resources, if possible. A general History of Asia is a massive topic, which may well be utterly impossible to cover adequately in a single article. Bearcat 04:35, 23 Oct 2004 (UTC)

  • I agree. The topic would seem more germaine to the collapse of colonialism and possibly the Soviet empire. Contemporary commentary is probably too myopic. Perhaps there should be a separate, more polemic topic titled "Anti-US-imperialism"? RJH 18:21, 12 Oct 2004 (UTC)

  • A small yet important conflict, with a truly dinky article. (However, the list of major and minor players is great, and reflects well the "You've gotta have a scorecard to keep up with it" nature of the conflict.) -- Penta 07:50, 9 Oct 2004 (UTC)
