I have a PhD in statistics and I have NEVER seen D(X) used to denote the variance of a random variable X. Perhaps in some specialized areas of statistics or probability theory notations differ from what is generally known; what is generally known certainly does not include the D(X) notation that you put in the article titled variance. Russian typography[edit]

...I suggest that you read about Russian typography first (there is an article in Russian Wikipedia with that name. ...

Thanks a lot for your note. I did a lot of electronic publishing in English, but never took time to read a Russian typography manual online. Great news it's on ru:WP, I'll take a look. BACbKA 07:01, 16 Dec 2004 (UTC)
I tried to find an article with "типография" there and failed. Can you please give a link to the manual of style? Also, it's probably a good idea to interwiki it with Wikipedia:Manual_of_style so that others don't get puzzled. BACbKA 22:37, 21 Dec 2004 (UTC)

Parameter estimation[edit]

I see you added some parameter estimation material to lognormal distribution. There are a lot of other probability distribution articles that need a parameter estimation section. I am trying to do that, but any help you could provide would be welcome. PAR 14:28, 15 May 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Don't count on me seriously. I'm just a student finishing his final university paper who decided to put results of his computations to the Wikipedia ;) -- Paul Pogonyshev 15:19, 15 May 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Could you check the gamma distribution page? There is a question about your generator entry. Look for the "where x is ????" in the "Generating gamma random variables" section. PAR 22:41, 13 July 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Done. It was a `I forgot this one mistake' when I converted notations. --Paul Pogonyshev 14:17, 15 July 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Notification: changes to "Mark my edits as minor by default" preference[edit]

Hello there. This is an automated message to tell you about the gradual phasing out of the preference entitled "Mark all edits minor by default", which you currently have (or very recently had) enabled.

On 13 March 2011, this preference was hidden from the user preferences screen as part of efforts to prevent its accidental misuse (consensus discussion). This had the effect of locking users in to their existing preference, which, in your case, was true. To complete the process, your preference will automatically be changed to false in the next few days. This does not require any intervention on your part and you will still be able to manually mark your edits as being 'minor'. The only thing that's changed is that you will no longer have them marked as minor by default.

For established users such as yourself there is a workaround available involving custom JavaScript. If you are familiar with the contents of WP:MINOR, and believe that it is still beneficial to the encyclopedia to have all your edits marked as such by default, then this discussion will give you the details you need to continue with this functionality indefinitely. If you have any problems, feel free to drop me a note.

Thank you for your understanding and happy editing :) Editing on behalf of User:Jarry1250, LivingBot (talk) 18:56, 14 March 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Hi,
You appear to be eligible to vote in the current Arbitration Committee election. The Arbitration Committee is the panel of editors responsible for conducting the Wikipedia arbitration process. It has the authority to enact binding solutions for disputes between editors, primarily related to serious behavioural issues that the community has been unable to resolve. This includes the ability to impose site bans, topic bans, editing restrictions, and other measures needed to maintain our editing environment. The arbitration policy describes the Committee's roles and responsibilities in greater detail. If you wish to participate, you are welcome to review the candidates' statements and submit your choices on the voting page.
