Niederschlesien

Why do you keep changing Niederschlesien to northwest of Poland if it is located in the southwest of Poland? Pommern is located in the northwest for that matter.

Ethnic German

I just gave Ethnic German a huge reworking. I'd appreciate it if you'd look it over, since you are neutral, seem to be informed on these Eastern European topics, and maybe know better how to categorize it and link it to other articles. I'm especially shaky on the Czechia / Poland / Baltic stuff like major settlements, group names, which articles are out there, and Hanseatic and Prussian history, because it's the farthest from Danube Swabian issues. Re: admin - you?

I'm afraid I grew too much cynical over the time. Long ago I attempted RfA (Wikipedia:Requests for adminship/Pavel Vozenilek). I got definitely discouraged by result of a RfA proposed by me (User:Rl, take a look, really interesting).

The current system is leaned toward relatively new people which are not much known and didn't get yet into anything controversial. Otherwise the person gets thoroughly besmirched by the all-present trolls (see current RfA on A. Bakharev). (Note aside: IMO current RfA process is defunct since it is people who are not afraid to touch the trolls who keep the ship still afloat.)

Woudn't you like to be an admin? If there are no warriors gnashing their teeths when seeing your name you have fair chance to pass through (and keep your self-esteem intact). That the area of your activity has no admins yet is plus. Pavel Vozenilek 13:28, 17 February 2006 (UTC)

Thanks for the info. I had a problem once before when I wanted to do a name change (move) but the name was already in existence. I had noticed that the history and talk doesn't move with a cut and paste, so I put a link on the talk page, but obviously that isn't ideal. I'll follow your advice in future. Cheers! Stubs under new article announcement on Portal:Germany

Hi Olessi. I saw that you listed two stubs you created under the new article announcement on the Portal. I don't believe we want to list stubs as new articles. That's why I removed the two stubs from the announcements. But it would be great if you could really translate the German articles. That would simply be wonderful. Stubs usually don't give much information and creating them just so we can say the page exists in the en-wiki doesn't help much. It would be better to leave the links red. Don't forget that stubs also take away the chance for our articles to be picked for DYKs on the main page when they are finally completed because they no longer qualify as "new" articles. But we'd love to have your contributions of full translations advertised on the Portal and perhaps picked for DYKs both on the Portal and the Main Page. Help needed

Hi, I wonder if you could take a look at Talk:Erika Steinbach, where among other things one of the editors explains that Polish territory was not occupied by Nazi Germany during WW2 but was "integrated" into Germany instead. Kreise: Districts or Counties

Please

Don't remove information on treatement of Poles by Germany in 1939-1945 from articles in the future in such drastic way as you did in Warmia article. I see no reason why the information on that particular part of history should be removed from the article while other historic sections remain. --Molobo 02:06, 14 March 2006 (UTC)

I see no reason why information about German atrocities against Poles should be removed from main page on Warmia while other parts of its history should remain visible on the main page. Why should be this information treated differently and moved to shall we say "some closet" away from main history of Warmia ? Especially as the article is not too big. Don't remove in future information about Nazi atrocities from any other article before engaging in talk-for example from history of Poznań, Gdańsk, Warsaw, Zamość etc. --Molobo 13:14, 14 March 2006 (UTC)

Cats

Hi there. Category:Cities and towns in Kaliningrad Oblast is already a subcat of Category:Kaliningrad Oblast. The only reason the urban and rural settlements are placed directly to Category:Kaliningrad Oblast is because there are still too few articles to justify creating Category:Urban settlements in Kaliningrad Oblast and Category:Rural settlements in Kaliningrad Oblast. Actually, Category:Cities and towns in Kaliningrad Oblast is here to stay permanently. It was created as a part of the bigger Category:Cities and towns in Russia project, when the latter cat grew to over 500 entries, and it was requested that subcats be created. Cities and towns in Kaliningrad Oblast is just one of those cats.

As for the style I introduced, it was actually meant as a quick fix so it would be possible to have the audio link but still retain {{lang-ru}}. I am not claiming it to be the final solution, and it can probably be improved somehow. You did, however, implement it exactly the same way I would have in the articles you asked me to check. The only thing is that I would separate different language versions with a semicolon instead of a comma, but again, I don't think there is a rule to that effect.—Ëzhiki (ërinacëus amurënsis) 13:22, 31 March 2006 (UTC)

Your ogg files

That's a VERY nice job, you did there. A couple of very minor comments (and I wouldn't redo anything for it): (1) You seem to roll the "R"s if they either appear in the beginning of a word or after another consonant (specifically B, P, F and T's. You also rolled it in Marienburg and Thorn. I've never heard a German in regular conversation do that (except if they're from Bavaria and even there they only really do it emphasize).  :) Apart from that I only noticed that you spoke Osterode with an open O in the beginning. It should be a closed O like is Ostern, not like Osten; and Frauenburg sounds like Frauenborg. Like I said, the way you pronounced them is perfectly acceptable. These are just some things to consider as you go on. Oh, and I changed the German word for Schlesien from Silesia.  ;-) Hope this helps. --Mmounties (Talk) 23:27, 2 April 2006 (UTC)

Ostpreußen should have an open O (in case I mess up which are open and closed, it should sound like Offenburg or Osten). My best guess is that Lyck should be pronounced "Lück" but I've never heard anyone speak of the place, so I may be wrong there. Regarding the "R"s, I believe you can hear them sometimes pronounced that way on stage or even on TV if the speaker wants to make sure the audience gets them (I suppose they carry better than the standard German "R"). Ogg formatting

Well, help and info links do not concern me as much as the loss of the lang-ru template. Perhaps we could abbreviate the word "pronunciation" or replace it with something shorter? The only reason why I even bothered to reformat the intro in the first place was to retain both lang-ru and the audio. Your new version looks and reads better, there is no doubt about that, but it loses {{lang-ru}}. I see that as an unacceptable loss. I'll try to tweak the intro a bit more to combine the best of both versions, but I can't promise I'll be successful. Do you have any ideas as to how both templates can be retained without making the intro look ugly? If all else fails, perhaps it would be better to make a small infobox just for audio. I am sorry, I didn't realize you were not aware of the {{lang-ru}} template's details; I should have explained. You are right that there is no visual difference. The template, however, also adds metadata, marking the text as written in the Russian language (by means of the HTML span tags), which, among other things, is important for indexing the text by the search engines. See template talk:lang-ru and template talk:lang-uk for more information on that. I realize, of course, that having audio is more important than having metadata, but since the two templates are not mutually exclusive, I'd rather that we find a way of combining them somehow.—Ëzhiki (ërinacëus amurënsis) • (yo?); 20:00, 21 April 2006 (UTC)

OK, I drafted the {{Audio-ru}} template, which is for Russian only. To use it, type:

{{Audio-ru|Правдинск|RU-Pravdinsk.ogg}}

which produces:

Russian: Правдинск​ⓘ

To make a similar template for any other language, just copy the template source to an appropriate place and replace of instances of "Russian" with the name of the language you need (e.g., "German"), and all instances of "ru" with that language's code (e.g., "de"). You are welcome. The European theatre of the S.Y.W. - like most other 18th-century conflicts in which English speakers didn't take part - are seriously neglected in WP. In fact, the parent article about the Seven Years' War should be rewritten thoroughly. Iser redirects to Wolfgang Iser, although I'm not sure why; ISER brings up more Iser Google hits than Wolfgang Iser, although the word "Iser" seems sufficiently uncommon to have a primary meaning. Towns in Poland

Hi Olessi. I am aware that letters with diacritics are placed at the end of the alphabet, but that seems preferable to mixing letters. Is this a problem? Jim Gardner/Dave Roberts (reporter)

Hi. I don't think they are notable enough outside their own area to be included in Wikipedia, so I have started the deletion process. It is better to have them on the big list (WPVI-TV Personalities) with the rest of the non-notable people from their televison station. There is one exception I see from the various lists of the Philadelphia television station people and that is Larry Mendte, who was the host of Access Hollywood, so that would make him notable. Jim Gardner and Dave Roberts haven't done anything like that, given their bios (note: I write this from suburban Cleveland), so they really shouldn't be included. Nigel Wick 19:15, 6 June 2006 (UTC)

Prussian Homage

Hi Olessi, I think adding a section called "Treaty of Kraków" to the article is the way to go, and then we might as well add categories Polish treaties and German treaties (or, ideally, create a new cat called Treaties of the Teutonic Knights, a subcat of German treaties). As for the February date, my gut feeling is that it's wrong. Your reading of the pl wp is correct, and here are two more sources: Davies and another. As for the 9 April date, I suppose we could mention both dates with footnotes pointing to each of the sources. Appleseed (Talk) 00:25, 8 June 2006 (UTC)

Nice work on the Gollub War article. There are a number of other wars between the Knights and KoP (as well as HRE and KoP) that need articles, so if you're interested, perhaps we can work on them. Redirects

I'm a big fan of redirects, especially foreign language ones. Could you tag the ones you create with a redirect template as found on WP:R? My favorites are {{R from alternate language}}, {{R from title without diacritics}} and {{R from misspelling}}. Succession Boxes

A while ago, a number of members prominant in creating succession boxes agreed on the format displayed on the Template:s-start/Instructions page. It is not that we discourage images but they take up more space and we believe that a succession box should be concise. If you want to use your images, it would be better if you used another template for that and placed it elsewhere on the page. The succession boxes are really only for dynastic/succession information and images just clutter it up and make it bulky. Sorry, don't take it as a personal offense; a number of us have also attempted similar things but ultimately they are all getting replaced by one of the members of the group if not by someone else first. Regarding alternative language versions of the succession template, I do not claim any authority there so that is up to you. Thanks!

Battle of the Ice

Hi Olessi,

I looked into this and there is no concrete proof that von Malberg took a part in the battle. The official version has it that only von Malberg and a handful of knights were able to escape death, but some historians seem to disagree with this version. They claim that Grand Master von Malberg has probably never visited Livonia in his lifetime and it was someone else leading the Teutonic Army. That's all I was able to find out. Norum 16.06.2006

Livonian Brothers of the Sword

I have realized you also asked me for the translation of Zakon kawalerów mieczowych. It really means the same thing, exceptt if you wanted to translate it literally, it would be more like "Order of the Brothers of the Sword". The word "Livonia" is not used in the Polish version of the Order.
