October 30: Mischief Night

Monument to the Gozo luzzu disaster

1938 – CBS Radio broadcast the radio drama The War of the Worlds, causing panic among some listeners who believed that an actual Martian invasion was in progress.
1948 – A luzzu fishing boat overloaded with passengers capsized and sank in the Gozo Channel off Qala, Gozo, Malta, killing 23 of the 27 people on board (monument pictured).
1991 – The Madrid Conference, an attempt by the international community to revive the Israeli–Palestinian peace process through negotiations, convened.
1993 – The Troubles: Three members of the Ulster Defence Association opened fire in a crowded pub during a Halloween party, killing eight people and wounding nineteen others.
2002 – Warren Zevon made his last public appearance on the Late Show with David Letterman, giving the advice to "enjoy every sandwich".

War of the Worlds panic[edit]

Did War of the Worlds really cause "nationwide panic"? I understand those stories are mostly exaggerated at best [1] [2]. --Calieber 15:25, Oct 30, 2003 (UTC)

This nonsense is propagated every single year on Wikipedia and nobody does anything about it. The nonsense version invariably makes it to the front page claiming it caused widespread chaos or something. It certainly shouldn't be listed until it actually happens, future events are explicitly prohibited here. After the event has occurred (preferably long after, it would take a while for an event like this to establish notability) it can be included if it satisfies the notability guidelines at WP:DOY. The birth of Kristina Wagner is listed as being 1963 here and on www.famousbirthdays.com, while it is listed as being 1962 in other pages in Wikipedia such as Kristina Wagner and IMDB.com.
