Having written the original text (which took some time), I have now revised it with heavy editing to give the article more of a crisp read while retaining essential elements necessary to understand the historical importance of this booklet. MPLX/MH 02:24, 12 Dec 2004 (UTC)

Notability[edit]

I don't see anything that explains why this is any more notable than other booklets that espoused a religious message. What makes this special and worthy of a Wikipedia article? 24.6.65.83 00:54, 8 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]

This booklet was a major recruiting tool for the Worldwide Church of God under Herbert W. Armstrong. Many were terrified by it, and convinced they had to join Armstrong's religion to survive the coming world catastrophe. The booklet is also highly collectable, as it contains drawings by the famous comic book artist Basil Wolverton, who was a Worldwide Church of God pastor. It became a major embarrassment too, as it became clear in 1972 the Great Tribulation wasn't coming, and the Worldwide Church of God had to bury it and to rewrite all the publications that referred to it. I lived during that time. Armstrong's radio programs nearly always mentioned '1975 in Prophecy!' and offered it as a freebie to anyone who requested it. MaynardClark (talk) 18:13, 24 February 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Proposed correction based on reviewing the book[edit]

While the booklet may not "directly" mention 1975 in relation to Bible prophecy, several quotes from the booklet show there was a time element attached:

PAGE 3: “What man is bringing on the world is.... such catastrophic and terrifying destruction that human life will be erased from the earth in 25 years unless God Almighty intervenes!” Since the book was written in 1956 (based on this article; my copy has no publication date), that indicates the author expected God to intervene with Jesus Christ's return by 1981.

PAGE 10: “....United States Assistant Weather Chief I.R. Tannahill warns us unofficially to really fear ‘the big drought of 1975.’ But the indications of prophecy are that this drought will be even more devastating than he foresees, and that it will strike sooner than 1975 – probably between 1965 and 1972!” While this statement is hedged with words such as "indications" and "probably," it followed the 1975 "deadline" view. (The Wikipedia article on "Drought in the United States" shows it was incorrect.) 98.88.71.204 (talk) 14:57, 7 July 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Misunderstanding of The Rapture[edit]

The article reads:

"What Armstrong promised was not a Christian evangelical rapture of spirit beings, but a rescue of human beings living in a physical world, into which Jesus would return as world dictator, for the good of humanity."
  • The pre-tribulation Evangelical view of The Rapture HAS been of a literal, physical, bodily 'catching up' prior to the Great Tribulation. The article should be corrected.MaynardClark (talk) 17:00, 23 December 2015 (UTC)[reply]
