Nick Mason[edit]

Idea: change title of page to something like "Famous persons associated with Birmingham"? That would cure the inconsistency between the page title - "...residents..." - and those like Nick Mason who were never, or not for long, residents. RayGirvan 00:46, 2 Jun 2005 (UTC)

The section already says "Born in Birmingham", Nick Mason WAS born in Birmingham, so what Andy Mabbett is objecting to exactly I havn't a clue. Perhaps he would like to explain. G-Man 22:02, 2 Jun 2005 (UTC)

The problem is that there's slippage between "born in Birmingham" (true) and "belonging to Birmingham", "a Birmingham musician", "a talent that can perpetually be cited as a product of Birmingham" (untrue). RayGirvan 22:38, 2 Jun 2005 (UTC)

That is why I put the explanitory footnote there, in an attempt to keep Andy happy. Still it is a fact that he was born there, to remove him is to remove valid factual information and is quite wrong. G-Man 22:45, 2 Jun 2005 (UTC)

Out of interest, this Camden New Journal interview confirms that "Nick was brought up in Hampstead Garden Suburb, then Hampstead". I'd love to know what twerp started the factoid, which is all over the Web, that the Hampstead address "Downshire Hill" was a district of Birmingham called the Downshire Hills. That no doubt is reinforcing the idea that he has some long-standing Birmingham origin. RayGirvan 02:35, 17 Jun 2005 (UTC)

That threw me also, I even resorted to my A-Z to see if there was such a place in Brum? How long did he spend living in Birmingham before being taken away though, I have asked this before and cannot find an answer anywhere on the net, the only proof we have that he was taken away immediately after Birth is only by the word of Andy Mabbett who seem sto be pushing his own agenda here as G-man can confirm. Bruce Chatwin[edit]

User:Pigsonthewing removed Bruce Chatwin from the list as it makes no reference to B'ham in the Wikipedia article. This quotes his birthplace as Sheffield. Fair enough. However, info on the web is mixed. Reviews of Nicholas Shakespeare's biography here and here state Chatwin was born in Birmingham, here it states Sheffield. All agree he was from a middle-class Birmingham family and that he spent some of his childhood here. The Salon.com review quotes Nicholas Shakespeare: - For Bruce, Birmingham was always a place to leave.

Does anyone have any definitive info on either his place of birth or how long he spent in Birmingham? Also posted query at Talk:Bruce Chatwin. Valiantis 13:51, 2 September 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Removed[edit]

I have removed Michael Checkland from the list as I can find no evidence that he was born in Birmingham. I also removed several entries that looked like vanity or joke entries. Someone really should keep an eye on this. Gem 20:54, 22 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Name[edit]

List of residents of Birmingham, England sounds as if it's a directory showing all the names of people who live in the city. List of famous people from Birmingham also is a bad title as how can we regard what is "famous" or not? Plus famous is also a weasel word according to the Manual of Style. Why not put this under the title of List of notable residents associated with Birmingham or List of notable people from Birmingham, these sound a lot better. Chess[edit]

I'm pleased to see English Chess Champion,Grandmaster Keith Arkell, on the list.I believe he was born in Edgbaston(and,furthermore,he lived for many years in the Birmingham area.)

Does anyone know whether England's first ever Grandmaster,Anthony Miles,was born in Birmingham? Restructuring[edit]

I think the list has reached a size where just having two sections ("born in" and "associated with") is getting a bit unwieldy
