Temperance Fair?[edit]

Growing up in Newcastle, I was always under the impression that it was more than a coincidence that the Hoppings took place in the same week as the races: I believe it was deliberately started as an alternative to the races. The races were infamously boozy, and I think that the Hoppings was originally a temperance fair with no alcohol at it. (How things have changed...) I have not added this to the article because "that's what I thought when I was little" is not a terribly citable source. But it would be nice if someone could track this down.

Oh yes, and would not "largest travelling (two ls, it's British :)) fair" be more accurate? Again, that's how I heard it described as a child (by contrast with such attractions as Blackpool Fair).

Removed word-for-word[edit]

Sorry to do this, but I have removed the following text from the main article, as it is word for word the same as the "bobjude" URL external link currently at the bottom of the article:

"the name Hoppings originates from the dances that the show girls used to do to entertain the visitors. (Possibly also of US origin reference a dance being known as the Hop)."
