Media rights[edit]

I have started a media rights section. It needs more information, especially on situation between the start of the league and the ITV Digital contract. Jamie Mercer 12:34, 6 November 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Did you all know that live Football League matches continued on ITV after the Premier League moved over to Sky from the 1992–93 season. The ITV franchised regions would have their own live sports programme showing a live match from their region. The games would normally kick-off Sundays at 3pm. The Football League 89-90, 90-91, 91-92[edit]

On the First Division league table for the three seasons, 1989-90, 1990-91, 1991-92, it looks like a bitter old englishman have written: "English teams were still affected by the 1985 UEFA ban, imposed upon the Heysel Disaster, in that they had to earn back additional places in the UEFA Cup. The teams that missed out on this competition due to UEFA regulations are marked here with grey." It is correct that because of the 1985 UEFA ban, England was the lowest ranked nation on the Country Ranking (based on the clubs achievements last 5 years) and had to earn back additional places in the UEFA cup, but to say that "English teams were still affected by the 1985 UEFA ban" is in my opinion wrong and should be removed or replaced.. Mentoz86 (talk) 10:05, 16 August 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Clearly they were affected, as you admit that the ban resulted in them being ranked bottom. The statement, however, needs a source. Mooretwin (talk) 10:18, 16 August 2011 (UTC)[reply]
What about: "Because of the 1985 UEFA ban, no English clubs played european matches between the 1985/86 and 1989/90 season, and England was therefore ranked as 25th for the 1990/91-season in Europe which gave England only 1 spot in UEFA Cup [1]
The teams that missed out on this competition due to UEFA regulations are marked here with grey."Mentoz86 (talk) 10:55, 16 August 2011 (UTC)[reply]
That's good, although I wouldn't mark the teams missing out in grey (unless there is a source for it). Although we know that the champions, runners-up and cup winners definitely missed out, to include others is to assume that England would continue to have had four UEFA Cup places during this time. While almost certainly this would have been the case, we cannot know it. Mooretwin (talk) 10:58, 16 August 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Football League Champions[edit]

Clearly the champions section has been written by a Manchester United fan (who is probably from Kent). Liverpool should be listed at the top as they won more Football League titles - anything since the disaster in 1992 should not be on this article. Lenzar (talk) 13:58, 26 March 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Davefelmer (talk) 18:05, 30 August 2015 (UTC)No need to take shots at where someone is from (especially since Liverpool fans are stereotyped as Irish, Malaysian or Thai). The football league and premier league are the same division; just under a different name. there is no reason to have liverpool as having the most titles when United have won the top divsion the most.[reply]

The Football League and the Premier League are not "the same division". The clubs that formed the Premier League in 1992 broke away from The Football League. They (as the Premier League) then made arrangements with The Football League to allow for promotion and relegation between the two organisations, parachute payments for relegated clubs and so on. See the ""foundation of the Premier League" section. The breakaway is what allowed the Premier League clubs to retain a greater share of central (mostly pay TV) revenues - if they had stayed within the Football League, they would have had to give revenues to all of the 72 FL clubs, not just those entitled to parachutes. See also this BBC article, or this Guardian article. Jmorrison230582 (talk) 18:13, 30 August 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Associate/Full members[edit]

Hi, I have been looking for information about the previous divide between Associate and Full members e.g. voting rights, dates etc.. Unless I have missed it in another article I think it could usefully be added here. I have looked for some sources but not found anything authoritative. Perhaps someone with access to a suitable reference book could add something please? The Whispering Wind (talk) 21:48, 2 November 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Capitalization of "The"[edit]

In the name of the league, Is it essential to always capitalize "The" when it occurs in the middle of a sentence here? I'm not sure it is. 108.254.160.23 (talk) 19:46, 18 January 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Rebranding to EFL[edit]

The Football League will be rebranded the English Football League, starting at the 2016-17 season. The Guardian article FreekyFreezer »profile »talk »edits 18:58, 12 November 2015 (UTC)[reply]

2016-17 EFL season start and end dates for all divisions were already announced. Regular season will open on 6 August 2016 and will end between 6-7 May 2017.The Football League article Santiago Claudio (talk) 08:37, 29 November 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Loath to bring this up but....[edit]

I loath to bring this issue up but regretfully I feel I need to ask. As the season is (almost) over, when are we going to make the move of this article from it's historic and much loved name to the dreary soulless English Football League? Just allowed ?[edit]

This part "...and is further extended to allow the top Championship clubs to exchange places with the lowest-placed clubs in the Premier League,..." , kind of gives an impression of a possible uncertainty, with the common relegation and promotion system. To be allowed to do something, doesn't always mean that opportunity automatically is used, I think. But to my knowledge has a promoted club never ever (?) declined any promotion. I feel that part could be a bit less dizzy and more spot-on. Boeing720 (talk) 04:31, 9 September 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Trophy[edit]

Was there ever a trophy awarded to the winning club? May be worth mentioning (or state that no such trophy was awarded if not). Grover cleveland (talk) 07:52, 16 July 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Welsh clubs[edit]

There is the sentence ‘ Currently three of the EFL clubs are from Wales – Cardiff City, Swansea City and Newport County’. What about Wrexham? I’m not big on football, but I’m pretty sure they play in the English league. I’m not confident in this. Hence asking the question, not editing the text. 2A02:C7E:549F:9F00:B560:6375:98BA:997A (talk) 18:58, 26 February 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Article issues and classification[edit]

The article not only has a September 2012 unreferenced section tag it has an inline March 2009 "citation needed" tag and a June 2020 "clarification needed" tag. Aside from that there are numerous unsourced sentences, paragraphs, and subsections.
The B-class criteria (#1) states, The article is suitably referenced, with inline citations. It has reliable sources, and any important or controversial material which is likely to be challenged is cited. and #4 states, The article is reasonably well-written.. Reassess the article to C-class as it fails the criteria. Otr500 (talk) 14:32, 2 March 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Goals scored[edit]

There was a period when the Football League used goals scored, rather than goal difference, as a tie-breaker. I think this needs to be added to the article. I'm not sure when this started and ended but it definitely included the 1996-97 season, as per [2]. --Jameboy (talk) 15:54, 22 April 2023 (UTC)[reply]
