Original work?[edit]

Is this original work? It's badly in need of being wikified, but I don't want to bother if it's going to be deleted because of a copyright violation. -- Zoe

Most of the facts were looked up on imdb.com (the rest I knew myself), but the text itself is a completely original piece of writing. -- GuruJ

Zoe - This is all well-known stuff about Eric Bana. GuruJ, it does need Wikifiying. Please look at Wikipedia:Manual of Style. Mintguy

Jewish[edit]

Is Eric Bana Jewish?

I don't believe so. Just German-Croatian gentile. Vulturell 05:07, 7 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Languages spoken[edit]

can he speak german or croatian? —Preceding unsigned comment added by 217.234.167.181 (talk) 22:46, 25 October 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Massive re-write & expansion[edit]

I just re-wrote and expanded the article. Any feedback or additions would be wonderful. Thanks. I have put the article under peer review and would like to make it a good article in the near future. -- Underneath-it-All 05:24, 3 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Hulk 2[edit]

Please do not add this film to Bana's filmography. It has not been confirmed by Bana or by the producers of the film that he will be in it. Thanks. -- Underneath-it-All 15:38, 14 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]

He isn't on it. Fleurbutterfly 19:05, 25 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Citation spot check[edit]

As part of this project, I randomly checked a few footnotes from this article. Results were as follows:

  1. Footnote 4. "For the next two years Bana worked as a stand-up comedian, performing primarily in inner-city pubs, supporting himself by clearing tables at the Castle Hotel."
    • Iffy. From site: "Bana started his career doing stand-up spots at inner-city pubs, clearing tables in between."
      • Related fact, but doesn't mention the Castle Hotel or the duration of time.
  2. Footnote 17. "...but Bana's performance was received with positive reviews, such as one review from the New York Daily News claiming that although the character Bruce Banner is "dull", Bana plays the role "with great conviction"."
    • Iffy. From site: "The best that can be said for newcomer Bana is that he plays a dull character with great conviction."
      • I wouldn't necessarily call that a "positivie review".
  3. Footnote 21(a). "Munich caused controversy and heated debates upon its release from both Israeli and Palestinian political leaders, who argued that the film did not take a political stance and humanized the members of Black September."
    • Problem. From site: "As it transpires, this long, tense thriller has managed to equally enrage members of the Israeli and Arab lobbies in the United States."
      • Nothing here about what arguments the two sides made.
  4. Footnote 25. "At the age of fourteen, Bana wanted to leave school to focus full-time on becoming a motor mechanic, but was convinced by his father to complete school, telling him that he should not make his hobby a job."
    • Checks out. From site: "No actually, I wanted to be a motor mechanic. I wanted to leave school at fourteen and go work on my car, and my dad said, "Don't do that, son." No actually my dad says, [Croatian/Australian accent] "Son, don't do that. Ahh, you should stay at school until your high school is finished, and when you finish, don’t make your hobby your job.""
  5. Footnote 32. "The film was created to raise awareness about an incurable facial cancer which threatens the survival of the species."
    • Problem. From site: "Tasmania's devil, the largest marsupial carnivore left on earth, needs such enthusiastic friends. The alarming spread of an incurable facial cancer threatens the survival of the species, with more than a third of the island's devils wiped out in the past 10 years."
      • Nowhere in this article is it stated that the movie is about, or intended to raise awareness of, the cancer issue.

A number of problems here, mostly of the site-is-related-but-doesn't-directly-support-the-statement variety. Someone needs to go through and clean this up (not only fixing these problems but also going through the footnotes I didn't check). --RobthTalk 21:39, 19 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I have gone through the references and have made some changes. The magazine references were all pretty much checked out, but the websites did have some problems. I have addressed these problems by re-working setences or by removing certain statements all together. -- Underneath-it-All 23:02, 19 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Catholic?[edit]

Does anyone have some kind of first-hand, reputable source that he is Catholic? I think he was married in a Catholic ceremony, but that doesn't necessarily mean that he himself is. Mad Jack 08:08, 31 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I do believe he is Christian, but cannot confirm if he is Catholic or not. Good call on removing the cat. -- Underneath-it-All 14:06, 31 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]

He´s of Croatian descent which means he´s Catholic. —Preceding unsigned comment added by SINJORETOVO (talkcontribs) 08:53, 14 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]

There are also Orthodox and Muslim Croatians as far as I'm aware. Also, just because he is of one ethnicity, in Australia does not neccessarily mean he is of their dominant or even minority religions. Unless there is a reputable source around stating what religion he is, eg. in an interview, wikipedia shouldn't proclaim him to be something.--Senor Freebie (talk) 05:16, 8 August 2009 (UTC)[reply]

I don't know, is Eric Bana a religious man, or is he also catholic now, but I know, the name of his father, is definitely a croatian-catholic name. A big majority of the croatians who emigrated to Australia are very religious, very catholic and mostly conservative people. Similar, to the the Irish emigrants in Australia or USA. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 85.179.231.250 (talk) 14:28, 29 November 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Infobox...[edit]

When I view the article, the infobox looks very small and it is hard to read. I was wondering if it was just my browser or if others see it that way too. If so how can we fix it? -- Underneath-it-All 14:10, 31 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Never mind...I think I have fixed it. -- Underneath-it-All 18:29, 31 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Ref problem[edit]

I found that citation #22 does not work. I tried to renew it, but the website doesn't seem to carry the review anymore, so you'll probably have to delete that sentence.-Dark Kubrick 04:07, 7 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I tried to look for an alternative source, but have yet to find one. Following WPCITE, I have listed when the link went inactive and will keep it in the article because a print source does exist and the article may turn up on the internet archives in the near future. -- Underneath-it-All 14:47, 7 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Also, it seems that citation #32 does not point to the article in question anymore. Might i suggest someone changing the reference to: http://www.ericbana-archives.com/ (which has pics of his car before and after too!) Johnmorrow 06:58, 13 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Out of Bounds[edit]

No mention of his comedy CD 'Out of Bounds'? I believe it was released in '94, the title track had a music video. Anyone have the tracklisting and cover art they can add? Metalion SOS 00:04, 26 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]

It should probably have its own article. -- Underneath-it-All 00:14, 26 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]
There's a track listing and cover art etc here. The cover features Eric Bana's arse. It is an hour-long comedy CD about Australian Rules Football. Judging by the sample I have just heard it is a real laugh riot. -Ashley Pomeroy 22:11, 9 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]
I have created an article for the CD (Out of Bounds (album)). -- Underneath-it-All 00:17, 10 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Alternative Eric Bana image[edit]

I have a lot of images, but have limited time. Here's an alternative Eric Bana - I'll let the people invested in the page decide which they prefer. --David Shankbone 03:01, 3 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Great image! I've added in into the body of the article. -- Underneath-it-All 04:07, 3 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Vandalism[edit]

This page has clearly been vandalized. I reversed some of the false information, but someone else should really take a look at it. 24.235.190.192 (talk) 00:06, 18 June 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Love the Beast[edit]

Since this is one of Bana's most recent films, it seemed odd to me that it isn't in the 2005-present section of the article. Not sure what others think.--Senor Freebie (talk) 05:19, 8 August 2009 (UTC)[reply]

I definitly think it should be there, especialy in filmography table.--Beegees (talk) 02:59, 14 December 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Included Munich Character's Last Name[edit]

On January 30, 2010, I included the last name of Avner, the character Bana portrayed in Munich, Avner Kaufman. Xin Jing (talk) 19:05, 31 January 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Scrubs (Television)[edit]

Eric Bana was also in Scrubs, as Elliot Reed's boyfriend. Should add this to the television page. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 180.159.68.242 (talk) 01:56, 5 January 2012 (UTC)[reply]

"Mimicked his teachers as a means to get out of trouble"?[edit]

It seems unlikely that he "In school, he mimicked his teachers as a means to get out of trouble". To mimic a teacher would be a good way to get into trouble.Royalcourtier (talk) 07:27, 12 June 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Racism?[edit]

"his family had suffered from racist taunts" - Races are: caucasian, asian, african, etc. There is no race like for "Eastern-European immigrants", so I don't really get how he could have got racist taunts. The usage of the word 'racist' is only correct in this sentence, if he was constantly called a 'caucasian', but it's hard to imagine. Black kids encircled him and called him 'ugly white guy' or what? To call someone 'immigrant' or 'Eastern-European' is a bad thing, but definitely not racism, which is about races and not regions. 178.48.177.1 (talk) 07:40, 7 August 2017 (UTC)[reply]

FA in need of review[edit]

This is an FA on a living person that has not been reviewed since its promotion in 2006. There are a number of issues that need to be corrected so the article meets current FA criteria. Examples:

  • The Filmography section is completely unsourced. Either reliably cite all of those roles one by one or move the tables to a new article a la Nicholas Hoult;
  • Several unsourced sentences, like participation in Lucky You and Kath & Kim;
  • Weak sources:
  • the article is severely lacking in commentary about his performances. For instance:
  • His participation in Star Trek, which was a big role in a big franchise, has zero commentary in the article.
  • There's no commentary about his performance in The Time Traveler's Wife, or Hanna, or Lone Survivor, or even Troy (!!!!). Compare this with recent FA promotion Nicholas Hoult, in which each role has some kind of critics' commentary next to it, or even a quote from the actor himself;
  • The 2009-present section is basically "He starred in this", "He starred in that". Also, some of his later roles are missing from the text altogether;
  • The man was in 202 episodes of Something in the Air and there's nothing to be said about it?
  • Here's some commentary of Bana in a scholarly source, the sourcing needs updating to include recent sources.

These are just examples; the article needs work to rise to meet the FA criteria. RetiredDuke (talk) 15:17, 22 November 2020 (UTC)[reply]

RetiredDuke, I agree. I've improved several media FAs in the past, and this is one I'll also tackle. Thanks. LM150 17:12, 23 December 2020 (UTC)[reply]
I've addressed all the issues now. Let's keep this away from FAR ;) Thanks. LM150 13:21, 16 January 2021 (UTC)[reply]
@LM150, great work :). A few more comments: I'm seeing some inconsistently formatted citations (use of urls instead of BBC in some places, the better formatted The New York Times elsewhere). The Sun-Herald is typically not a reliable source. The first sentence of the body has overcitation. Did his charity work stop after 2007? FemkeMilene (talk) 16:44, 2 April 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks! I've fixed the citations and ensured that the "Name of publication" matches what is on the website. I've tweaked everything else and added some detail about his latest charity work that I could find. LM150 18:52, 15 April 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Honestly, I don't know why FAR should be prevented, even with improvements. If improvements have been made to address issues, then great. Well, I'm still unsure whether there are still issues that we overlooked. However, I think a review procedure should be more formal. Also, FAR doesn't always lead to FARC but rather "keep". Furthermore, FAR can be made and recorded to further strengthen the article's FA status. Or, shall I say that FAR can lead to a positive result. Right? --George Ho (talk) 04:53, 30 December 2021 (UTC)[reply]

@RetiredDuke and LM150: have all of the article's concerns been addressed? Would you like to remove the notice at WP:FARGIVEN and mark it as "Satisfactory" at WP:URFA/2020A, or should the notice stand and continue improvements?
@George Ho: I think FAR should be prevented, if possible, because there are lots of featured articles that need improvements, and only a limited amount of time and editors who are willing to help make improvements. If someone is working on an article, then it is typically not necessary to bring it to FAR. Z1720 (talk) 21:27, 5 February 2022 (UTC)[reply]
I wish FAR were inevitable, but as I learned, seriousness of an issue is essential to starting (and prolonging) the FAR. Before bringing the biographical article to FAR, I want to avoid repeating the way I brought Quatermass and the Pit into formal review. But I also have to be more involved in the article as well, which might put me under greater stress than it should. George Ho (talk) 21:43, 5 February 2022 (UTC)[reply]
@RetiredDuke: LM150 has marked this as "satisfactory" at WP:URFA/2020A. Have your concerns been resolved? I also forgot to ping Femkemilene in my original message, so am doing so now. Have your concerns been addressed, too? Z1720 (talk) 20:08, 12 February 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Sorry, I don't have the energy to get back into this. Femke (talk) 20:17, 12 February 2022 (UTC)[reply]
