- 1856 – The first railroad bridge across the Mississippi River opens between Rock Island, Illinois, and Davenport, Iowa.[1]
- 1913 – Richard Beeching, chairman of the British Railways Board 1961-1965, is born (d. 1985).
- 1977 – Indiana Governor Otis R. Bowen signs into law an act forming the Northern Indiana Commuter Transportation District which will take over passenger service from the Chicago South Shore and South Bend Railroad (pictured).[2]
- 2005 – At least 17 people are killed and 78 injured in a collision between a passenger train and stationary goods train in western India.
