meaning of nee[edit]

Nee (more often spelled née, fixed) is used to refer to a woman's maiden name; in general terms, the original name for a person/entity (ex: Atlanta Braves née Milwaukee Braves née Boston Braves). EagleOne 15:59, Jul 9, 2004 (UTC)

More specifically, it's used to indicate the family name a woman was born with: it translates "born", and one is born with only a family name, the prénom (first name) being given later (at christening for Christians). So it's used correctly here ("Peggy Hill, née Platter") whereas ("Peggy Hill, née Margaret Platter") would be a somewhat less standard usage. (And its use for non-people, like sports teams, is probably too figurative to be useful here in an encyclopedia....since sports teams are not born, and aren't generally considered female (the male form is né).-- Nunh-huh 16:09, 9 Jul 2004 (UTC)

My understanding of the word comes from Merriam-Webster's college dictionary, which lists two definitions: "1, used to identify a woman by her maiden family name" and "2, originally or formally called." Dictionary.com lists "formerly known as" under née. To me, those definitions are open-ended enough to apply to any proper noun, provided a change in name took place. Thus, usage in reference to sports teams, corporate entities, and other abstract concepts seems appropriate.EagleOne 02:55, Jul 11, 2004 (UTC)
