X2[edit]

Lining up for space history:
This event known as "X1," as opposed to the "X2" flight tentatively scheduled for next Monday has attracted far lighter advance crowds than June's historic SpaceShipOne flight. But Howard felt he had to be here in Mojave for the start of the prize run.

The X-Prize organization also calls it "X1", MSN had it as the X1 spaceshot in a newsblurb. X-Prize has it as the X1 Flight.

The second spacelaunch is called X2 (no Flight) in this press release.

If you rewatch the 16P spaceflight, you'll note that at the press conference in front of SSO, Peter Diamandis calls it the X1 flight

red stripe on the nose[edit]

A pre-flight image of SpaceShipOne shows a red stripe covering the nose and extending along the underside of the fuselage. What is this? Does it fly with it? (I haven't found an in-flight photo that was clear enough to tell.) If it does fly with it, which flight was the first to have it? Looks like it could be more thermal protection, matching what's on the leading edge of the wing, but I'm dubious about that. 195.167.169.36 08:57, 5 Oct 2004 (UTC)

Vandalism in this article?[edit]

In the "Spectacle" section of this article, the last entry lists:

Rick A Lick, special man

as one of the "distinguished attendees" of this SpaceShipOne flight. This smells like vandalism, agreed? If I receive no repies to the contrary, I will edit this out in a few days.

Hello! This is a note to let the editors of this article know that File:SpaceShipOne Takeoff photo Don Ramey Logan.jpg will be appearing as picture of the day on August 21, 2017. You can view and edit the POTD blurb at Template:POTD/2017-08-21. If this article needs any attention or maintenance, it would be preferable if that could be done before its appearance on the Main Page. — Chris Woodrich (talk) 01:31, 9 August 2017 (UTC)[reply]

SpaceShipOne Flight 17P
SpaceShipOne, an experimental air-launched rocket-powered aircraft with suborbital flight capability at speeds of up to 900 m/s (3,000 ft/s), prior to takeoff during Flight 17P on October 4, 2004. Flown by Brian Binnie, SpaceShipOne reached an altitude of 112 kilometres (70 mi) and a speed of Mach 3.09. After the flight, SpaceShipOne's developers won the $10,000,000 X Prize as the first non-government organization to launch a reusable manned spacecraft into space twice within two weeks. SpaceShipOne was then retired and placed on exhibit at the National Air and Space Museum in Washington, D.C.Photograph: D. Ramey Logan
