Aren't the outer planets those beyond the asteroid belt? Also, the article on the Inner planets state that the Inner planet are those between Sol and the asteroid belt. NASA and many other sources say that all four gas giants are among the Outer planets. Maver1ck 21:15, 8 May 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Article scope[edit]

The scope of this article has changed drastically from its inception 14 years ago. I plan on moving it to a title which better suits its current form: Exploration of the outer planets unless there is an objection. GenQuest "Talk to Me" 14:17, 3 June 2018 (UTC).[reply]

Not an objection but a caveat: After such a move, we still need a place for the definition (link target) of "outer planets". The section in Solar System would do, but it (or the parent Outer Solar System section) might need to be expanded a bit to include the material from the lead here. Not a problem. Noted. GenQuest "Talk to Me" 00:51, 4 June 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Merger proposal[edit]

Concurring with concerns raised by GenQuest, I believe this article's scope no longer aligns with any actual unique description of the outer planets of the solar system as a single topic, but talks more about the exploration of such. I believe it would be best to merge the content of this article with the "Discovery and exploration of the Solar System" article, as it would perfectly accommodate the content and would not make the article too large to constitute a re-split. Any unique description of the outer planets as a single unit can be satisfied by the "Outer Solar System" section of the "Solar System" article. I also believe that "Outer planets" can potentially be a disambiguation page, or a redirect to the aforementioned section in the "Solar System" article as previously suggested by Tbayboy. Like them, though, I'd suggest some light expansion of the section. – PhilipTerryGraham (talk · articles · reviews) 15:42, 20 June 2018 (UTC)[reply]

I agree that this article shouldn't stand alone–the article Outer planets contains not very much other than exploration, so I think the material in it should be put into Discovery and exploration of the Solar System. And I think that "Outer planet" and "Outer planets" should redirect to the outer planets section of the Solar system article. Note the parallel with Inner planets, which redirects to Solar System rather than having an article of its own. Loraof (talk) 23:14, 11 May 2019 (UTC)[reply]
I'll do the above changes in a few days if there are no objections. Loraof (talk) 19:11, 12 May 2019 (UTC)[reply]
Done. Loraof (talk) 20:01, 16 May 2019 (UTC)[reply]
