Copyright status[edit]

I have a call in to the Longhorn Band asking who owns the rights to the lyrics, if the lyrics are copyrighted at all. I highly doubt it. In the future, shouldn't a copyright notice be put up instead of just carelessly deleting things? Scm83x 05:06, 3 Mar 2005 (UTC)

I have been to every UT football game for the past two years, and there are several users here who have been to many more than I have. All of these variations are "acceptable". I've been to games for the past 3 years (missed 1 game) and have been sitting in the student section. I've also made a LOT of basketball games and baseball games and never have I heard any variation other than "ou sucks" or "make 'em eat shit" or "go horns go" —The preceding unsigned comment was added by Corpx (talk • contribs) .

I've attended every football home game and Red River Shootout for the past five seasons — always in the student section. I've heard all the variations listed in the article, in addition to a couple others I don't wish to repeat here.

In an ideal world, every fact in Wikipedia would be referenced to multiple sources meeting WP:RS. I say "multiple" sources because that helps avoid problems with bias in any individual source, sources that may no longer be available, etc. That is why I am a member of Wikipedia:WikiProject Fact and Reference Check. However, as a practical matter, we are far from achieving this. Some things are widely known yet not mentioned in "mainstream" media. We have to use our best judgment. The responses so far are interesting, aren't they? More people are familiar with "OU Sucks", but some people are familiar with than "A&M Sucks" and other variations. I also note that opinions differ about when the lyrics shoudl be changed. Some people think "OU sucks" is reserved for just the RRS or perhaps the last chant of the game leading into the RRS. Others say it is suitable all year long.

That is about what I would expect. This is a grassroots type thing. People yell what they think sounds witty or appropriate to the occasion.

On a related note. I see that someone our footnote claims that we know the name of the Longhorn band member who first substituted "make 'em eat shit". I don't think there is any evidence for that, and it was probably a little bit of vanity someone snuck into the article, so I am taking it out unless someone wants to try to defend it. Judging the consensus on that thread, I'd say that "OU sucks" is widespread. As for "A&M sucks", it looks like it might have been done a long time ago, but not anymore (Maybe now its "Aggy sucks"). As for the other "high profile opponents", nobody except the hellraisers (for a period of 5 years due to probation) seems to have done it. That doesn't match at all what is said there. The comments there show that most people think "OU sucks" is the most common, but they also show that some people are familiar with other variants. Other than the person who was a Hellraiser, nobody else in 3 pages did anything except "OU sucks" and sometimes "A&M sucks"

during the 2005 Big 12 Championship blowout of Colorado, some students began looking ahead to the Rose Bowl by changing these last words to "USC sucks!"

On this very Talk page, there are people, including myself, who have heard other variants. I personally heard "USC sucks!" at the 2005 Big 12 Championship Game. I am not a citable source, unfortunately. Neither is a fan forum on Hornfans. However, if we pair back to only citable sources then we would be removing even "OU Sucks" and "Make 'em eat shit" because we aren't citing a citable source for that either. As much as I hate to remove this information about Texas A&M, which I know for a fact to be true, I changed it to use only the citable sources. Hopefully interested parties will also read this Talk page to see that our article is not giving the full story, and hopefully we will find a citable source soon. It's hard to get any real good citable source except from a student at UT @ Austin, which I am. Personally I have been to all the home games this semester and we chant "OU sucks" and "make 'em eat shit". I have never heard "go horns go" but that does not mean it's never been used before. As far as "A&M sucks" that is reserved for when we play A&M. As a PhD student, I have attended every home football game for the past 8 years. "Make 'em eat shit" is the accepted version in the student section. You don't hear anything else. In the alumni section, and where there are kids, "Go Horns go" is the standard. "OU sucks" is sung throughout the OU game, as well as the previous game once the score gets out of hand in UT's favor. Judging from the sound in the Cotton Bowl, I believe this includes the entire UT side of the stadium, not just the students. I would not be surprised about the "USC sucks" variant, but I have never heard it (or of it). I have never once heard "A&M Sucks." Texas Fight[edit]

I think it's funny how you t-sips didn't cite anything from this letter, which can be found on the same website:

"I wrote 'Texas Fight' ... in an attempt to counteract the songs and yells of the Texas Aggies, which were not too complimentary to our Student Body and some of which tended to ridicule 'The Eyes of Texas'.

"Long before I entered The University of Texas in 1909 and until about the year 1928 the Aggies had one of the most effective and awe inspiring songs used by any student body any where any time. 'Farmers Fight' at that time was their sacred College song. ... It was to them what 'The Eyes of Texas' had always been to us. The song was a repetition of the words 'Farmers Fight' sung to the well known bugle call 'Taps' in the same slow tempo as the bugle call is used by the army for lights out at night.

"Returning to Marlin, TX after World War One I resumed my practice of attending most of the Texas foot-ball games, especially those with A. & M. It occurred to me that an effective way to strike back at the Aggies was to write a 'Texas Fight' song in answer to their 'Farmers Fight' using the same bugle call 'Taps' changed to lively march time and having 'Texas' throughout the song instead of 'Farmers'.
