Hi Mark, I just saw your question about Fraser's appointment as PM. Yes he was appointed directly to replace Whitlam. It had nothing to do with the general election. In most parliamentary democracies, a PM is appointed by the head of state. Some require a prior nomination or subsequent confirmation. Like many, Australia's doesn't. The Governor-General, as he is constitutionally entitled to do through reserve powers, changed PMs the same day (at least I think it was the same day, but in any case, Fraser's appointment had nothing to do with the general election.

Technically the Queen has no role in the appointment, though if I remember the Commonwealth of Australia Act correctly, it might have been done in her name. In fact, even though a lot of the things the Governor-General does are done in HM's name, she has absolutely nothing to do with them, with the first information she gets being either a phonecall from Government House or reading it in the next morning's newspapers. Hi. I was just browsing through your contributions (I'm very nosy), and noticed you made a comment on User talk:Tim Starling/Sodium Chloride Temp about 4 months ago. It was news to me: I didn't have it on my watchlist. Sodium chloride is in the unfortunate position (along with gallium arsenide) of being half-done and forgotten about. It's not quite as spiffy as the 20 tables I did in bulk. I should really do something about that. Fetus/Foetus

Thanks for your note on my talk page about Australia's use of "foetus" instead of "fetus". I'm well aware of the use of "foetus" outside of the US. However, as has been noted on the Talk:Fetus and User talk:Hephaestos, both the IUPAC and NEJM—along with the British Medical Journal [1]—have argued that "foetus" is an incorrect spelling or, in the very least, prefer the use of "fetus" over "foetus". In fact, User:MMGB raised a great point when he mentioned that fetus is derived from the Latin "fetus", and that the pseudo-Greek usage of "oe" in "foetus" is simply wrong. --Diberri | Talk

They certainly have the largest membership and probably the largest supporter base of any of the Victorian clubs, although Essendon would be running them close. I doubt they have more supporters than the Adelaide or Perth teams, which have whole states to themselves. In any case they are certainly the most unpopular team in Victoria, since everyone who doesn't actually barrack for them hates them. This is partly traditional (when I was four my father said I could barrack for anyone I liked except Collingwood), but has been aggravated in recent years by McGuire's arrogance. Image Div on Selected Anniversaries

Hi Mark, I have to apologize- it was I that placed the image on Template:July 4 selected anniversaries. However, can you explain to me why the div is necessary? When I display it with just the |right| tag in the image tag, it looks fine in my browser. Other than the colored panels on the main page, are there any other areas where I should be careful about using divs for images? I'd have thought that searching for Perth would mean the original Perth, and when mentioning the place where you live, would have deliberately entered Perth, Western Australia or Perth, Australia. If that's your concern, don't worry about it. The article and pictures are connected. The article needs context. I understand, Mark. The article needs work, but it does describe something real which it is appropriate for Wikipedia to cover in all aspects. There are many challengable assumptions other than that the activities are illegal. I'm particularly bothered that there is virtually no distinction made between pre- and post-pubescent activity. re: Internet Explorer

I just saw a special:newpage by an anon IP entitled "removing Internet Explorer" and decided to merge it into the main IE page as it was unencyclopedic as it was. I though there would be enough people watching that page to clean it up and decide whether they wanted it or not. The question is what do you use to verify material? The Burger King ranking appears on the Advertising Age magazine Top 100 list of U.S. advertisers, 6/23/2003. If this isn't enough it's also published on page 270 of the 2004 World Almanac and Book of Facts.

Before you remove a fact you might want to use a variety of research tools and publications to verify it. You can't always judge facts by the way "the look." What methods do you follow? What tools do you use? Do you use any reference books? Are you only relying on what you find on the web?

Also, you might want to watch your use of "factoid." See the definition: http://www.m-w.com/cgi-bin/dictionary?book=Dictionary&va=factoid&x=0&y=0

Btw, I verified my England/warmest post using The 2004 World Almanac and Book of Facts a publication that's been around for around over 100 years and used as a basic reference book in most libraries and media organizations.

I'm happy to read that Wikipedia will soon be getting a board of review of experts.

Number of edits

Dear Mark, I saw a comment of yours on using the preview button to minimise edits. Are there guidelines on this? As a newbie I tend to edit an article, look at the preview and then save it. If I spot an error I have missed I then fix that. Then I might look at the article again for more things that need attention. I might spend and hour or two on an article doing 1-5 edits before moving on. This grazing and rather bovine behaviour suits me and means that I reduce the possibility of server conflicts on the article during my edits. I guess the other idea would be to post a template message asking people not to edit the article for the next hour and work on it slowly and methodically. Anyway, as stated earlier, is there a policy on this? Next question. Is there a law area where I can invite lawyers to look at articles/concepts? I have recently created a page and category Mental health law and I would appreciate lawyer input. Also the other articles referred to in that article need international attention. sports on the main page

Hi Doops. As far as I know, there is a convention on Wikipedia to not place local sports news on Current Events or In The News. This convention is similar to that of not placing fair use or licence-unknown images on the Main Page sections. The convention to not place sport stories on the Main Page is sometimes relaxed in situations such as the Superbowl and the Soccer World Cup, which are relevant to wide snapshots of the Wikipedia readership. During the Olympic Games, we were not allowed to put sports news on In The News. Instead, a separate Main Page section was created in order to keep the sport separate from the news. For these two reasons (sport on the main page, copyrighted logo on the main page) I removed your post. The truth with sport is that we cannot possibly cover every major sporting controversey on the Main Page. So we try to keep the items interesting and internationally important. - Mark 05:27, 30 Sep 2004 (UTC)

Hi. Of course local sports news shouldn't go on the front page; but this story seemed more than a merely local one to me — it's featured (for example) on the online front page of the New York Times, which doesn't usually cover much local Washington news. This story has been ongoing for years and years and the fact that a resolution has finally been reached is fairly newsworthy — not on a par with Korean nukes, of course, but the same sort of "human interest" story as the space flight and the asteroid (well..."lapidary interest" I guess). As for the logo — well, that wasn't my doing! :) Anyway, go ahead and remove it if you think it's too marginal. Doops 06:10, 30 Sep 2004 (UTC) [P.S. The Wrest Point Casino is in Hobart (that would be the one you are most likely familiar with) and the Country Club Casino is in Launceston (well, about 10km out) - very different style, as the name suggests! Changed a page to conform to British spelling for European subjects according to Wikipedia:Tutorial_(Keep_in_mind)#U.S._English_vs._British_English. Is this wrong to do, just correcting spelling for a region such as British spelling for the European Union countries. I thought this was acceptable. Edit war?

Excuse me? I did one rollback, then I did a revert. In the second edit summary I stated that Dan Rather is not obscure, the stated reason for why the anon claims to have removed article.

I'd advise not being so quick on claiming I was involved in an edit war. Sheesh. If he'd removed it again I would have taken it to talk and not reverted again. OK, I wasn't to know that however. I explained on the talk page already that the first rollback was because I suspected vandalism, the second was to put an appropriate edit summary. Article Licensing

Hi, I've started a drive to get users to multi-license all of their contributions that they've made to either (1) all U.S. state, county, and city articles or (2) all articles, using the Creative Commons Attribution-Share Alike (CC-by-sa) v1.0 and v2.0 Licenses or into the public domain if they prefer. The CC-by-sa license is a true free documentation license that is similar to Wikipedia's license, the GFDL, but it allows other projects, such as WikiTravel, to use our articles. Since you are among the top 1000 Wikipedians by edits, I was wondering if you would be willing to multi-license all of your contributions or at minimum those on the geographic articles. Over 90% of people asked have agreed. For More Information:

My Adminship

Wikipedia:Requests for adminship/Squash
I indeed regret that my adminship had turned out 100% supportive to a very controvesial one. That was until Reene & co. came. I have thoughts in my mind that the opposers had discussed as a whole on IRC to afffect this adminship. (Upon my entrance to the #wikipedia channel, I saw a list of names of all my supporters immediately after blinking my eyes on the screen - it was brillant and a highly coincidental chance, that). I therefore assume they were talking about adminship or mine in particular.

If people think I am immature then I agree to not come on the #wikipedia _ever_ again (exc. other wikipedia channels of other languages and other wikimedia projects and the #en.wikipedia channel where I will not act 'immature') That is contrary to belief by some people.

But as with other people there are people out there ruin the reputation of other people. It should be noted that I have worked hard for the Wikipedia, despite a whole bunch of the edits may be on some mass Wikipedia projects. But, other people have just mostly reverted vandalism or just do mass Wikipedia projects. I don't think the opposers understand me very well, indeed some of them may think I am inmature.

But to the other some (as Masterhomer) suggested I am light hearted, I want to have a good time. I had wait 6 months, 1 dream and want this adminship. Further more the high casual IRC room is a tottaly different place from the Wikipedia itself. As strange as it may seem... but on the Wikipedia, editors have to be quite serious whilst on IRC it is there for some light hearted comments (#wikipedia is for such whilst #en.wikipedia is for serious, Wikipedia related talk).

It is also should be noted that even indeed Reene did say (assumingly) I am a troll, she did in fact suggested that I was one. This is because she refuses to name any of the names of the people who think I am so and therefore it is assumed that just was making this fact. She did not alledge it, she implied - and therefore that is a very serious allegation against me. It is known that the innocent should be given the benefit of the doubt and she did not prove... that I did so (See first page of comments). It was all out of the word of mouth, it is biased as a person will listn to a person they like better. You don't listen to everything that you hear - and this is one of the cases. If a person who is light hearted does that automatically qualify them as a troll? You should know because you are a Law/Commerce student, I also know this because I learnt this and school, and next year I learn Legal studies.

Shane Warne and Ricky Ponting have had controvesy off the field, but that doesn't make them bad sportsmen. Ricky has now been promoted into one of Australia's successful test and ODI captains. There will always be a rebuttal to an argument, it can never stop. But I hope you can relate to this and give me a fair go and support me.

Hi there,

I'm a Polymer Technologist, by trainging, but that was a long time ago. I suggest that if you are interested in more of the technical side of rubber, and there's lots to go at you try to get hold of a copy of Rubber Technology by Blow. The UK Insitute of Materials has a group of people who are interested in Rubber too. There is also the Malaysian Rubber Producer's Association, based in Bricondenbury, Hertfordshire, UK and the International Institute of Synthetic Rubber Producers, Houston, Texas. Crain Communications publishes a number of trade magazines whihc feature the latet developments in rubber technology and the companies that process the many different rubber materials.

We were taught that rubber seeds were smugged out of Brazil, propogated at the Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew, London, England and then shipped to Malaysia which was under UK control. I've got a feeling this was about 1820.

Skirts and Dresses

While I have no objection to text that seems "weird" appearing in Wikipaedia, I think you may have not properly understood my actions. I believe that the following sentence is simply inaccurate, but whether it is or not, I believe that its author is simply taking an oppertunity to rant, to use wikipaedia as a soapbox, if you will:

"In many cultures there is a significant social prejudice against those who choose to adhere to traditional female gender roles (sometimes termed being a "girly girl") by wearing dresses and skirts."

Is there really "significant social prejudice" against young women who wear dresses and skirts? There certainly isn't in the United States, Germany, France, Britain, Spain, or Japan, for instance, all countries where sales of skirts and dresses to young women are brisk, countries where one can see many young women wearing skirts or dresses in both professional and casual settings. Wikipaedia should not have inaccurate information, whether one agrees with me or not that these inaccuracies take the form of an eccentric rant.Zantastik 20:57, 8 Jan 2005 (UTC)

Central Park

Judging the height of a skyscraper is a tricky business. It's even worse when the building has a spire or antenna on its roof. Depending on what system you use, the 'heights' of buildings can be very difficult to pin down. Central Park is 249m to the top of its pinnacle, and 226m to its roof. If we ignore spire heights (which I like to), and count only to the roof, Central Park would be the 5th tallest building in Australia, (after Rialto Towers, World Tower, MLC Centre, and Governor Phillip Tower) and the tallest in Perth. (My source: SkyscraperPage diagram). If we count the pinnacle height, Central Park actually comes in at 6th place (after 120 Collins Street, 101 Collins Street, Bourke Place, Rialto Towers, and Governor Phillip Tower). (SkyscraperPage diagram - I ignored the order of the buildings and counted only the listed pinnacle heights). The problem with pinnacle heights is that some are 'official' and some are not. Generally, a spire that is an integral architectural component of the building, or serves no purpose other than aesthetic, is counted in the building's height, while an antenna that serves purely or primarily a communicative function, will not be. If an antenna is still considered an architectural feature, it may still be counted. But it might just as well not be counted. It all depends on who you ask. There is no way though that I can see Central Park being listed higher than the 5th place no matter what is and what isn't counted. As you can see in the second diagram, some building's antennas aren't counted, while some building's spires or antenna-spires are counted. In fact, BankWest Tower might well be Perth's tallest (and Australia's 5th tallest) according to one system of 'official' heights.

common law v code and provocation

the difference in australian jurisdictions is extremely annoying. personaly, i preffer a code based approach. however one advantage to being in one of the common law states is that the high court sets uniform common law across australia. thus, no need to sift through annoying statutes when going from state to state. Stub image

So if I moved it to sparky (comic), then the history for any other material would be int he wrong place; if I left it where it was, the history for the comic part would be in the wrong place. Kurdistan Workers Party and, Abdullah Ocalan are constantly being vandalised bu User:Stereotek, his dealings with me started after my neutrality request for the Armenian Genocide article and is ona conquest to find any of my work and revert it. The user is "hunting" me down and you must stop that. I do not care about mediation when a user starts hunting me down. I am getting serriously annoyed with this person.
