Add Minangkabau[edit]

I added a little background information and made one substantive addition to refer to the Minangkabau. Other than that, the page did what is was supposed to do.

Hi David91. I tend to disagree with you on that Minangkabau matronymic names. Although they have a matrilineal society, they do not have matronymic names. They have clan names, such as Chaniago, Piliang, Gucci etc., and some family names (usually based on their male forefather names or aliases), such as Salim, Nazar, Djambek, Hasan, etc. Or perhaps you could give us a few examples of the matronymic names? (Coz I could be wrong). Thanks mate.

Birth-order names[edit]

Many Indonesians are named after their birth order (3rd son, etc.). It would be nice to have a chart for at least either Malay or Javanese. (I had a list at one time, but have no idea where it is now.) kwami 08:58, 2 November 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Batman bin Suparman[edit]

I wonder if the story about an Indonesian man called "Batman bin Suparman" is really true: http://www.weirdasianews.com/2008/04/03/singapore-superhero-batman-bin-suparmen/ --Austrian (talk) 18:37, 12 November 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Even if true, how is it relevant for this article? --Merbabu (talk) 20:33, 12 November 2009 (UTC)[reply]
It is an Indonesian name that has received world-wide coverage in the English language press. --Austrian (talk) 17:58, 3 December 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Yet, it is still trivia. A one-hit-wonder flash in the band, that really is of no consequence. As I suggested, of no relevance. --Merbabu (talk) 09:15, 4 December 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Unfortunately, Batman gone on the wrong side of the law - he got arrested and jailed.

Batman bin Suparman jailed in Singapore for theft, housebreaking and drug offences

Batman bin Suparman

Batman bin Suparman has not been fighting crime - he's been committing it.

A SINGAPOREAN whose superhero-sounding name turned him into a social media celebrity has been jailed for nearly three years for theft, housebreaking and drug offences.

Batman bin Suparman, an unemployed 23-year-old whose name translates to "Batman son of Suparman", was arrested on August 19 after security videos showed him sneaking into a store at night on two separate occasions.

He stole a total of $SG500 ($425) from the store, court documents showed.

Batman also pleaded guilty to various other charges, including stealing his brother's ATM card to make withdrawals amounting to $SG650, and consuming heroin. He was sentenced to a total of 33 months in jail.

Batman became a social media sensation after an image of his identity card with his unusual name was circulated online.

A "Batman bin Suparman Fan Club" page on Facebook has garnered nearly 11,000 likes so far. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 103.6.151.202 (talk) 19:39, 11 November 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Arabic names[edit]

I have two questions about the second paragraph in the section "Arabic names", copied here:

"Ethnic groups with strong Islamic influence tend to use Islamic names, such as Acehnese, Malay, Minangkabau, Betawi, Sundanese and Bugis. For example, Indonesian badminton athlete Taufik Hidayat has an Arabic name. Mohammad Hatta is also an Arabic name."

I thought this article was about Indonesian personal names (first, last, etc.). Unless I have misunderstood it, the first sentence in this paragraph seems to be about names of ethnic groups. Does this sentence belong in the article?

Also, if it does belong in the article and in this place, and I have not misunderstood the sentence, then the next sentence ("For example,...") does not seem to be an example of it. CorinneSD (talk) 22:26, 24 March 2014 (UTC)[reply]

I see this has been fixed by a rearrangement of words. It's now clear. CorinneSD (talk) 02:01, 25 March 2014 (UTC)[reply]
