how to pronounce[edit]

loved this band for years, never knew how to say "x-mal" so i've never really talked about it with anyone.

The "x" is pronounced in the same way as the last syllable in "polit-ics", and "-mal" (meaning "-fold" or "times") as in "mal-ediction". -- marilyn.hanson 12:08, 23 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]

A German would say it 'ix mal' but in the UK they were always referred to as 'eks mal'...erroneously, I know, in the same way as Kraftwerk are wrongly pronounced by English speakers as 'craftwork' instead of 'craftverk'. Vauxhall1964 (talk) 22:55, 20 August 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Meaning of the name?[edit]

Hi,

does anyone know why the group was named like that? Literally, it means "X times Germany" or "Germany x-fold". There is a slogan of the radical left in Germany, "Nie wieder Deutschland" - "Germany never again". I don't know whether the band name is paraphrasing or ironizing this slogan, maybe. Although the slogan became popular throughout the left around 1990, with the unification of Germany and the accompanying nationalistic hype; so I don't know whether it existed in 1980, when Xmal Deutschland began ... -- marilyn.hanson 12:08, 23 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]

A the time the band were formed - 1980 - the Cold War was in full swing and Germany was divided into East and West, and AFAIK the band's name simply means 'many Germanies', i.e, that there was more than one type of German, and more than one type of Germany. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 95.148.220.15 (talk) 18:29, 9 January 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Red links[edit]

There seem to be a lot of red links on this page at the moment: I'll give it a month or so, and then if nobody has created pages for any of them, I'll remove the links Dom Kaos (talk) 22:04, 5 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Right, no objections, so I've removed the red links. As Wikipedia's Manual of style says, red links can be removed "if they point to articles that are unlikely ever to be created": if anyone feels that any of these band members are notable, please feel free to create pages for them and link them back to this page Dom Kaos (talk) 09:41, 1 February 2009 (UTC)[reply]
