Misclasification of CDPs[edit]
- Turn off the bot. It has miscategorized Scotts Corners, New York, whose article was fixed to reflect that it's a CDP. We don;t need to increase the misinformation in Wikipedia. Nelson Ricardo 11:46, Nov 15, 2004 (UTC)

I have prepared a fix for articles which have CDP in the title but which say in the body that they are towns. Please see Wikipedia:Auto-categorization. I have removed any articles with CDP in the title from the list of articles left to categorize, as well.
As for articles which have been edited to more say "census-designated place" instead of town, only those so edited after September 24, 2004 would be improperly classified. I will prepare a list based on a more recent database dump, and post it to the above page shortly, and will make sure these get fixed promptly. There is a proposal on Wikipedia:WikiProject Cities, however, to more even more accurately re-classify these as sections or unincorporated areas or whatnot. -- Beland 06:35, 17 Nov 2004 (UTC)
- I have completed an automated scan for all articles edited between 24 Sep 2004 and 06 Nov 2004, where the words "census" and "designated" have appeared in the first 500 characters. This turned up three or four CDPs improperly categorized as towns, but properly identified in the body text, and I fixed them manually. I will do the same for 06-15 Nov as soon after the latest database dump is finished being analyzed by Pearle. -- Beland 07:12, 18 Nov 2004 (UTC)

- Ah, as it happens, after reading recent discussion on WP:CFD, I was inspired to fix exactly this problem. I recently finished re-writing the category-moving code so now it does this kind of remove-add in one edit instead of two, as requested. There should be a bunch of edits from today demonstrating this in action.
- I also added some more sophisticated code to avoid overloading Wikipedia servers with edits; if HTTP POSTs are too slow, it will put the bot to sleep for a little while, and if POSTs fail, it will sleep for 1, 10, and 60 minutes (in sequence) before retrying.-- Beland 06:30, 16 Jan 2005 (UTC)

The name has been fixed and has been populated by just two articles - however, the previous category - that is now posted for deletion - had a dozen members (or so). Destructive bot[edit]
Is this bot a good idea? It is renaming categories that are nominated for change, but there doesn't seem to be a record on the WP:CfD page. The cats aren't visible or populated when formed. - Could you point to a particular problematic example? There are some timing issues - I first move articles and subcategories for a bunch of cases, then I move the body text over in a second run, which links the new categories into the larger hierarchy. I only run on categories listed on WP:CFD and approved for deletion, so if there's a category you can't find there, it may have been de-listed or linked on a subpage or something...I should be able to help you find it if you have a particular case in mind. -- Beland 06:38, 16 Jan 2005 (UTC)
Sorry: I automatically go into rant mode when I see a bot doing its best to mess up Wikipedia. What I meant to say was ...
The bot didn't seem to have any authority for what it was doing when I looked at CfD. However, I've looked through the history, and see why it's doing what it's doing, now. It might have been preferable to leave the section on the page, with a note, until the activities had been completed.
I also think it would have been better to put the category structure in place first, rather than relying on the bot. I notice that someone else has done a couple of edits to try and tidy things up. I fear I may have caused more harm than good in my attempts to set things right.
- OK, in the future I will run TRANSFER_TEXT_ACTUALLY before MOVE_CONTENTS. I have changed the text of the note left by the former so that it will be clear to passersby that a bot will take care of the remaining cleanup, so they don't waste time trying to do it themselves or mis-re-categorize things or something. -- Beland 22:45, 17 Jan 2005 (UTC)

Fixing this behavior is a somewhat complex task, but I guess I can occasionally download http://www.wikimedia.org/langlist and use that to reliably identify interwiki links. - Ah, please check your facts a little more carefully before going non-linear: Category:Films by country was listed on CfD (by Beland, on 15 Jan 2005). "Polish films" is a sub-category of that, which is why it was tagged. In other words, the action was completely appropriate - it's warning people that the category has been listed on CfD. - Well, considering that Pearle is a bot operated by Beland and Beland is the one who originally listed the category, it's a bit academic whether the comments go here or on Beland's talk page, although the best place would probably be on the Categories for Deletion page (a further academic point, the proposal is to rename the category rather than simply delete it outright). But in any case, it appears that Dunc was not even aware that Pearle is a bot. - In that particular case, yes; I hadn't realized they were the same person. But the general point remains - people are getting all upset at the bots doing CfD leg-work, but it's generally (there are some exceptions, e.g. taking two edits to change categories, below) the case that the bots are operating just fine, and just doing i) what they were told to do, and ii) things that would be completely acceptable if a person did them. It's my understanding that Pearle is authorized to add CFD tags...I posted at Wikipedia_talk:Bots#Pearle_Wisebot on 5 Dec 2004 and gave a demonstration of the capability at that time. No one has since objected to the bot doing that, in general, as far as I know. - Sorry about that; there were a few bugs in the code, one of which was exposed when I accidentally ran the bot twice on the same articles. (It shouldn't have changed anything the second time.) An extra copy of the "interlanguage" comment got added as a result, and then removed on the third (and hopefully final) pass. I'll move the detailed description of what is happening to Pearle's user page, which may help people figure out what's going on. Jack London probably did not kill himself[edit]
The serious scholars currently seem to think that, as Clarice Stasz puts it, it was a "biographical myth" based on a feeling that it was "in character," on a stray remark by George Sterling who was a friend of Jack London but had no direct knowledge of the circumstances of his death, and a very popular and influential but highly slipshod biography by Irving Stone. In addition, people who disapproved of his Socialist politics liked to portray him as having met a bad end.
I'm inclined to think Jack London should not be in that category at all.

- The comment doesn't really tell anyone anything about the style, just that they are interwiki links. Now I would assume most people would tend to leave something alone if they don't understand what it is (I've never had a problem of reverting an innocent interwiki links removal). I think the general article order style is just something to be hashed out by people as they edit (this I do do quite often) and filling up an article with style info.....well, I just don't see it happening. Wider availability[edit]
So Aranel has requested the ability to be able to operate a Pearle clone. Now that some community complaints have been addressed, it may be time to tidy up the code and documentation so it's suitable for sharing.
AllyUnion has posted a proposal for a bot with similar capabilities to be permanently posted somewhere on the web. I may be contributing Pearle's code to this project, which would obviate the need for a "do it yourself" bot release, and this might be less work for me.
I'm already busy with other unrelated requests and responsibilities right now, so we'll see where the AllyUnion project goes, and if it stalls, I'll probably proceed with a simply DIY release. -- Beland 07:53, 21 Mar 2005 (UTC)

Why was this category listed for deletion or renaming? A bot with the ability to list categories for deletion should in my opinion at least be able to specify the reason(s) for the action in either the Edit summary, the category's talk page or at Wikipedia:Categories for deletion. I'm not saying this category is perfect, but I wouldn't want it to be deleted without at least one reason, or a new name proposal. I'm removing the {{cfd}} message until further notice. Usage?[edit]
I found Perle through a link which implied that it is a tool for editors. I don't see how to request that it perform a task. The instructions specify the format of files which contain commands, but not how to present a command file to Pearle. (SEWilco 19:16, 30 Mar 2005 (UTC))

link order in Chalcis[edit]
Looking at the article Chalcis, it appears that there are actually two articles there. A category is (properly?) at the end of the first article, before the horizontal rule before the second (two line) article. I feel that the category placement is OK (but others may not agree), and it puts the association of the remaining categories at the end of the article in doubt. Pearle is also finding articles with complete duplicated sections, including interwiki links and categories. Since I've now found (and corrected) two such articles, I wonder if it would be worth putting in an algorithm to detect that. I suppose one could write an alorithm intentionally designed to detect this type of page. Certainly a category ordering error is a good indication, and the number of horizontal lines would also be an excellent input. But that's outside the scope of what I'm doing. I wouldn't trust an algorithm to tag articles properly without human review. So "flagged for manual review" seems like the right thing to do. Unless you were suggesting handling these cases in some other way? I'm not sure what you are doing exactly with compare-window (finding differences?). -- Beland 23:59, 12 Mar 2005 (UTC)
I wasn't implying you should try to fix split articles with the bot. Actually, I'm not sure what the best way to fix them is myself. I've so far left them alone. The last item are articles where entire sections are duplicated, such as [2] and the previous edit. I believe a edit conflict / section editing bug causes this. Detecting these should be easy--just look for duplicated section headers, and then do a verbatim text comparison from there. If the whole section is identical, the bot can delete one copy safely. If not, but it is substantially similar, tagging would be helpful for manual repair. At the very least, you could remove duplicate interlanguage/category links before you mangle them and make it dififcult to compare them for identicalness. Making a list of duplicated section names would also be helpful. Or something like that. --ssd 03:58, 13 Mar 2005 (UTC)

Scanning for not deleted categories[edit]
Did you ever put in functionality to scan Category:Categories for deletion for categories containing template:cfd but not listed in WP:CFD? I just found Category:German botanists which was last edited March 9, but I could not find it listed. If it were listed, I'd vote against deleting it, as it has 51 entries, too many to merge into another category, and it doesn't look spelled wrong, etc... Did we already decide to keep it? I'm sure there's others like that. Let me know if you are not scanning for those, and I'll start working on doing it manually. --ssd 16:10, 20 Mar 2005 (UTC)
- I actually just ran such a scan last night, which is where the "forgotten" deletions in "Delete me" came from. The results were varied and sundry; it will take me a while to figure out what to do with the discrepancies. Pearle is currently attempting to fix all pages that contain template transclusions that begin with {{msg:. This syntax is depreciated and will reportedly be incompatible with MediaWiki 1.5. The parsing algorithm for doing category/interwiki cleanup is being recycled, to help avoid "fixing" references within nowiki tags, etc. This may result in a small number of minor edits which do nothing more than switch the order of category and interwiki tags. Pearle generally does not make edits of this type unless something else is being changed at the same time because it's seen as too trivial to justify the server load and extra storage space to do this.
