Documentary filming in Yorkville[edit]

Does anyone have any information about a documentary being filmed in the neighborhood? I've seen camera crews in some of the bars in the past week following around a few people and doing some kind of narrative. Existent80 02:44, May 23, 2005 (UTC)

Citing sources[edit]

This article is informative but poorly cited. Some statements cry out for citation: the attribution of the highest robbery rate in Manhattan, for example. Bombyx 01:11, 31 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]

what does unhip means??

Where is Yorkville in re: Lenox Hill?[edit]

I thought about starting a stub for Lenox Hill, Manhattan, since it's redlinked in the Manhattan neighborhood template, but then it realized it would be redundant with this article. This NYT piece declares Upper East Side east of 3rd Ave as Lenox Hill, which is pretty much what Yorkville is, according to this article.

Now, I know they're not one and the same, since I hear the two mentioned separately, but where are the borders? Help would be appreciated. Mosmof 19:01, 26 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]

59th Street?/Southern Boundary[edit]

As a lifelong resident of yorkville, and someone who has read up on the history of the neighborhood using both the internet and books, I've never once heard anything south of 70th street being referenced as yorkville. Regularjohn july 24, 2007

I've edited the article to say that 72nd street is the rough southern border of yorkville Regularjohn 17:52, 24 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Hey, I just updated the southern boundary in the article to reflect that there is some disagreement as to its precise location. I have seen maps, articles, and books that refer to 59th Street as the southern boundary. And, I have always considered it to be so. However, given that others are saying it is 72nd, I think it would be ok just to say locals disagree. Can we agree on that? JDL10128 - 7 January, 2008.

My $.02: I wouldn't consider south of 72nd Yorkville, and even 72nd is a stretch. I'd say it's much closer to 79th-96th. 66.57.252.97 (talk) 18:10, 1 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]

There are many sources citing 59th Street as the southern border. For instance, look at the WPA Guide to New York City, a reputable guide to the city. That book puts the southern border at 59th Street. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 91.7.10.43 (talk) 23:55, 19 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Yorkville - the nostalgia section from the late 50's and early 60's[edit]

A web site about the community Yorkville on the east side of Manhattan that we grew up in years ago. Check out the pictures, share some memories, and join some of the conversations from old friends from the old neighborhood. Most of us remember many of the good times from back then but don't recall most of the items mentioned on the Yorkville of today.

We're constantly adding content to the old neighborhood web pages. We were mentioned on these pages as a source of material anbd pictures from the neighborhhod.

If you want to share in some of what real memories are all about, then click on this link below:

St. Joseph’s[edit]

The NYT seems to claim St. Joseph’s Roman Catholic Church on East 87th Street was a major center for German Catholics in Yorktown "from the late 1800s through the mid-20th century".

Orwasher's Bakery[edit]

Article currently reads in part:

"Today there are few remnants of Yorkville's German origins (Schaller & Weber grocery shop, Heidelberg Restaurant and a German church, Orwasher's bakery), Glaser's Bakery, but it has largely become an upper middle class residential neighborhood."

A friend pointed out to me that they were under the impression that Orwasher's was actually Hungarian in origin (and as I recall, around 79th ST was where Hungarian immigrants settled, e.g. se [1]).

Anyone have definitive info on Orwasher's origin?

Today's edits[edit]

I'm sure they were added in good faith, but regarding some of the uncited or poorly cited content and copyright-violating material I removed today, it's each editor's responsibility to be aware of at least basic Wikipedia policies and guidelines. You'll find them succinctly stated at the Five Pillars of Wikipedia. Among the core policies is No Original Research, which means no personal observations gleaned from memory or from walking down the street in Yorkville, and no citing of personal correspondence. Everything here has to cited to a reliable source, such as newspaper / magazine articles or recognized journalistic websites (and no personal blogs). As well, we cannot have copyright violations, meaning you can't just copy-paste passages from copyrighted sources, or copy-paste them with a word or two changed.

Again, I'm sure these edits were added in good faith. Please simply remember, this is an encyclopedia — an academic research documents — and certain basic rules of proper research and citation obviously must apply. Please see these bluelinked policies and guidelines, and your constructive edits will be much appreciated. --Tenebrae (talk) 17:52, 7 February 2013 (UTC)[reply]

March 2013[edit]

Aside from the anon IP who added uncited, non-encyclopedic puffery and non-neutral tone to the article, I've reverted another's uncited WP:SOAPBOXing that's all a WP:DATED violation and original-research synthesis. Geez, how many Wikipedia policies and guidelines can one editor break at once? --Tenebrae (talk) 23:56, 18 March 2013 (UTC)[reply]

As an observation, the concept of an encyclopedia is not understood by most people. Encyclopedias have editors, not authors. If you have original concepts, recollections and experiences you want to relate to others, then publish them in an article in a pamphlet, book, journal, newspaper, etc. Wikipedia is an encyclopedia, a resource for people who want basic knowledge of something. So use links so people can get more detailed information on associated topics.
Conversely a few editors of this Yorkville page do not understand the role of a senior editor. A senior editor takes the imperfect product of junior editors and refines it. To just delete the efforts of junior editors is pathetic. Do a little editing at a higher level: Find citations and add them to sentences or paragraphs, find alternate noncopyrighted information, and most importantly do not assume that copyrights added to certain works about Yorkville are valid (most are not!). The Yorkville page is sparse. For such an important area of the world, all of you should use best practices seen on some of the neighborhood pages for other major cities. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 24.11.169.223 (talk) 17:27, 9 March 2014 (UTC)[reply]
That sounds like a reasonable point, and helping new or inexperienced editors is an important thing that I and others who have been here a while try and do; it's very rewarding to be thanked and to feel you've helped another person. That said, and I do speak as a professional editor, there is editing and there is rewriting. Sometimes a Wikipedian's large edit or a whole series of edits are so off-base and violate so many guidelines and policies that doing what amounts to a rewrite and re-research is not right to ask us to do when, after all, all editors are responsible for their own edits. If someone jumps in without knowing even the basics of how Wikipedia works, others shouldn't have to do their work for them. When newcomers are making an effort, I'm generally more than happy to help. --Tenebrae (talk) 18:15, 9 March 2014 (UTC)[reply]
And you're absolutely right that this culturally and socially important geographic area needs a much more expansive article. I'll try and help when I can. --Tenebrae (talk) 18:16, 9 March 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Friends of New Germany: The Friends of New Germany was led by Spanknöbel and was openly pro-Nazi, and engaged in activities such as storming the German language newspaper New Yorker Staats-Zeitung with the demand that Nazi-sympathetic articles be published, the infiltration of other non-political German-American organizations, and the use of propaganda to counter the Jewish boycott of businesses in the heavily German neighborhood of Yorkville, Manhattan.

There's no source for this, but if there were one it might be interesting for this article too. Felsic2 (talk) 17:32, 13 January 2017 (UTC)[reply]

The neighborhood is NOT among the most affluent in the city.[edit]

"The neighborhood, in Manhattan Community Board 8,[2] is among the most affluent in the city." This is misleading, the article explains the neighborhood goes from 3rd avenue and east to the East River. The reference citing Manhattan Community Board 8 clearly states Manhattan Community Board 8 extends from the East River all the way west to 5th Avenue, so the neighborhood they're calling among the most affluent includes a large section which is NOT part of Yorkville. The affluence comes primarily from the area west of 3rd avenue, which includes Madison Ave, Park Ave and 5th Ave. Regardless, the reference does not support the claim.
