Pitch pipe ranges

I am in a college choral group, and was looking to buy a pitchpipe, so I naturally took a look at the Pitchpipe article, where I see you added a section mentioning the difference between F-F and C-C pipes. I was wondering if you might answer a question I had about that topic.

I have read online (e.g. [1] and Pitchpipe) and heard from several people that men usually use the F-F range. However, the site I was planning on buying from says the opposite ([2] and [3]). Also, I was able to find one of each and compare them, and the C-C definitely goes lower than the F-F (at least on the Master Key pipes). If this is the case, why would men use the ones with the higher range? Why is a-cappella.com describing C-C as for men when most other sources say it's for women?

I was just wondering if someone with more experience with this could clear this up for me (and I suppose it's somewhat related to the article too). Thanks in advance.  – Jrdioko (Talk) 06:41, 15 February 2007 (UTC)

Actually, I have an update myself. I just called the Harmony Marketplace (link above) to ask them their take on the issue, and they said that, while F-F is higher in pitch, it is preferred for men because of the keys they typically sing in and the way they tune up. The C-C range works better for women for the same reasons. Mixed groups are less clear but would probably go with F-F. I don't understand enough about barbershop singing to understand this completely, but that explains the difference in how different sites are labeling the pipes.  – Jrdioko (Talk) 20:20, 26 March 2007 (UTC)
