Condemnation of Properties in Stony Brook[edit]

Why is there nothing in here referring to Ward Melville's infamous condemnation of 50 houses and their properties, along with the local school at the time? He had these properties condemned along with the school and had these properties and their families relocated to a less desirable part of Stony Brook village so that he could in turn acquire the property without compensating them... Why is there no mention of this in this article? Stevenmitchell (talk) 01:02, 19 August 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Errors in the Ward Melville writeup[edit]

I grew up somewhat knowing the Melvilles which should be no surprise since he was very close to my paternal grandmother.

The home in Old Field was always Sunwood during our overlapping years; if it had an earlier name i do not know it. Yes, Mr. Melville donated the land for part of SUNY SB which he envisioned as a small teachers’ college at first, but not the high school land if my memory serves. Yes, he remade part of Stony Brook itself and that certainly was a contentious topic for decades with pluses for the town but negatives for some families. There are errors in the write-up, i am afraid.

i do not know why, but for a number of years when he was a child, he and his mother rented an upstairs apartment in Brooklyn from my grandmothers’ parents. The two small families became close for the rest of their lives and my grandmother, Sarah Graves, often helped care for him. He regularly visited her and her parents after her marriage and her family’s move to Port Jefferson and said that played a large role in him coming to appreciate the neighboring Three Villages area. 47.18.31.227 (talk) 15:14, 13 March 2023 (UTC)[reply]

BTW, Graves was Grandma’s maiden name, so the essential one to know if people seek records on Melville’s childhood. 47.18.31.227 (talk) 15:17, 13 March 2023 (UTC)[reply]
