Welcome/user login

Welcome. I noticed your work, which is exacting. There are advantages to a distinct User login. For example, you can create a watchlist of the articles that you care about. Would you like to create an account for your edits? Thank you, Ancheta Wis 07:44, 2 Nov 2004 (UTC)

Thanks, but I prefer to be slightly less anonymous :)

I came to urge you to log in too, as User:Richard Owen if you like. It's really just as anonymous. --Wetman 18:25, 21 Dec 2004 (UTC)

I second that. Thanks for your help on chorale cantata--the numbered list is better. Antandrus 03:21, 12 Nov 2004 (UTC)
My pleasure. I don't know anything about music, but it made more sense to me that way. 68.81.231.127 04:29, 12 Nov 2004 (UTC)

Cryolophosaurus

Thanks for your great work on Cryolophosaurus. It sounds like you would prefer to stay anonymous and that is of course your decision. It would be great if you made yourself a user account (with a pseudonym if you would like) so you can watch pages and become more involved in the community. Zachlipton 20:42, 26 Nov 2004 (UTC)

Thank you. And my user page works just fine as a watchlist. :) 68.81.231.127 21:04, 26 Nov 2004 (UTC)
heh. It's up to you of course. Zachlipton 00:10, 27 Nov 2004 (UTC)

New mail

If I respond to your comments on my talk page, will it notify you of new mail? I had some questions about fair use. Nathanlarson32767 14:51, 29 Nov 2004 (UTC)

Category:Extinct animals

That's a good idea you've suggested - it will help to keep the category less cluttered. I'll make the categories you've mentioned subcategories. --Andrew 21:57, 3 Dec 2004 (UTC)

Thanks for the pointers

I'd made the probably rather silly assumption that people would be using the proper names rather than things like "Tetanuran Theropod" .. I'll try and be more careful in future! --User:MattDP 08:50, 8 Dec 2004 (UTC)

Absolutely excellent article, keep up the good work. --Oldak Quill 12:22, 17 Dec 2004 (UTC)

Thanks for informing people of the new DYK facts! Here's a flower!

Thank you for suggesting my article be nominated for DYK. I've only been a Wikipedian for 6 days now, but I already feel special. Thank you very, very much! RyanGerbil10 19:33, 20 Dec 2004 (UTC)

How you doing 68-------?, Thanks for your kind words about my Lynda Lopez article. I'm glad that you really enjoy my articles, that's one of the best compliments a writer can receive. DYK notification template

The DYK notification template links to the DYK template itself... should it link here instead? 68.81.231.127 10:14, 20 Dec 2004 (UTC)

The article also links to the talk page. But it only links to talk when you place the template outside of talk. Links to the page you're on turn bold and un-linked. BTW, thanks for informing everyone. :) Mgm|(talk) 10:21, Dec 20, 2004 (UTC)
Yes, the title leads to the template itself. That's merely to educate new users in where there suggestion ended up. I feel we have to show people how the updating works instead of being a closed group of editors-in-chief. The template's high visibility makes it easy for other wikipedians to revert should vandalism occur. So far the link has not caused any problems. Mgm|(talk) 10:30, Dec 20, 2004 (UTC)
Good catch! I haven't been that clear in it when I created the headings in that section. I'd like to have them sorted by date of creation, to make sure we can feature articles before they become too old. Can you add that info to the page? Mgm|(talk) 11:30, Dec 20, 2004 (UTC)
Looks good, thanks! Mgm|(talk) 11:49, Dec 20, 2004 (UTC)

Mammal

Moving the mammal taxonomy to a new page has been on my to do list for a while now. Two issues have held me back: 1.) What page should it go to, mammal taxonomy, mammal classification, classification of mammals, etc. 2.) I'm a little hesitant to say what stays and what goes. A big part of that is that I don't like wikipedia's classification scheme, which as far as I can tell exists only here (Monotremata and Marsupialia used as names of subclasses; no recognition of Theria as distinct from the monotremes; where do multituberculates, triconodonts, etc. go in such a scheme?). So I'd like to see some alternatives left on the main mammal page. Anyway, I thought I'd see what you thought. Also, thanks for the great work on Repenomamus. I'm always eager to see your edits. --Aranae 18:45, Jan 21, 2005 (UTC)

Thanks for the input, I'm posting on Talk:Mammal like you suggested. So far that poll I voted in seems to be the only thing that can get my "wikistress" above the "just fine" level. I voted and stated my case only to discover much later that it was a dead vote and decided issue before I started contributing. I enjoy the articles and how working on them works, but I really can't seem to get all the behind the scenes talk, project, and admin stuff down.
As for taxonomy/phylogeny, I've always felt that it does answer the basic question of "what is it?" better than just about anything else. Whales being hippo-related artiodactyls, birds being dinosaurs, and humans being apes all fundamentally reshape how we think of whales, birds, and humans. And yes, the first thing I do when I get to an organism article is look at the taxobox to try and get an idea of what this creature is. You mean other people don't? It's probably good that in a place like wikipedia there are others to come along after me and do an excellent job of de-emphasizing the taxonomy and rounding things out. --Aranae 01:01, Jan 22, 2005 (UTC)

Dinosaurs of the Isle of Wight

Thankyou very much for your copyedits. I must admit the page is something of a pet of mine, but it is nice to see someone else who has the time to edit on what is quite a minor, regional subject. --Neo 13:22, 25 Jan 2005 (UTC)

RC Patrol

Good catch on Special Operations Commander "Half-Jaw". The article has changed substantially and, IMHO, is no longer a CSD. See my reply on RCp. Thank you. SWAdair | Talk 06:51, 1 Feb 2005 (UTC)

The page that I moved it from was a draft page that wasn't linked to anywhere, and from the wording of the Rules it seems like the only reason for keeping them in chronological order is for exposure reason, so that the most people can see an article for the first time through Did You Know, and since the current article didn't exist before Feb. 5, nobody could have viewed it, so it should remain at Feb. 5. Think about it this way: I could have just as easily copied the contents of the temp article and pasted them in the current article, and deleted the old one. As for govt images, they're public domain. The govt images were just blank maps, I had to put all the text and labels and everything on it. As for the newspaper image, I'm not sure what to put for it, I guess I could put a Fair Use tag on it, but it might be available for Public Domain by now. --brian0918™ 14:33, 5 Feb 2005 (UTC)

With respect to the govt map, wouldn't that mean that any map on wikipedia which wasn't completely drawn from scratch is not pd-self, but pd-usgov (if the original blank map came from a govt source), no matter how much work the person put into it or how little of the original blank map remains in the final version? --brian0918™ 16:25, 5 Feb 2005 (UTC)

DYK and Commons

You're right; unregistered would be the correct term in your case. :) I see you're the one who has much improved our coverage of dinosaur articles! (Not surprisingly, paleobiology is one of my prime interests, but I fear I know too little to make meaningful contributions.) And a big thank you for suggesting my article for DYK; that hasn't happened since I wrote giant isopod (though admittedly, I've not written many articles in the interim.)

As for the image, I do share your concerns about possible vandalism. The Commons seems to be more of a security hole than I first thought; I would have uploaded the image locally as I usually do, but I couldn't ignore the big bold letters on the upload screen this time (heh). Plus if I upload a PD image to en: there's the real possibility someone will move it to Commons later on and delete the original, and thus the record of upload will be lost from my contributions. Though I suppose in future I'll upload everything to en: to be safe, or at least until these possible security holes are addressed, somehow. -- Hadal 16:01, 7 Feb 2005 (UTC)

Thanks for suggesting the DONKEY.BAS article I started for Did You Know? last week. The sound is... horrible... as pretty much any sound you could make with the PC speaker was. If you really want to subject yourself to the game I'd suggest running the executable linked to from the article with an emulator like DOSBox. Andy Smith (talk) 17:56, 8 Feb 2005 (UTC)

LMLK seal artists

If you are the person who asked me How do the drawing styles suggest different artists, the answer involves paleography--handwriting or penmanship. The x4C types were written by somebody acquainted with the older style of letters, whereas most of the other types are of a later style. For example, in the old style, the head of the Paleo-Hebrew letter Mem looks very much like an English W (4 angular strokes resembling 2 V's side by side ) with a straight tail descending down from the right side. In the later style, the strokes of the head look more like 2 Lameds and the descending stroke curves upward. In addition, the construction of the x4C icons are dramatically different (less symmetrical) from the x4L types. So that's how we know there were different artists. Since the ones with the older style are also less elegant than the ones with the newer style, we have to ask ourselves why someone with such a lack of expertise would be chosen for this task, since the seals are related to some king (human or divine). If the purpose of the seals relates to the worship reformation of King Hezekiah, then it is not out of the question to consider whether the great prophet Isaiah engraved the x4C seals. That's part of the mystery surrounding this subject, but it's highly speculative. Isaiah was definitely literate, but it's doubtful whether he was experienced with the medium of seals, but even if he was, he was also elderly during Hezekiah's reign and fits the bill. I've posted this article at Wikipedia:Featured article candidates. --brian0918™ 23:24, 11 Feb 2005 (UTC)

I think I've fixed the image tags. If there's still a problem, let me know specifically what's wrong. --brian0918™ 01:02, 12 Feb 2005 (UTC)

Thanks for the help!! I was also thinking of doing an image gallery, as I generally like images in articles (especially historical ones). Should it just be a link in the "See also" section to a gallery on wikimedia commons? --brian0918™ 19:31, 13 Feb 2005 (UTC)

Time to register yet?

I noticed the good work you are doing, and that you have over 500 edits. Perhaps you would like to register yet? Be able to vote and the like? Alphax τεχ 03:06, Mar 3, 2005 (UTC)

He's taken modesty to an extreme that even I couldn't dare. -- BRIAN0918  03:11, 3 Mar 2005 (UTC)
Yeah, I think it's pretty cool. S/He has tons of great edits. --Aranae 03:26, Mar 3, 2005 (UTC)

Thanks, all of you. I'll probably register eventually, but it's just not very compelling. I can vote, with one notable exception; I just choose not to. I have missed the ability to move pages once or twice, but that's very minor; and while the ability to edit protected templates like DYK, or help cleanout the backup at WP:CP would be nice, that's another couple of hoops, and not a big deal. 68.81.231.127 16:52, 3 Mar 2005 (UTC)

Togo (dog)

Really nice work on the Togo (dog) article in such short time. I'm impressed and I just listed it on Wikipedia:Great editing in progress. Btw, I've been thinking that maybe the serum run should have its own article, too. Could cut down a tiny bit on the Iditarod article as well. But, anyway, great work. Keep'em coming. ;-) Shanes 00:33, 11 Mar 2005 (UTC)

Oh, I just jumped in when I saw Togo (dog) popping up on the RC page and then being speedied. The edits I did in a hury were basicly cut&paste from your Gunnar Kaasen and iditarod edits. Ok, looking forward to the serum run article. I've been thinking about doing it myself ever since I did my very first wikipedia article on Gunnar Kaasen (my grand uncle), but the book I planned on using as reference ("The race to Nome", it's some 40 years old or something) is at my parents and I haven't gotten to it yet... Shanes 00:51, 11 Mar 2005 (UTC)

I saw your edits on the Doug Swingley article, and wanted to offer another way you can help if you want to. This winter I am hoping to go to a race which Doug has entered (not Iditarod though). If I go, I hope that he will let me do a small interview with him. If you have any ideas for useful questions, please let me know and I will add them to my list. Concerning titanosaur

Hi static68. It's true, when I was editing titanosaur and Rapetosaurus I was a little rash (I only read it diagonally + short fact check on palaeos and dinosauricon). You see, I got confused because the article title is Titanosaur, while it started with "A titanosaurid..." and now you tell me it discusses Titanosauria (as two genera are nemegtosaurids-you're the specialist). The ToL guideline of defaulting to the lowest taxon only applies -I think- when the higher taxon only contains one lower taxon, which is clearly not the case with Titanosauridae or Titanosauria. Considering the "cladistics craze" in dinosaur taxonomy, it's probably best to accept that systematic levels never contain only one subclade. Not to mention the fact that (in the most correct way) a titanosaur is a Titanosaurus, and should redirect to that. Of course, the use of cladistics lessened the use of formal endings, that's true, but here on wikipedia we need to be clear. Deinonychosauria, Ankylosauria, Pachycephalosauria, they all end on -ia, both in the article titles and descriptions. Basically this is the formal ending or not discussion, pretty important stuff for the Wikiproject Dinosaurs imo. The fact that foosaur can be used informally to refer to Foosaurus, Foosauridae or Foosauria and whatnot is not something that should be repeated on every article, but it should get mentioned on the dinosaur article. I stand by my changes, Phlebas 15:11, 24 Mar 2005 (UTC)

Thanks...

...for the links. Very helpful on your part. (And I have the urge of placing here an emoticon. Damn you deviantART for your instillation of "bad habits") I know about the neutral point of view policy and I think I can handle writing according to it, but I hope that doesn't prevent one from being politely oppinionate.
