Talk:Chomsky and anti-semitism

In a later debate with philosophy professor Robert Nozick, Chomsky denied that he ever authorized the essay in Faurisson's book, and claimed that he had never had any interest in anti-semitic Holocaust revisionism. Nozick then claimed to recall an earlier conversation with Chomsky on this topic well before Chomsky gave accolades to Faurisson's book; in response Chomsky insulted and berated him, and then physically shoved him in front of witnesses.

After moderately extensive Google-searching, I could find no discussion of this debate. If anybody knows more about this particular debate and where this summary of it came from, could you please cite the source?

It is from a very recent article by Harvard Professor Alan Dershowitz, which has been reprinted in full on a number of Usenet newsgroups. [[RK]]
Aah, Dershowitz's famous Tech article: http://www-tech.mit.edu/V122/N25/col25dersh.25c.html I see this was also the source of the summary of Faurisson's work. Next time, please cite your source; it helps your fellow authors and readers. Dershowitz and Chomsky have a long history. I think it would be the appropriate topic of another section. More on Dershowitz!

It starts with this gem:

In early November controversy irrupted on the internet over Harvard Law Professor Alan Dershowitz’s proposal to legalize torture in the United States to extract information from terrorism suspects.

Like the Onion said: Holy Fucking Shit!

Man, RK has some strange allies. -- Ark

I don't understand what Dershowitz's views on torture have to do with Chomsky and anti-semitism, nor how they could help us improve an article on the subject of Chomsky and anti-semitism. These thoughts would probably better fit on a page like talk:Alan Dershowitz or perhaps talk:torture

Insight into the character and mindset of Chomsky's accusers? The reason why Dershowitz has an enmity towards Chomsky? And yeah, they'd probably better fit in an entry about Dershowitz or torture now that you bring it up.

I am having trouble following all the threads. Perhaps if people would append at the bottom and use the "----" thing to make a line and sign their comments clearly, it would help me.

Also, we are getting off the subject of how to improve this article and getting into the deep issues of:

  1. what is anti-semitism?
  2. what sorts of remarks or actions are anti-semitic?
  3. what have Jews done (or had done to them) in history?

These questions are important, so maybe some of you will join me in refactoring this debate. Any ideas how to do that? Here's one idea:

I am Jewish. I am a member of the Unification Church (UC). Someone old me that 13% of UC members in the US are Jewish, but that only 1% of the general population is Jewish.

So if someone calls the UC a "Jew church" or a "Jewish-dominated" church, is that an anti-semitic remark? Before you answer, consider the same statistics applying to Hollywood film makers.

Or, what if a sports columnist said that blacks made better basketball players: is this a "racist" comment? Is it also racist if a socioligist says that a greater proportion of pro basketball players are black than the general population?

Whatever your own answer is, think about how to make a good article. Maybe, Mr. X calls Mr. Y an anti-semite because.... Any Mr. Z defends Mr. Y because...

C'mon, guys, take a step back from proving that you are right and focus on describing what prominent or significant spokesmen are saying. Summarize and attribute. Thank you. Ed Poor

I deleted the tedious threads because I don't think they contribute to the article nor enlighten anyone about issues surrounding the article. I'm the heaviest contributor in those threads so that pretty much shows they're worthless. RK restored them because he thinks the thread reflects badly on me and he has it in for me. I deleted the thread again and I'm sure RK will restore it once more. -- Ark
