Camembert (French pronunciation: [kamɑ̃bɛʁ] ) is a commune in the Orne department in north-western France.[2]

It is the place where camembert cheese originated.[3]

Geography[edit]

The commune has one river running through it the Viette in addition to four streams, the Fontaine de la Motte, Besion, the Moulin Neuf, plus the Costillets.

History[edit]

The village is most noted for the early development of camembert cheese by Marie Harel in 1791.[3]

Notable buildings and places[edit]

  • Maison Du Camembert a museum telling how the story of the history of the cheese and how it is produced.[5] The museum is in the shape of a Camembert cheese.[6]
  • Beamoncel the manor house, which was the home of Marie Harel.[7]
  • President Farm another museum about camembert that is linked to the dairy brand, Président.[7]
