Whisky olympics[edit]

I restored the section which was removed as "offensive", and added a reference. Offensive or not, it is a fact that the press popularly refers to the whisky olympics. It is a fact that bars are opened late, indeed at the Oban Mod there was a controversy because the extension was only a few hours; unfortunately the Oban Times does not have online archives.

If some find this offensive, it would be appropriate to say that too, but I can't find a reference. Facts should not be suppressed because some find them offensive; that would be a very dangerous trend, because there is someone ready to line up to be offended by about anything.

The reference to a real whisky event may seem irrelevant, but I think it may be important to establish that sometimes people mean something else. Better would be an article on the actual whisky olympics, but I haven't been able to complete that research. Notinasnaid 10:05, 14 Feb 2005 (UTC)

Merge[edit]

A little while ago, Royal National Mod was split off from this article. This left this article as little more than a stub and a list of mods. It lacked context on what a mod was, but by putting that back I have just duplicated most of the other article. In my view, there really wasn't enough material left in this article to justify splitting off Royal National Mod, which was previously a redirect. Comments? I disagree. A lot of people don't know about local mods, and splitting the articles makes that distinction clearer. Combining the two would make it more difficult to maintain clarity of the differences in competitions, for one thing, and the idea of the Mod Fringe is specific to the National -- local mods generally just have an official winners' ceilidh. In fact, the article for the National is far from complete. If you roll them back together, it wouldn't be possible to complete it -- issues like duration (no mention of the length of the event, presumably because it wasn't in the pre-split version -- The Mod is a week long but mods aren't, if you see what I mean.) Origin of name[edit]

Since 'mòd' has no direct equivalent in other Celtic languages, and given the long-standing Viking presence in Gaelic-speaking areas of Scotland, I'm tempted to see the word as related to modern Norwegian 'møte' (= meeting, gathering) and similar words in other Scandinavian languages (including Old Norse), rather than the suggested Old English 'gemot' - since in those days there was surely very little connection between the Old English and Gaelic language areas.
