Height ranking in Africa[edit]

I do not think Ras Dejen should be regarded as the fourth or fifth highest in Africa. Apart from the highest points of Kilimanjaro, Kenya, Stanley and Meru, Mawenzi (Kilimanjaro) and several other peaks in the Ruwenzori (Stanley) range have at least 500m of topographic prominence and are therefore arguably mountains in their own right. First ascent[edit]

The claim that Ras Dejen was first ascended in 1841 assumes that it had not been previously climbed by locals. I cannot provide a verifiable citation, but such an assumption seems rather unlikely. Height[edit]

I am changing the height to that given in 2005 by the Ethiopian mapping authority, which is supported to within 1m by a Franco-Italian survey, and is not incomptible with SRTM data. Viewfinder (talk) 11:08, 22 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Dubious translation: "the general who fights in front of the Emperor"[edit]

"Ras" means "head" and transitively is an aristrocratic title, which may be bended, but likely not to "general" or "emperor". It also is used as a general part of the name of mountain tops. "Dejen" can mean "support" or "foundation". How does "Ras Dejen" mean "the general who fights in front of the Emperor"? This likely is better translated as "solid mountain" or "mighty mountain". Unfortunately I cannot read the citation. Who knows, maybe this comes from some flowery hymn to the countryside. Tomdo08 (talk) 22:22, 12 January 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Ras Dejen (Dashen) fo the Semen mountains was named after Ras Dejena. Ras Dashen is the corrupted name. He was Tigray’s high ranking official during the reign of Emperor Yohannes. Ras Hagos was a successor of Ras Dejena, then followed by Ras Gugsa Aray, and finally Ras Siyum Mengesha. West of this mountain across some vallyes around Adi Remets is another mountain with the same name, Dejana, without Ras. It refers the same person who was responsible in administering the whole area.
