Andrew Watson

1537 – Croatian–Ottoman wars: After the execution of feudal lord Petar Kružić, Croatian forces at Klis surrendered to the Ottoman forces in exchange for their safe passage to northern locations.
1881 – Andrew Watson (pictured) captained the Scotland national football team against England, becoming the world's first black international footballer.
1947 – Cold War: U.S. president Harry S. Truman proclaimed the Truman Doctrine to help stem the spread of communism.
1952 – British diplomat Lord Ismay was appointed the first secretary general of NATO.
1971 – The Turkish Armed Forces executed a "coup by memorandum", forcing the resignation of Prime Minister Süleyman Demirel.
2006 – U.S. Army soldiers gang-raped a 14-year-old Iraqi girl and murdered her along with her family members.

Censorship[edit]

I'm adding "World Day Against Cyber Censorship" to the Holidays & Observances section based on this article and this letter written by Reporters Without Borders and Amnesty International. There probably other mistakes too (my source for these events isn't the greatest - if you know of a more reliable one than On-This-Day.com please mention it). This is just my first step in a day update: Tomorrow I'm going to check each entry for accuracy and then update the corresponding year and subject pages. Anne Frank[edit]

Please note that I have deleted the mention of Anne Frank name from the Deaths. There is no evidence fore the 12 of March being her last day on Earth. Havelock 18:52, 12 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Zhang Dapeng[edit]

There is nothing in the linked article that says that he is celebrated on March 12. It is his day of death, but he might be celebrated only in the collective Chinese Martyrs, which is not on March 12. March 12[edit]

Does anyone actually say dates like "March 12"? The traditional rendition I am familiar with Americans saying & writing would be March the 12th, although in most of the rest of the world, people follow the date/month/year format, so in Britain for example, we would say & write the 12th of March. March 12 doesn't seem like grammatically correct English in any dialect that I'm aware of. Aran na Beatha (talk) 09:50, 23 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]
