Name[edit]

Hanwell was named after a well called Hannah's well.

Hamwell[edit]

Haven't been able to confirm yet if this is the same 'Hamwell' that Derwent Coleridge was rector of.--Aspro 18:03, 18 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I presume it must be - according to the records at St Mary's Derwent Coleridge was installed as Rector on March 7 1864. Heycos 21:50, 23 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Factual inexactitudes of a geographical nature[edit]

Since this is encyclopedic I think it needs to be made clear that (1) The Three Bridges; (2) Hanwell Asylum (aka St Bernard's); (3) Ealing Hospital and (4) Hanwell Flight of Locks as well as (5) the Wharncliffe Viaduct - save for a few dozen bricks at one end- are all in the suburb of Southall. Any suggestions? We could point out that the western boundary of Hanwell Town is the river Brent and association it is due to proximity rather than domiciliary.--Aspro 11:59, 2 September 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I agree that accuracy is paramount and that a statement to that effect would probably be fine. I suspect that there are issues of "association by proximity" all over the place and that an assiciation of that sort is perfectly justified. Given the short distance from Hanwell town centre to the asylum (not to mention it commonly being called the Hanwell Asylum) it would IMO be negligent not to include it in an entry for Hanwell. - Grange85 09:07, 4 September 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Three Field system[edit]

Remarkably, Google Maps/satellite images of Hanwell, clearly show the ancient Three Field [1] system laid out across the golf course and going beyond Gurnell swimming baths to the north east. What might be clear and fascinating to fellow anoraks though -might not be so clear and interesting to any one else. Any suggestions. To see fields for yourself: [2]

Conservation corridor[edit]

I see that Ealing Council has issued an interesting little illustrated publication regarding the conservation corridor along the canal. [3]

Just a quick scan through and I have already spotted the evidence: that they have been looking through WP for 'material' but without giving us a mention!!! (On their pages 8 & 9 for this article and Hanwell Asylum)

St Mary's[edit]

A past rector of St Mary's was the Rev' Frederic Secombe, (brother of Harry Secombe). I don't think he is rightly famous (he did get onto TV news once but 'that' is another matter!) but other might disagree. Not satisfied with the 'great book' he writes a few of his own apparently.[4]--Aspro 23:40, 9 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]

There appear to be a few free images of Hanwell available but I am loath to link to them as the article lacks sufficient text. Without text to give them context they would just clutter up the article and make it look like a tourist brochure. --Aspro 13:57, 25 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Brentside High School[edit]

Around the Brentside area, it seems to be common knowledge that in 1933 shortly after the closer of Cuckoo Farm, the old farm buildings that stood where the school stands today, were turned into a mock village, then set ablaze for the filming of Lorna Doone. This make sense, as Basil Dean then ran Ealing Studios which is close by. [5] However, in the absence of any good written reference, I will leave it out of the 'In popular culture' section. Burial grounds of Hanwell[edit]

Does anyone have suggestions of what should best be done with the Hanwell Cemetery. The are only three burial grounds left in Hanwell: “St Mary's graveyard”, “City of Westminster Cemetery, Hanwell” (formaly St.George's of Hanover Square Cemetery, Hanwell) and “Royal Borough of Kensington and Chelsea Cemetery, Hanwell”. All the burial grounds have famous people interred there (like most other London cemeteries) so from that point of view there is nothing really notable that makes any one of them really stand out as exceptional London graveyards. Websites like Find a Grave are better sources for the public for this information as they are more comprehensive and accurate. Merging to this article may take longer than redoing from scratch as the article seams to be including information from different cemeteries but the title is in the singular and so needs thorough checking. The original creator of doesn't seem interested in sorting any of this confusion out, so I think it would be better to just delete it, as it currently serves only to mislead.--Aspro (talk) 12:29, 6 November 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Think the way to sort this out without resorting to a separate disambiguation page is thus:

To preserve the edit history it requires the current Hanwell Cemetery page to be renamed by an 'admin' to Westminster City Council Cemetery, Hanwell as most of the text appears to be about this cemetery (whilst the photos are of the other cemetery). This is the more common name and is how it is described at the cemetery itself. A new redirect called “Hanwell cemetery” can then be created to link to Hanwell#Cemeteries section. The Royal Borough of Kensington and Chelsea Cemetery, Hanwell article for the other cemetery which is close by, is almost ready for uploading. Has anyone got any other suggestions or comments please? --Aspro (talk) 18:51, 10 November 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Bus routes[edit]

I'm thinking that the section on Bus routes needs expansion, especially as there are several routes missing which go through the main shopping area on the Uxbridge Road (A4020), including E8 and 427. I'll put a draft here for comment as time permits. I'm thinking of having three groups of routes: south of the Uxbridge Road, along the Uxbridge Road, and north of the Uxbridge Road.
