Wolters: deleted article[edit]

Hi Doc Glasgow - I noticed that an article I started on Al Wolters has been deleted. Is it possible to contest the decison? Or is this too late? I've been away from Wiki for awhile and have only just noticed this. Cheers, SteveBish 10:38, 16 October 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Hm, actually, I can't see any reason why your article deserved to be deleted - I'd have voted to retain it. But, it was deleted after a deletion discussion at WP:AFD (you will find the discussion at Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Albert M. Wolters). It could only be un-deleted if the case was argued successfully at WP:VFU 'votes for undeletion', but I think you might have some problems. The article has been validly and unanimously deleted under the process - so you would need to be able to show some evidence of 'notability' missed by those who voted delete. I think your chances are slim, but you can try. The other option would be to place some of the information in a different article - ironicaly articles on books are less liable to being deleted than those on authors. Try creating a valid article on one of his books - and then give some basic information about the author. (If it is of any help, I can retrieve your original article and post it on your userpage - but you'd have to promise not to recreate the article without a VFU success. I'll be away for a week from tonight, so if you want this done after that, approach another admin and point them to this discussion here.) Hope that helps. Hi, SteveBish. Doc glasgow's asked that I might lend you a hand through the process of VfU since he's going to be away for the duration of it. I already saw your request at VfU and said keep deleted based on a unanimous AfD debate. A good way of persuading VfU to restore an article is to write a new version of it which addresses the concerns of the original AfD debate (see Doc's link above). You could do that somewhere like User:SteveBish/Sandbox and post a link to it in the VfU. If you strip it down to the grit of the article and make a clear case, without using 'peacock terms', for his importance/notability, then VfU could well be persuaded to give the article another chance. Note that it should probably be written outside of article space because any rewrite in the article is likely to get speedily redeleted as a recreation of deleted content. -Splashtalk 16:45, 16 October 2005 (UTC)[reply]
Per your request, I have put the final version of the article before deletion in User:SteveBish/Sandbox. Note that it is not ok to simply put this back into the artcile unless VfU mandates that (in which case it need to be done by an admin anyway, to recover the history). I'd suggest you rewrite the article in place or something, or in another temporary subpage of your userspace and then note that fact at the VfU. -Splashtalk 18:49, 16 October 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Wolters again[edit]

Steve, Tony Sidaway has unilaterally undeleted this article, short-circuiting the debate at VfU. Whilst I'm glad the article is back, I can't say I'm chuffed at the way it happened. Tomy's actions are not going to please a lot of people, and may result in tje article being deleted again or proposed for deletion. Please be aware that if this heats up (and it may not) it really isn't about you, Prof Wolters, or even the article. It will be about Wikipedia's process and ongoing arguments over it. You just may get caught in the cross-fire. The article is good, and will probably survive in the end on its merits. If it gets a 'retrial' at WP:AFD, there should be a string of keep votes. Please be aware that changing someone else's text from a first-person narrative into third-person, as you did in creating the Wolters article, is a form of copyright infringement. We take such violations very seriously and will ban editors who persistently fail to respect the rights of others. My name is Jim Sutton and I'm undertaking research in the School of Library, Archive, and Information Studies, UCL.

I was given your username by Refphilosopher and P who I work with at King's College. Sorry I haven't given their real/full names but thought they may want to keep them private. Anyway P said you may be able to help with my research into wikis.

My research involves studying wiki usage, the reasons why individuals use wikis and the benefits/disadvantages of using wikis to manage knowledge.

I was wondering if you would agree to my analysing your contributions to Wikipedia. This will basically involve calculating how many times you've contributed to Wikipedia within the time period of a week.

I was also wondering what your reasons are for using/contributing to Wikipedia. I'd be extremely grateful for any feedback you can provide.
