Update Requested[edit]

This needs updating. Brandi is loooong retired from playing soccer, and has begun working as a sideline reporter for the American Broadcasting Company's MLS coverage.

Photo Requested[edit]

I think too someone should put up a pic of her in the sports bra. That was a big moment.

POV and other concerns[edit]

I believe the sentence "This iconic image of women's athletic triumph..." contains both POV and original research. It's not for Wikipedia to decide an image is Iconic. And "...women's athletic triumph..." is far from a neutral description of the image.

The same section also goes in original research when it says "Chastain became a famous name...". This is simply a very hard to source statement, and a such, should be completely avoided.

Also, wordings like "...witnessed by 90,000 fans at the Rose Bowl..." and "media darling" doesn't sound encyclopedic at all (not everybody in a stadium is a "fan". How do we define "media darling"?).

Also, the image caption is a very strong claim that really needs to be sourced: "The Sports bra incident was famous partly because of this Sports Illustrated cover...", but I don't see how one would go to source this. --Abu badali (talk) 15:10, 28 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I feel that the sentence included at the end of Chastain's personal life section regarding Chastain breaking up the first marriage of her husband was poorly worded. There were likely other factors that ulimately led to the end of the marriage. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Sbrooks1014 (talkcontribs) 06:23, 10 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]

RE: POV & Other concerns =[edit]

Perhaps the term 90,000 people would we more appropriate. The fact that there were so many there would obviously have added to the sense of occasion.

You do raise some valid points with the definition of "Media Darling", although there can be little doubt that this is, in the eyes of the general public, the incident she is best remembered for. Something more along these lines may be more suitable. Thewiikione 11:09, 24 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]

sports bra incident[edit]

this "incident" ignited controversy, which is simply not mentioned in this article, and does bear mentioning. 99.60.179.53 (talk) 22:35, 24 February 2011 (UTC)neil[reply]

This should be mentioned in the Sports bra article as well: isn't it true that this incident led top women wearing just a sports bra without anything covering it?— Vchimpanzee • talk • contributions • 16:13, 7 October 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Heading of "Sports bra episode"[edit]

I made an edit to this effect last year and got reverted, and am back to argue my case more formally. I strongly believe that the heading of the section discussing the penalty kick and her celebration should either be "1999 World Cup" or "World Cup winning penalty kick" rather than "Sports bra episode." I believe that the current title belittles the accomplishment and takes an overly narrow view of the importance of the incident. When reverting me, GauchoDude said that the "[p]icture [of her in the sports bra was] featured in multiple national magazines, not [the picture of] her kicking pen." Of course, there are probably many pictures in existence of Brandi Chastain wearing a sports bra (or similar). The reason that particular picture gained attention was not simply because she wasn't wearing a shirt. It was because of when it happened - specifically, right after making a penalty kick that won the Women's World Cup for her country. The history of sports journalism is filled with examples of cover photos taken from post-victory or post-clutch play celebrations. I can't prove a negative, but I strongly suspect that even if Chastain's celebration had simply involved her throwing her arms up and jumping in the air, the photo would have been on the front page of national newspapers. The fact that she removed her shirt first might have heightened interest in the photo, but it was not the primary cause of that interest. Niremetal (talk) 22:25, 24 July 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Five years later, I'm back to argue my case yet again. Can we please have some real discussion of this? Niremetal (talk) 22:15, 14 January 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Fresh Off the Boat[edit]

I probably shouldn't do this without sources for every detail but in the Fresh Off the Boat season 6 premiere "Help Unwanted?" Chastain appears twice. First the family is watching her win the World Cup and take off her jersey. Later in the episode, she plays Marvin's stepmother Candy. I can only conclude a woman that young looking did not give birth to Marvin. And it seems likely Marvin and his father did the same thing, marrying a beautiful woman who is much younger. — Vchimpanzee • talk • contributions • 15:55, 7 October 2019 (UTC)[reply]
