The Battle of Château-Thierry usually refers to the German advance that was stopped by the Allies at the end of may. The battle that the allies started with their counter attack on July 18 is called the second battle fo the Marne.

The Germans launched their offensive on July 15 with 43 divisions on a 50 mile front. I think it’s a bit paranoid to say that the offence was launched against the US troops when there was the same number of British troops and 1 million French troops directly involved.

The American army was not yet together, US Divisions were still attached to British and French Armies.

The US 1st and 2nd Divisions were 2 of another 18 French divisions of the French Tenth Army that advanced toward Soissons on July 18. On July 19 the US 2nd Division was relieved after 5,000 casualties. On the 21st the US 1st Division was relieved, after 7200 casualties, by the 15th British Division. Further South on the same day the French of the Sixth Army recaptured Chateau-Thierry. On August 2nd the French 11 Division Chasseurs took Soissons in an advance of up to 6 miles. 3rd of June or 18th of July ?[edit]

An anonymous contributor had changed the two date reference in the text from 1918-07-18 to 1918-06-03. I've reverted both, but i'm a little dubious.

The counter offensive (second paragraph) was in fact launched on the 18th of July. But, as said previously here, there were two battles : on 1918-06-03, the AEF and the french marine infantry stopped the german army, but Château-Thierry was lost for the allies. If you look at the city today, only Hill 204 and the south bank of Marne river were not taken. This part is not often remembered, as it's not a victory. On the other hand, the offensive of 1918-07-18 was a victory, and is still cited...

So my question is : shouldn't we change the introduction sentence to something like :

  • The Battle of Château-Thierry was fought from June 3 to July 18, 1918 and was one of the first actions the American Expeditionary Force (AEF) under General John J. "Black Jack" Pershing. It was a battle in World War I at first part of the stopping of the german advance in spring 1918, then part of the Second Battle of the Marne, initially prompted by a German offensive launched on July 15 against the newest troops on the front, the AEF (American Expeditionary Force).

This has just come again, with another IP editor changing the dates of the intro to June. The sole source which is cited for this article refers on to the battle of July 18. May I suggest we look for more sources and the possibly expand the article if we want to cover all the events of June - July 1918 for this area? On the other hand, there is an article on the Second Battle of the Marne, the larger conflict of which this article's subject was a part. Geoff Who, me? 21:59, 29 September 2013 (UTC)[reply]
