Size of the island[edit]

The article stated that the island covers 702 acres (2.8 sq. km). That was originally true, but land reclamations have increased the size to 982 acres (3.9 sq. km). I made the correction to the article.

Isle Royale[edit]

The isle royale linked to and mentioned is clear on the other side of michigan! Since I have been to both islands, I think I can authouratively remove this misleading information. --Knife Knut 02:35, 17 July 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Huh? So what if it is on the other side of Michigan? Are you saying that there is not any island named "Belle Isle" in in the Isle Royale National Park? I could perhaps see moving the information into separate articles, but personally I rather dislike the unecessary proliferation of stubby little articles that are unlikely to be expanded very much. olderwiser 02:59, July 17, 2005 (UTC)

Detroit Grand Prix Merger Talk[edit]

I think parts of this page that involve the Detriot GP Belle Isle Circuit should be moved in with Detroit Grand Prix while mentioning it at the top of the page if someone use Belle Isle in a search. Sawblade05 20:47, 26 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]

See more about the merger Discussion at Talk:United States Grand Prix East about the proposed merger. Sawblade05 21:18, 26 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Photos[edit]

Photos needed for Belle Isle include: James Scott Fountain, the Belle Isle Bridge, the marble lighthouse, and the gardens around the conservatory. Thomas Paine1776 (talk) 00:47, 1 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Oldest Conservatory[edit]

I am a docent in the Lincoln Park Conservatory in Chicago which was built in 1890 and 1895.[1] This one was built in 1904. Thus, I removed part of the sentence where it says this is the oldest conservatory in the nation. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Mikecngan (talkcontribs) 02:21, 5 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Merge ASW Primate Conservatory[edit]

ASW Primate Conservatory should be deleted and what little information there is on that page should be merged with Belle Isle Park. Yours, GeorgeLouis (talk) 16:07, 2 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Wrong Co-ordinates[edit]

The co-ordinates given seem to be wrong as the marker in Google Earth actually shows up on Sugar Island.

Co-ordinates are OK today. PKT(alk) 15:13, 4 May 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Small Amusement Park[edit]

Wasn't there a small amusement park on Belle Isle in the 1960s that includes a miniature train? Jtyroler (talk) 05:51, 26 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]

State's Lease[edit]

Today 11/12/2013 a lease of Belle Isle to the state of Michigan was approved. It will take effect 90 days from now, the lease is for 30 years. Belle Isle will become a State Park, Michigan DNR will manage the park and a state "recreation passport" will be required to enter the park.--97.71.20.73 (talk) 23:10, 12 November 2013 (UTC) Per the Michigan Department of Natural Resources the official name of this state park remains Belle Isle Park. Regarding the spelling of the word "Isle"[edit]

The article currently says that the word "Isle" might have been misspelled:

On July 4, 1845, a historic picnic party was held on the island to change the name to “Belle Isle” in honor of Miss Isabelle Cass, the daughter of then Governor (General) Lewis Cass. Belle Isle literally means "beautiful island" in French. It is misspelled, however, and should be Belle Île.

While this statement might be accurate I wonder if this spelling does not - on the contrary - correspond to the correct (or at least the most widespread) spelling of the French word for "island" at that time. Indeed, in old French, the word "île" was written "isle".([1]) In addition, the island of Belle-Île located in Brittany can alternately be written Belle Isle ([2])
