Changing image names

Hi Starwiz! In answer to your question, images cannot be moved/renamed. You will need to save the image to your computer, change the name, then re-upload the file with the new file name. After that you can tag the old one with the "images for speedy deletion" template -- copy {{isd|New image name}} into the image's description page, and an admin will delete it when they get the chance. Agreed, but the software does impose some limitations on us. Anyway, I reported it as a bug (hoping for a more helpful error message at least), and got an amazingly quick response from our very busy developers -- they've removed the "move" tab from pages in the "Image:" namespace altogether! Still not going to be helpful for people scratching their heads and wondering "how do I rename this?", but it's something. Yes, you're doing the talk pages correctly, and yes, it's a little confusing.  :) Better talk facilities are one of the things on many people's "wish lists" but there's a lot of debate about the how.

I've added a bit to the Editing FAQ about renaming an image; you can peruse the rest of the sprawling FAQ here. (Type the shortcut "WP:FAQ" into the search box to get there quickly; there are lots of shortcuts to other popular pages too -- see Wikipedia:WP for a (yeesh, also sprawling) list.  :)

I've had a look over your contributions, and you're doing great work! Please keep it up, we need more good young minds around here... I did AP English and AP Calculus myself way back in history, so I have some idea how much work it takes to succeed in all of those classes, and as a junior, too! I see. I was under the mistaken impression that the original wording ended after "Now, who drinks water? Who owns the zebra?". I guess I should have checked that link. Moment of inertia

Hey, yea I think its probably a good idea to keep the energy part there, although it does take up quite a bit of space. A derivation for the torque equation would be useful too, but that might be even longer. It might help to actually create a separate page for those derivations (somewhere like moment of inertia/derivations). But it looks pretty good. Fresheneesz 20:20, 31 March 2006 (UTC)

FSU Young Scholars Program

Actually, that edit comment was meant to question whether a partial list of where the YSP graduates are going to college is encyclopedic. YSP isn't a scholarship (as you wrote on the Village pump) so much as it is a summer program. I'd be happy to elaborate on the Village pump, but I wasn't sure you wanted me to answer with regards to summer programs rather than scholarships. The closest notability guidelines I can find are those for schools; they're pretty inclusive, I think. I think the fact that the program is mentioned among only a handful of other summer programs on an MIT blog (the link is in the article) suggests that the program is as notable as, say, CTY, even though it's much smaller. Unfortunate revert

I reverted a recent edit to Calvin and Hobbes for what may have been an accidental partial page blanking. A good chunk of the end of the article, including valid sections and other language links were lost in a recent edit you made. Please go back and try again to make your intended changes. How strange! This happened to me recently on another page, too. I don't think I could have accidentally deleted all that text; I only edited the first line. Do you have any idea how this might be happening? Maybe I'm closing my tabs too quickly in Firefox? Starwiz 01:26, 17 June 2006 (UTC)

Firefox may have an issue with very large editboxes when you move tabs around. User:Quadratic found this to be the case when I noticed him doing it. He came back one day and reported an idea he had on what firefox was doing. link to a section on my talk page If I can help you or quadratic figure this out, the firefox developers can be informed of this and it can be fixed in the next minor release. Well, it's definitely not happening beacuse I closed the tab, because I watched the edit page reload the article. I may still have moved some tabs, though. I'll check it out in my sandbox. It cut it off at the exact same spot in the article! I don't get it. Starwiz 01:44, 17 June 2006 (UTC)

Thanks for the note. Looking back at my edit, I realize I was going way too fast. I skipped the word "order" and saw "for recommended reading, see the Foundation series". Part of what messed me up may have been the hyphenated "reading-order", which I've now changed. Having taken a closer look, it seems that the link is actually to the reading order Asimov himself recommended, so I've altered the sentence to reflect that. Thanks for the note. Template:Planet_Infobox/Mercury

It's been my experience that the SVGs sometimes take some time before they're displayed. There may be an easy fix for this, but I don't know what it is. (It probably has to do with image caching; I never encounter the problem when I change low-visibility pages.) Please let me know if you come up with anything approaching a solution! Fair use rationale for Image:FoxTrot_banner.png

Thanks for uploading or contributing to Image:FoxTrot_banner.png. I notice the image page specifies that the image is being used under fair use but there is no explanation or rationale as to why its use in Wikipedia articles constitutes fair use. In addition to the boilerplate fair use template, you must also write out on the image description page a specific explanation or rationale for why using this image in each article is consistent with fair use. Suggestions on how to do so can be found here.

Please go to the image description page and edit it to include a fair use rationale. Using one of the templates at Wikipedia:Fair use rationale guideline is an easy way to ensure that your image is in compliance with Wikipedia policy, but remember that you must complete the template. Do not simply insert a blank template on an image page.

If you have uploaded other fair use media, consider checking that you have specified the fair use rationale on those pages too. You can find a list of 'image' pages you have edited by clicking on the "my contributions" link (it is located at the very top of any Wikipedia page when you are logged in), and then selecting "Image" from the dropdown box.
