I don't even know this guy but this article seems awfully biased. Or is it just me? — Preceding unsigned comment added by 84.155.151.224 (talk) 11:45, 30 September 2005 (UTC)[reply]

In Finland, Matti Nykänen is widely considered a has-been, and is thought to have messed up his life. He is doing stupid things so fast that people have appealed to newspapers to stop writing articles about him. He was recently released from prison after being sentenced for beating his wife, and after 104 hours (less than five days), he beat her again. He's hopeless. JIP | Talk 11:55, 30 September 2005 (UTC)[reply]

If there is any bias in this article, it is in favour of Matti. He's a drunken, highly violent wife-beating bastard bordering on total psychopathy. And this is all just factual analysis - my own opinion I dare not write here. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 193.166.85.144 (talk) 19:16, 24 November 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Keirf: Inarguably is an english word - I typed my edit comment too quickly - but the usual phrase used is "arguably". — Preceding unsigned comment added by Keirf (talkcontribs) 22:07, 12 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]

One of the greatest Finns[edit]

In 2004 the Finnish Public Broadcasting Service ran a selection of "the greatest Finn in history" and asked people to submit votes on anyone of their choice; the ten top names went to the final round. Nykänen landed at no.11. There were suggestions that he had actually made the top roster but had been pushed down because of the potential embarrassment of having this bad boy placed on the top list or even winning (the final awardee was the national hero Gustaf Mannerheim). ;) Strausszek (talk) 08:26, 4 December 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Date of death[edit]

3 or 4 February? Just for correctness sake. It has been changed few times. – KWiki (talk) 23:02, 7 March 2019 (UTC)[reply]

In the section "Death" it is stated that he died shortly before midnight on 3 February, but in the infobox it stands 4 February. So, what is official? – KWiki (talk) 20:15, 9 March 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Greatest of all time[edit]

Matti Nykänen is one of the greatest ski jumpers of all time, but he cannot be called the greatest.

All of the sources that have cited on this article that identify Nykänen as the greatest were written before 2013, before Schlierenzauer broke his victory record.

There are many sources that Schlierenzauer consider the greatest. To cite Nykänen as the greatest is not correct for an objective Wikipedia article.

We can't say about any ski jumper, whether Nykänen, Schlierenzauer, Malysz, Ahonen or Stoch, that they were the greatest. However, we can be said that they are one of the greatest.

Sources that describe Schlierenzauer as the greatest of all time (German): https://m.tagesspiegel.de/sport/skispringen-gregor-schlierenzauer-der-beste-aller-zeiten/7597404.html?utm_referrer=https%3A%2F%2Fde.m.wikipedia.org%2F

I agree. Therefore would "one of the greatest" be an acceptable re-wording? I mean, there are plenty of jumpers who are "one of the sport's most successful contemporary athletes" (Kobayashi, Kraft, Morgenstern, etc.), but Nykänen was on a whole different level in his time. Mac Dreamstate (talk) 00:38, 1 January 2021 (UTC)[reply]

I think Schlierenzauer, Nykänen, Malysz, Stoch, Ahonen and Weißflog are "one of the most successful ski jumpers of all time".

The other successful ski jumpers, Kraft, Morgenstern, Ammann, Prevc, Schmitt etc. are "one of the most successful contemporary ski jumpers" or they are "one of the most successul ski jumpers of their country".

I would say to Nykänen: one of the most successful ski jumpers of all time, who dominated the 1980s. Marius70 (talk) 14:35, 5 January 2021 (UTC)[reply]
