Kinda both. I only speak English and dodgy Spanish but I'm interested in languages and writing systems and I did a lot of work finding the native ways to write many foreign terms that pop up in English over on Everything2 so I'm bringing them all over here since this site is so cool. I have to confess to liking them, particularly the hebrew and arabic, mostly for their aesthetic appeal. Coincidentally, I'm curious why you elected to contribute to Wikipedia after your Everything2 experience. I've also got Chinese, Japanese, and a bunch of miscellaneous stuff waiting. Then I'm hoping to do some Sanskrit stuff I just came across. I'd been using Everything since 1999 when it was still E1 and I like the community feel over there but every so often there's a schism and things get deleted or policies change or whatever. When E2 went offline for a month or so to move the server across the country I was doing a google search for "Linguaphile" which is a project of mine and discovered that somebody had made an article about it on Wikipedia. So even though I'd read a bunch of stuff on Wikipedia before I'd never delved into it. This time I wanted to edit the article and make a Spanish and a German version. I really like the way everybody perfects a single article here compared to E2's article-per-person. Though I like their way too - I'm glad there is a place that works each way. We have server problems sometimes too (but a spanky new $6000 server seems to be improving things greatly). We also have a few (well, one, that I can think of) people who want to be the sole-owner of an article. I restrain myself from telling that person "well, get thee to E2 or h2g2 then", as their contributions are generally excellent. Harry Potter translations

Use HTML entities

Nive work on List of Harry Potter chapter titles in other languages, but might I suggest you try using an HTML entity rather than each explicit character, which might help prevent this problem happening again? I would try myself but my Latvian is non-existant and I would probably end up making it even worse :-( I think it happens when someone edits the page with a browser which can't hndle the extended character, so any attempt to use those characters will only work until the next time that happens. --Phil | Talk 11:00, Jul 26, 2004 (UTC)

Re-factor pages

I've been thinking about rearranging the articles so each of the books gets its own translation page. So we could have Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone in translation, or maybe you'd prefer Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone (translations)? They badly need refactoring. I think having them split up by book is one good idea. Especially since each book introduces new interesting-to-translate words and phrases. It would even be really nice to put the page number where each term first occurs but there are so many different English editions. I think Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone (translations) or may even Harry Potter in translation (Philosopher's Stone) — but I think I'm better at finding translations that refactoring Wikipedia articles myself. Looks good. It has reminded me of a few things I haven't liked in the articles while I've been working on them.

1. Non-latin scripts are even harder to read in Italics, and many scripts seldom use italics at all. I think it's better to leave the native script non-italicized and italicize the transliterations.
2. We should divide the Chinese by country or publisher rather than by script type. Using "Simplified" and "Traditional" implies that the words ought to be the same but they are not because the translators in Taiwan and in China worked independently.

Okinawan language

Hi Hippietrail.

I saw your questions on Talk:Okinawan language and figured I'd answer them.

As to the writing of Okinawan... that question needs a very long answer.

A very very very long time ago, a script called 時双紙 (toki-kisoushi) was used in the Ryukyus. I'm not sure when it eventually fell out of use, but I think it was around 700 AD. One can still find books and documents written in it. I'm not sure if anybody knows what it means or not. I would assume it's been deciphered, but it's possible I'm wrong.

At around the same time, there was a similar writing system called 砂川双紙 (sunagawa-kisoushi) in use. I'm not sure how the two are different, but they're always referred to as different writing systems.

There is also evidence for other non-Chinese and non-Japanese writing systems, however most of it is in Yonaguni, Okinawa and Yaeyama; neither of them speak Okinawan but rather related languages (the former speaks "Yonaguni", the latter speaks "Yaeyama"). In Yaeyama, a script called "kaidaa-di" was used until perhaps the early 1800s, when it lost ground to Hiragana, Katakana, and (in most cases) illiteracy. There was also a script called "yaahan" used at the same time, however it wasn't really a script because it was only used for writing family seals. There are still small traces of "kaidaa-di" literacy in modern Yaeyama, however it is for the most part dead.

More intriguing, however, is the case of Yonaguni. Until as late as 1910, a related-but-not-quite-identical script called "kaidaa-zi" was known by everybody throught the island. There was also a script used for writing family seals, called "daahan". HOWEVER, in this case there is still alive today a woman who was taught the script by her father. She is the curator of the island's ethnographic museum.

In addition to these two scripts, there is evidence of a third script on Yonaguni, called "sanninnudai". It is known only from one inscription (located at a place called "sanninnudai"), and remains completely undeciphered. It's believed to be much older than kaidaa-zi or daahan.

There's more to this, however: recently, divers discovered a man-made structure on the ocean floor right off of Yonaguni. There are a couple of pyramids, as well as stairs and other structures. Little is known about them, except that they are considered to be impossible because all evidence indicates they were built less than 5000 years ago, but the last time the water level was low enough for those structures to not be underwater was over 10000 years ago. What does this have to do with kaidaa-zi? On a stone which some believe "marks the entrance to the monument", there are inscribed two characters, resembling very very closely two kaidaa-zi, one meaning "male horse" and the other meaning "male goat".

This has led some to believe that kaidaa-zi are actually much more ancient than was previously postulated.

Also, it's generally accepted that at one time, kaidaa-zi were in use throught the Ryukyus, including the island of Okinawa (they're believed to be named after a district of the island named "kaiya")

There is also evidence of another script used for religious writings in Okinawa, but I don't know what it's called.

Anyhow, on to more modern times. As the ancient scripts were gradually phased out, they were replaced with Hiragana (and at times katakana). On the main island, most people were literate in Hiragana in the classical period, and many short inscriptions in classical Okinawan can be found on rocks.

The usage of Hiragana/Katakana for Okinawan is slightly different than for that of Japanese. The sequence "ta-u" is to be read as "to-o", the sequence "ha-u" is to be read as "ho-o" (the same rule can be applied to any "?a-u" sequence). Similarly, "ta-i" is to be read as "te-e", "ha-i" is to be read as "he-e" (and so on and so forth). The same rules apply to "?a-o" as to "?a-u", and the same rules apply to "?a-e" as to "?a-i".

Many a time, what would be read in Japanese as "e" is read as "i", and what would be read in Japanese as "o" is read as "u".

In modern times, usage varies between the system I just described and a system resembling that used for modern Japanese (with some modifications for syllables not existing in Japanese).

Preferred evolutionary direction

History of Spanish orthography

Hi, Hippietrail. I hadn't noticed your comments on the evolution of Spanish spelling and the successive standardization attempts. How fluent is your Spanish? I don't have time to write at length on the subject right now, but this site carries a succint and substantially correct chronology that might be useful. Far more fun to read is the prolonged and well-informed rant at http://www.lapaginadefinitiva.com/politica/peun/6.htm, but it carries less information and is throughly colloquial, which greatly diminishes its usefulness to anyone but a native speaker of Castilian Spanish (I have a hard time of it myself, being Argentinian). This PDF at the Cervantes Center virtual library yields some more information about the Golden Century linguists.

Hi, Hippietrail. I also recommend you the entry for Antonio de Nebrija, who was the first creator of a Spanish grammar. Actually, the first one to make a Romance language grammar. Before that, the Spanish language was unruled and unofficial, and after that succeeded Latin as official language in Spain. Later, the final regulation for Spanish language came from the Real Academia Española, the institution responsible of regulating Spanish language in Spain, together with many other national language academies in every Spanish-speaking country. The Real Academia practically "froze" Spanish language in a somehow 18th-century grammar with minimal changes. Despite of that, it's possible for a native speaker to understand every written text in Spanish from 14th century and later.

I just got finished editing the Lois Hamilton Article. After I saved the page for the final time I looked at the History Page - Good Grief! It seems you did a great job on the Article on February 22, and then someone came along and all but destroyed it. I'm still learning some of the finer points of editing Wiki. Sorry Michael, I actually know nothing about Lois Hamilton but at one point I was interested in writers who committed suicide, found her name on a list, and added her article to the appropriate category. All the information that was vandalised was added by other editors before me. Brumbies and Mustangs

Hi Hippietrail,

Just wanted to let you know why I tossed your see alsos cross-referencing Brumby and Mustang. It's not that I personally disagree with you, as it is true that there are a lot of similarities. (Though also a lot of differences, including ancestral stock) They once did cross-link each other, but then people started adding almost every other type of feral horse out there until the lists were unwieldy and a mess, to boot. By creating the article feral horse, where they are ALL listed, and then putting that in the see also sections, we eliminated an ever-growing laundry list. I didn't want you to think I just reverted you on a whim, there was a real reason for it! And I liked your good edit summary that explained your thinking. Hope this all makes sense (smile). info boxes

Hi Hippietrail!

Not sure if you're still around. If you are, would you mind repeating this? This time with the names of the articles that have unsupported field. I'd like to clean that up. Or maybe tell me how to do it.

Another common issue: field fam(n), when there is no fam(n–1), for n > 2. When that happens, fam(n) and up do not display. (Not a problem for child(n).)

Same concern w fam(n) for Infobox language. I've come across quite a few of these, but since they're not visible, I'm sure there are dozens more.

Well I'm kinda around but I'm travelling around the world for the next uncertain number of months and not doing a lot of wikistuff at present. A lot of my infobox stuff was fully automated run once per day by cron on the toolserver. But when they moved from Linux to Solaris they stopped using cron and I had so many things on my todo list that I never learned the new system.

The code is all open source though so if you can code or can get somebody who can code to tweak it then please go right ahead.
