Distributed in USA anymore?

I remember Tooheys rather fondly from when I first became old enough to drink many years ago, especially for its giant (to me) cans and its memorable slogan, "Up your Tooheys!" I was rather surprised to see it entirely supplanted, at least in this small corner of the world, by Foster's and wonder if it is anywhere in the states anymore or if all distribution agreements have now lapsed, which seems to be a rather commond development in the world of beer. Changes 2007-10-13 to 14

This is my first substantive edit to an established page, so I hope I haven't messed up.

Added some detail to the History section to reflect information on the Lion Nathan and Tooheys New websites. When I came to this article it said the Bond takeover was 1984, but Lion Nathan's site currently says 1985. Does anybody have evidence that it may have been '84 rather than '85?

Similarly the wikipedia article only said J.T. Toohey obtained his license and started brewing; but other sources mention both Toohey brothers. Anyone know if the license was in one or both names?

Previous text:

Tooheys dates from 1869, when John Thomas Toohey (an Irish immigrant from Melbourne) obtained his brewing license and commenced brewing Tooheys Old in a purchased brewery at the present day Darling Harbour area of Sydney.

Tooheys New site:

Tooheys was founded by two brothers: John Thomas Toohey and James Matthew Toohey. The sons of Irish immigrants who went on to run pubs in Melbourne (The Limerick Arms and then The Great Britian), the Tooheys [sic] brothers moved to Sydney in the 1860's with the aim of carrying on the family business.

So were they immigrants, or the sons of immigrants?

Will add Red, Blue and Gold to the list of beers shortly. I have a bottle at home with the old-style Tooheys Red label. Hopefully I might upload a photo later. It reads [punctuation added]:

Tooheys Brewery RED BITTER. 750 mL. 5c at collection depots when sold in SA. Beer brewed and bottled in Australia. Tooheys Pty Limited, 29 Nyrang Street Lidcombe NSW 2141 Australia. 4.2% alc/vol. Approx. 2.5 standard drinks. For consumer information 1800 308 388. [UPN 9 311890 595806]

Label printed in red, green, black and gold on white paper; features stag's head graphic.

Red Bitter etc. are no longer branded "Tooheys", but AFAIK they are still brewed at Tooheys Brewery (need to check this).

Follow-up

I checked the packaging for Red, Gold, Blue and it says they still are brewed by Tooheys Pty Ltd ("or other related companies under license").

The statement about Tooheys-brand hopped-LME (liquid malt extract) being produced by Canterbury Brewery is taken from the product packaging, and can be confirmed at any major supermarket in NSW. The packaging references www.tooheysbrewing.com.au, but this URL redirects to the Brew Lion site (http://brewlion.lionshop.com.au/).

Re-reading the quote about the Toohey brothers, it's ambiguous whether they were Melbourne publicans, or their parents were. (I always assumed the former.)

Portraits of James Toohey (http://naa12.naa.gov.au/scripts/PhotoSearchItemDetail.asp?M=0&B=11874834&SE=1) and John Thomas Toohey (http://naa12.naa.gov.au/scripts/PhotoSearchItemDetail.asp?M=0&B=11874833&SE=1) can be viewed on the National Archives of Australia web site. NAA claims reproduction rights over the digitised versions of these images, so unfortunately they can't be copied to Wikipedia. I found these by searching on Picture Australia, www.pictureaustralia.org.

Advertising

Man, there so need to be some mentions of the ads for this beer. The one with the trebuchet and the rain of beer and the one with the flailing tube guys filled with air with the Tom Jones song. I hate beer but the advertising is brilliant. Gemfyre (talk) 01:42, 2 February 2008 (UTC)

Move to Lidcombe - when?

The article claims "In 1955, the brewery moved west to Lidcombe" and cites Ref 3 - Tooheys Breweries official website.

Yet if you click on Our History it says "In the early 1970s, the workers packed their bags, headed up Parramatta Road and landed at the shiny new Tooheys Brewery in Lidcombe"
