Pathways and canon[edit]

Hi Maree. I'm glad you mentioned the Vulcan article otherwise I wouldn't have been able to reply to you. Please sign your messages with 4 ~ symbols (as described above) so that it's easier to send you replies. Anyway, in answer to your question, there is a misconception that the Star Trek novels Pathways and Mosaic, since they were written by Voyager co-creator Jeri Taylor, are exceptions to the general rule put down by Paramount that no novels or reference works are considered canon. There was some confusion about this because, before Taylor resigned as a producer of Voyager, it was generally accepted that this was the case. In fact, according to Pocket Books, the Taylor novels are not considered canon (this came direct from the current editor of the Star Trek book line at Pocket). So the Paramount ruling is that only information provided on-screen in a live action film or episode is considered canon; anything in the animated series or books is considered non-canon and the writers of episodes and films have no obligation to pay any heed to those materials. That hasn't, of course, stopped script writers from making references to novels and TAS from time to time. In terms of Wikipedia, the general consensus is we focus on canon information, but if there is a piece of non-canon (or even fanon) information of interest, it's welcome as either a trivia item or if it's clearly identified as something that is not canon.
