Glendale to Tempe[edit]

Since this isn't a re-location so to speak. Best we treat it like the New Jersey Devils' move from East Rutherford to Newark. GoodDay (talk) 04:46, 13 February 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Fix grammar in the last part of franchise history. Ex, change "an video" to "a video" Ruski47.1 (talk) 13:45, 12 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Reports of the players being informed of the move to SLC[edit]

Just putting it out there, though nothing has been officially announced yet so it's not getting in per WP:SPORTSTRANS: ESPN, TSN, CBC, CBS Sports, Sportsnet. LilianaUwU (talk / contributions) 04:27, 13 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Will the team be classified as “defunct” or simply a former team?[edit]

Once the 2023-24 season is over, will the introduction of this page be either the following:

”The Arizona Coyotes were a professional ice hockey team that was based in the Phoenix metropolitan area.”

or

”The Arizona Coyotes are a defunct professional ice hockey team based in the Phoenix metropolitan area.”

I propose the use of the word “defunct” until June 2024, when it’ll be announced whether Coyotes owner Alex Meruelo has won or lost the land bid to construct a new arena in Phoenix. Should he lose the bid, I propose then changing the word to refer to the Coyotes current state as “was/were”. CanadianOntarian (talk) 02:37, 18 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Follow how it's done at (for examples) Hartford Whalers, Atlanta Thrashers, Kansas City Scouts etc. GoodDay (talk) 02:40, 18 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Yes but those teams had no plans of returning. I also argue that the Coyotes are in a unique predicament as there is a chance that Arizona will receive another NHL expansion team in 3-5 years. Alex Meruelo is saving the rights for the terms “Coyotes”. The Coyotes are relocating due to an arena situation, so there is stronger speculation that the team will return in 3-5 years as an expansion team. CanadianOntarian (talk) 02:45, 18 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]
According to reports they'll be listed as suspended operations until the new arena situation is resolved. The board vote and announcement should come tomorrow and then we'll proceed. Deadman137 (talk) 02:42, 18 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Should the Coyotes be considered a suspended team, I’d advocate for the term “defunct” as business operations for the Arizona Coyotes are not permanently shutdown. CanadianOntarian (talk) 02:46, 18 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]
The Coyotes won't be returning. The Phoenix area will be getting an expansion team, a totally different franchise. GoodDay (talk) 02:50, 18 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]
It’s already been stated that the naming rights for the Coyotes haven’t been sold, and Alex Meruelo, team owner and active bidder for the land bid to construct the arena in Phoenix, is keeping the name. There’s almost a zero percent chance that if or when the Arizona expansion team comes, that it’ll be a different team name than Coyotes. CanadianOntarian (talk) 03:24, 18 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]
If the Coyotes do not fold they will come back as an expansion team, similar to what happened with the Cleveland Browns. Deadman137 (talk) 03:35, 18 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Yup, also what I’m thinking; 1995-96 Cleveland Browns situation CanadianOntarian (talk) 04:28, 18 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]
That'll be a first for the NHL then, pretending a new franchise is an old franchise. This is usually done by the NFL & CFL. We'll have to wait & see how to handle this situation. GoodDay (talk) 10:18, 18 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]
The NHL just put out their press release confirming the move, and the fact that it is a Browns / Ravens situation (where the Coyotes will temporarily suspend operations, Meruelo will retain the Coyotes name and branding in Arizona, with a chance to "reactivate" the Coyotes in the next 5 years). Fix the typo on the line: The Arizona Coyotes Were a professional

Fix the typo and add the period on paragraph:

the team announced a relocation to Salt Lake City, Utah in the 2023–24 NHL season set for the start of the 2024–25 NHL season the last game at Mullett Arena was a 5 - 2 win over the Edmonton Oilers

Done I fixed these mistakes and removed the extra space before the last paragraph in the lead, thanks. Jamedeus (talk) 18:36, 18 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]
You're welcome! Marveloushistorian (talk) 18:51, 18 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]
I'm sorry, I'm not seeing where this passage occurs on the Arizona Coyotes page, but I think that it should read as follows:
"The team announced a relocation to Salt Lake City, Utah in the 2023–24 NHL season set for the start of the 2024–25 NHL season. The last game at Mullett Arena was a 5 - 2 win over the Edmonton Oilers."
This splits two different ideas into cohesive sentences. TheDarkEnforcer (talk) 23:15, 18 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Its official[edit]

According to Deseret News, the move has been approved. NW1223<Howl at meMy hunts> 20:08, 18 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Are the Coyotes re-locating? We're getting news that the franchise is staying put & merely suspending operations. Next season will be an expansion team, in Salt Lake City. GoodDay (talk) 00:45, 19 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]
The team and some of its staff are relocating to Utah. The team's record stays in Arizona and will reactivate if a team ever comes back to Arizona. Marveloushistorian (talk) 02:31, 19 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]
They have five years to get an arena or the team will fold. Deadman137 (talk) 02:38, 19 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]
I don’t think the category of Disestablishment is appropriate as the club is only being suspended not disestablished yet. Gojetsgo55 (talk) 04:05, 19 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]
